Coral Reef Ecosystems: Environmental Analysis

Decent Essays

Estimates of economic losses are used to help find ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions so coral reef fisheries wi suffer from too many losses. The coral reef ecosystem is known for its home to many different species and its responsibility to the human race. Coral reefs provide food such as shrimp, snappers, and parrotfish that humans depend on as a source of protein. Coral reefs are also a source of income for those who use it as sightseeing during tours or those who have fishing businesses. Unfortunately, coral reefs need to maintain certain stability in order to be able to do its job. Coral reefs need to have a specific temperature, light and water chemistry to maintain its stability. These conditions are expected to change in the future …show more content…

As mentioned in the article, there have been studies (such as the CO2-COST model) that have been created to imitate an economic model of coral reef that will go through the ecological and economic impacts of climate and ocean change to test out coral survival. The CO2-COST model also shows the long term effects of carbon dioxide emissions, bleaching, and the coral reef environment. The model can predict problems of climate systems and CO2 emission pathways uncertainty with the Monte Carlo approach. The Monte Carlo approach calculates the long term effect of climate change and ocean acidification by multiplying sea surface temperature at 3.6° longitude by 1.8° latitude and weekly time steps between 2006 and 2100. Ecological impacts can also contribute to the economic value of a resource. When creating a global demand model for coral reef fish, the use of the fishes that depend on the coral reef for environment must be taken into account. This is because it helps measure consumer affluence. So, when we add ecological impacts to the value of a resource we can predict how the value of a resource can be affected. For example, the article mentions how the quantity of a product drives the market price. If radiative forcing occurs and coral reef fishes reduce, consumers with purchasing power will buy more fish which increases the value of the fishes. Also, a smaller quantity of fishes will result in higher market prices which also increase the value of the
