People in this world love to have power over something or someone and in some cases they do not know how to use their power in the right way.Power has a negative effect on others because some rulers will take laws to the extreme just because they can and have the power to. Some rulers let the power get to their head and abuse it. For instance, Creon the king, makes a law dictating where a person can be buried or not solely based on it he feels they were doing it right or wrong thing when they died. If anyone disobeys him, he says, “You will give no one support to whoever breaks this law.”(line 59) If what happened before Creon became in power he would not be and act the way he does. Creon knows that he the thrown shouldn’t really be his and
Creon is a man of principles, who is devoted to the state as well as upholding the law in a dominant and control freak type of manner. Creon uses his first speech as a way to explain his ideas, expectations of the people, and his first law regarding the body of Polynices. Knowing the people of Thebes will disregard his word, he explains to the populace that, “Whoever places a friend above the good of his own country, he is nothing”(67). He brings up the threat of death due to the uncertainty of future rebellion and clearly states, “Our country is our safety”(68). This type of indoctrination starts from the head and trickles its way down to the people regardless of whether they want it or not. Bribery is another one of his major concerns. Knowing that corruption leads to dysfunction, rebellion, and torment, Creon poetically makes another law regarding, “Money! Nothing worse in our lives, so current, rampant, so corrupting… No limit, you make them adept at every kind of outrage, every godless crime-money!...
In the beginning of the book, Creon is portrayed as a good leader. His rules are just and
Creon uses his divine rights as a king to persuade others to do his grunt work. For example he threatens the Sentry when he says, “Upon my oath, I swear As Zeus is my god above: either you find the perpetrator of this burial… or death” -pg 147. Creon compares himself to the gods and when Antigone begins to make other question this statement he uses his stature as king to prove her wrong. The struggle for power shows that even in the time of monarchs one misplaced stone can send the entire wall of power into dismay. However much like Antigone he believes in family first, “Rightly said. Your father’s will should have your heart’s first place”- pg 157. Creon keeps Heamon under him by constantly reinforcing the idea that Antigone is a criminal. When Haemon finally stands up to Creon it is in the form of suicide. While Creon takes advice from the Chorus he still explicitly states that “Since when do I take my orders from the people of Thebes” - pg 159. Creon is threatened by the thought of a government where he does not have all the
The amount of power he had mixed with his pride led Creon to believe that he knew what the gods wanted and had the right to create laws in their place. The most prominent display of hubris is when Creon created the law stating that Polyneices was not allowed to have a proper burial, which meant that Polyneices’ spirit would not be able to move onto the next world but would instead be trapped forever. This shows the most pride because no man can create a law equal to or above divine right, but that is what Creon attempts to do. The power gained through becoming King got to Creon’s head and he became a very prideful man.
Has anyone ever influenced you actions or effected your mood? In “Antigone” there were multiple people that influenced Creon like Antigone, Harmon and the guard. The one that influenced Creon the most was Haemon. Haemon is Creon son and what he did had not only a huge effect on Creon but others too. There was a scene in Antigone where Haemon is talking to his dad about not hurting Antigone because Antigone is not only his cousin
Haemon (King Creon's son, pleading for the life of his fiancee and Creon's niece, Antigone, who has violated the king's law: "A State for one man is no State at all." The heart of the tragedy lies in Antigone's free admission that she committed the act she buried her brother's body in disobedience of King Creon's edict that the body was to remain untouched.
Millions of people around the world have power, but they do not always use their power for the right reasons. Some people in a position of power abuse their power. When a person abuses their power they inflict fear and violence on others, which has a negative effect.
Creon’s ego overpowers his sensibility and causes him to become self-absorbed. He believes his rule and his ideas should not be a guideline for his kingdom, but instead be “obeyed” by all Theban citizens. He concludes he is the “wisest king”; therefore, he is too
There was a time in the middle of football season where my coach and I were arguing of what my coverage zone was in a passing play, I was so sure that I was correct that I argued with him about it in front of the whole team. He ended up telling me to do it his way for a play, I ended up getting an interception as soon as I listened to him. Almost the exact same situation happened to Creon in a lengthy play called Antigone by Sophocles. It’s a play about how the king Creon refused to give Antigone's close brother a proper burial, just for breaking the law. Now Antigone has gone on a quest to bury her brother.n the end Creon needed to learn that sometimes you have to take the advice of others and see their side of the story instead of thinking
Power's Effect on Others Independence is not a very common trait, which is why people follow others in their actions and emotions. People's actions are mostly based on what the people around them are doing. People who have power tend to abuse it and can cause violence and cause people to have fear. The first effect that power can have on an individual and others is fear.
People that are seduced by hate and darkness, that have power, use their power in dark, negative, vindictive ways. Power can have a negative effect on others when people use it in a controlling or dictating way. Power can influence people in a negative way. When people are influenced by this negativity it turns them into dictators. These dictators use their power to force people, under their rule, to do their bidding.
King Creon is absolute proof that excessive power will bring the worst in one. As stated in the play, Antigone, King Creon is willing to kill his own niece for his own personal gratification because of his excessive power. This shows that excessive power is abuse and will wreak novice for everyone in their path. For example in Antigone creon says “ If I permit my own family to rebel, how shall I earn the world's obedience?” (Sophocles) this shows the creon does not care if he has to kill his family in order to
The way a society is run and how things are enforced also can cause negative feelings towards power. It can cause many to rebel if they feel that a leader has too much control, and it can also make people covet and desire such strength leaders have. In Julius Caesar, Cassius
Holding responsibility for being a king seems too had been hard for Creon. For he was not originally supposed to be king instead he could have felt he had no other choice. Wanting to better his people and the town from the tragedy that had occurred early with king Oedipus. He showed sign of stress of his people returning to dark times when there was no king. He became extremely strict on punishment for laws that was broken and although he might not completely mean to come off brutal but in some people eyes including Antigone he did. The vison he had towards punishment showed major role in public law.
The meaning of power is to have possession of control, authority, or influence over others. One could argue that to have power has a positive effect on others, although it is very clear that power affects people in a negative way. Take Hitler for example, or the King Creon from the drama Antigone. These two leaders make it completely obvious that power affects people negatively from concentration camps to being forced to follow a law that is morally unjust. These are the reasons that power has a negative impact on others.
