The Life of an American Cowboy
Like my friend Justin said, “I just want to be a cowboy and do cowboy shit like punch cows, stomp Broncs…” People like myself will be the future of the food industry. As the world population continues to grow the need of ranchers providing beef is in higher demand and harder to find. Studies show that only 2% of the population supplies food for the entire population. If you like to eat, the number of ranchers needs to increase. Within the whole world only 37% of the land is used for agriculture purposes, 11% of the 37% of land is used for crops. That is less than half of the land in the world and it is continuing to decrease every year (Learner.org). Beef cattle are the largest portion of American agriculture
The Wild West lasted throughout the 1800’s. It is what most people think about when they think of American. Many famous people came out of the Wild West. Most of them were outlaws.
Little britches is a old American west outlaw who was born in 1879 and the date for when she died is unknown. Little Britches real name was Jennie stevenson her parents name were Danny and Lucy Stevenson they were farmers. Her one sister that we know about is name was Victoria Stevenson. She was involved with horse theft, and she sold whiskey with Cattle Annie, she also killed people and escaped jail.
During March of 2015, the most exciting thing had happened to me and my family. One of my favorite times of the year, the stock show season. A tremendous amount of time is taken to perfect our stock, it is something we take a great deal of pride in doing. My family and I wait all year for this time to come and it had finally arrived!
Masculine’s definition is stereotypically twisted. The myth and reality of the cowboy shaped today’s definition of masculinity because they have this high and strong structure they need to uphold. Masculinity is having the traditional acts as a man, such as being strong and secure. In today’s world man and women have two different mindsets. Even though we are all humans, our gender defines the way we should act due to how society makes it. The myth has affected males physically, emotionally and mentally. The idea is that they are supposed to act accordingly. In reality, everyone wants to grow up differently, so why would they be forced to act/be a certain way?
Horses running, bulls bucking, and flame throwing are all thing that you could see at a rodeo. When I was in the fifth grade I went to a rodeo with my girl scout troup . We saved up for almost a whole year. We sold cookies, earned money, and waited for the exciting weekend trip to A.J Ranch.
Rodeo has been around for several decades and has gradually become very popular around the world. The three events that have been apart of the rodeo since the beginning include saddle bronc, steer roping, and bull riding. Rodeo is a great sport for cowboys and cowgirls to compete in an event that suits their lifestyle. These contests have changed dramatically since the first official rodeo in the late 1800’s. Because the rodeo event was created in 1888, ranchers culture has been brought to the world and created into a world wide sport.
Does the race/ethnicity of Saint Mary’s students affect the interactions to the Sodexo workers? This question was inspired through a book called, The Hungry Cowboy, by Karla A. Erickson, who participated in her own observations in a restaurant viewing the social interactions among the people in the restaurant. The idea of observing and participating in social observations involved more than just asking people questions or sending out a survey, it is actively being a part of the observation and interacting with others that are also being influenced by the social norms of the restaurant. Race/ethnicity at Saint Mary’s is an issue being ignored by many, but also being addressed in small ways which provokes an interesting concept in viewing interactions among the people who work for the students versus college students who may or may not take it for granted.
In the article, “Another Year of the Chicken: U.S. Beef Supply Will Fall Again in 2015” (2014) the author, Vanessa Wong, analyzes how the the price of beef and been increasing resulting in more of a demand in chicken. Wong goes on to state that the increase in beef resulted from an extreme drought in 2012 “caused feed prices to spike and, in response, farmers thinned their herds” (Wong, 2012). More of a demand in chicken has also been noticed in restaurants. The price of chicken increased five percent as opposed to the nine percent increase in beef at Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants. However, by the year 2016 Tyson Foods has projected that the cattle supplies will be down to has little as one percent. In truth, the price of beef will decrease.
“Even if animal testing produced the cure for Aids, we’d be against it” This rhetoric notion was stated by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and summarizes the fanatical doctrine animal rights activists preach to their followings. These activists preach a doctrine of hate calling for the end of all meat eating, wearing of fur, use of animals in experiments regardless if they are beneficial or not, and even push for the end of all pets as we know of it. Howard Lyman author of “Mad Cowboy” has not only aligns himself with this rambunctious group of man haters, but supports their nazi like doctrine in his book. As the United States grew in the beginning of the 20th century the demand for meat was always needed. Fortunately for the young state of Oklahoma the prairie lands of the Great Plains were a perfect area to feed the numerous heads of animals sent to the butchers that fed America. In 1907, there were 1,206,800 animals within Oklahoma; nearly all farmers in every country of Oklahoma raised hogs (Goins and Goble, 171). Oklahoma’s ranching economy changed in the youthful years of statehood as the profession of ranching became more commercialized with intent to maximize the meat per hoof, which would increase the profit margins (Baird and Goble, 194). The Day the Cowboy’s Quit takes place during the 1880’s and revolves around the character, Hugh Hitchcock. “Hitch” can only be described as a man of his word, perhaps even to a fault. He enjoys simple pleasures, and idealizes the cowboy lifestyle. Hitch works for the W Ranch, for a rancher named Charlie Waide, to whom he looks up to as a sort of father-figure. At Charlie’s ranch, Hitch and the other cowboys are free to own their own cattle and brand them as such, so long as they don’t steal from him or any of the other ranchers. However, not all ranchers see fit the hands-off approach Charlie takes with his men. Since the W Ranch is only expanding its horizons, the cowboys, and Hitch, although optimistic, and faithful in Charlie, see this free way of life coming to an end. Soon enough, big ranch owners try to force their ways upon the W Ranch, and Charlie resists, that is, until one of his own is found to have stolen cattle. The American Frontier, or as it was also known, the Wild West was a time between the 1770s and the late 1900s. The Wild West consisted of the and west of the Mississippi river. This time period lasted for about thirty years, and during this time there were a variety of people that roamed around the towns such as outlaws, lawmen, Native Americans, townspeople, and cowboys. Out in the Wild West the towns were small but, for the size of them, they were called 'home' for many people.
Who would beef work in Agriculture because it will increase other sources. Why it would be apart of the FFA is because beef is the biggest product in the United States of America. Why is it so big is because it give people food and some people want to be apart of it. Why because people like to make money from doing this. Why they are such a huge company that's all around the world.
