With sweat dripping from his tanned brown forehead, Daniel paused from his work and glanced around the barn. The barn was humid and hot and smelled of horse manure and dry hay. But, Daniel thought as he pushed his eyes toward the double wooden barn doors leading out into a bright and blistering day, at least the barn is offering some relief from the heat.
With hands soaked in black grease Daniel returned his focus on the crippled horse buggy wheel sitting before him. “Foolish Englischer’s,” he whispered in a tired voice, “could have killed me.”
Hearing footsteps appearing outside Daniel quickly hurried back to his work. “Daett,” Sarah asked appearing in the doorway of the barn. She spoke in her thick Pennsylvanian Dutch accent.
Daniel didn’t

“William is a fine young man. He is a man that will make you a fine husband. This Englischer is a young man that is out to make you impure.”
“Todd isn’t like that, Daett. He is a good—“
“Get to your chores,” Daniel ordered Sarah drawing in a deep breath of dry hay and horse manure. “And remember that it was an Englischer who ran me off the road last night. However, they were young Englischer’s. The adults are good people who respect our way of life.”
Realizing that her father was struggling with other inner battles other than the one she had presented to him, Sarah slowly backed away from the barn into the side yard next to the kitchen. As she did a hand threw itself over her mouth. “Shhhh,” a voice laughed, “and come on.”
Pulling away from the hand Sarah spun around to see a tall, handsome, young man with thick blond hair and light green eyes smiling at her. “Todd,” she whispered. “It is not good for you to be here.”
Widening his smile Todd brushed some dirt from the knees of his blue jeans and then straightened out his brown and white argyle shirt. “I snuck through the woods to get here.”
“Where is your car?” Sarah inquired.
“Oh,” Todd bit his lower lip and then threw his eyes toward the barn, “I…it’s in the shop. Come on, I have something to show

Before Sarah could object he reached out and took her hand. “This will be fun, you’ll see.
Throwing a nervous glance over her shoulder Sarah hesitated, and then, slowly nodded her head yes. “We must be quick.”
“Great,” Todd smiled excitedly and ran Sarah toward the wood line behind the barn. Sarah reluctantly followed, wondering what Todd wanted to show her. “I have something very special planned. You’ll see.”
Running into the woods Sarah’s eyes fell on familiar sights. Trees she had climbed as a little girl, old trails her father had made, the old stream she loved to sit by and read poetry. Sweet, delicate memories flowed into her mind like warm, caressing fingers attached from loving angels, as Todd pulled her deeper into the woods. The world outside the community is exciting…but this is my home,” Sarah thought as Todd hurried slowed down to help her step over a fallen log
A few minutes later Todd jogged Sarah into a small clearing. “And voila,” he exclaimed throwing his hands toward a blue blanket lying on the ground. The blanket, Sarah saw, held a bottle of wine and a picnic basket.
“A picnic,” Sarah inquired catching her breath. “Todd, this is not the
“Oh how rude of me, my name is Sara but of course even knows me as the flower witch. Would you three like to follow me to my backyard?” Sara asked while walking that way.
“Coming right up.” Mya said happily. As she went to the kitchen to get the refreshments Hazel asked, “Anything that you have noticed Isaac?”
Sarah is startled, she asks the figure “Who are you and what do you want?”
A deliberate cough escaped her throat, “Excuse me?” she spoke her voice, but her statement disappeared among the noise of the other conversations. Standing her ground, she repeated herself louder — the same result as before. The ebony haired woman scrunched her face in exasperation, realizing she had no choice.
"Yes! I'm going to find all the goodies." She boasted. John smiled down at her taking her hand again in his.
Thanks the two of them said to Aunt Sarah for letting them into her house. Would y’all like something to drink or eat Aunt Sarah said with happiness. No thank you, the two girls said nicely. And the night went on and everyone had a peaceful night.
I gulped nervously, and jumped into the kitchen, with my eyes shut. I opened them nervously. “Huh? “ I said, relieved. “ W-What is it?” Scarlett said nervously from behind the counter.
“Here, as a welcoming gift.” He said while holding out a can of juice. It’s a good thing he can’t see my face because of the cloak I was wearing. He would probably see the bloodlust in my eyes.
“‘Tasha! There’s a town over there!” She shouted happily prancing around like a deer in a newfound stream. I smiled and my eyes scanned the horizon, dark, eerie clouds forming as we continued on.
“Nick, Haley,” Destiny said studying her neighbors house remains, “stay here and check the car.” Dana walked over to Joyce and Bobs house. She saw they were all okay, and walked a short distance back to her own children.
“But they're just stories,” Rachel whispered forcefully, leaning forward to take his hand in hers.
“I'm coming!” she exclaimed with a sigh of exhaustion and continued to trudge on through the poky cut down corn field heading towards the barn. This is going to be fun! I thought as I turned towards the barn and started walking.
Motioning for him to follow her, Karen ran across the lawn and stopped by the fence, pointing toward the side of the house, she said, “She’s over there.”
“Oh my God, he would probably turn it into a game,” Lily said exasperated at the idea. “He would make everyone show what happened to them at camp, or gym class. Or what he likes to do,” she said suddenly not wanting to think about the horror show that would ensue. The thought of what Todd would share with everyone alone would forever taint and tarnish her poor dolly. She would never be able to look at it again, nor would the dolly ever want to be looked upon. Lilly giggled causing Nathan to look at her inquisitively. “Sorry, already queasy just thinking about it.”
“Ah…Sarah, it has been a while” she said with a fake smile plastered across her lips, “I am feeling great, after all the big day is drawing near”
