Constructive Essay: How I Changed My Writing

If someone said that their writing hasn’t changed this semester I would call them a liar. Everyone is always changing, growing, and learning; this is true for writing styles as well; by reading other writers work, one is able to take styles from that text and adapt it into something that is unique. Being able to respond and properly use constructive criticism is a skill that was used frequently in English 102 as well as critical thinking and research. These are skills that I personally will take with me for years to come.
Coming from high school English to English 102 was a huge adjustment, but I was more successful in English 102 then I was in any high school class. Being treated more like an adult was a huge part of this as well as realizing that I wasn’t a terrible writer like I assumed throughout adolescence. After I realized I was actually a good writer, churning out those huge essays didn’t seem such as daunting of a task.
Organization is a skill that I improved in 102 but still need to improve as time goes on. I never realized how useful a good outline is until 102. Being able to organize an outline is the perfect way to organize your thoughts and makes writing the actually essay a ton easier. Knowing when to break paragraphs and how many to have is huge in helping an essay have good flow from one idea to the next. According to the writing center at Harvard, one of the biggest keys in any essay is including the following: what, how, why. This is a perfect base structure to help one start organizing an essay. Personally I found that going along with a base structure helps my writing be stronger. The base I use is for a one page essay, one intro paragraph, one body, and one conclusion.
