Today the 8th grade made crêpes. I thought it was an interesting recipe with simple ingredients. Crêpes are a traditional French dish. I watched Ms. Zavada do this lesson since I had never made crepes before. I actually tried to make one with the left over batter after the students made theirs. I was not so great a making them...my crêpe resembled a brown pancake. When Ms. Zavada discussed the recipe with the students, she focused on how the recipe came to be, going over the directions with the students, and what a crêpe should look like once it has completely cooked. The directions, of course, were very importantsince the students need to know how to read the recipe. Going over the common appearance of a crêpe was also important.Ms. Zavada …show more content…

Zavada went to each group and divided their dough for them equally. She puts more emphasis on equality in her lessons than I normally do. I believe that emphasis should be placed on fairness and equality in the classroom, yet I am also realistic about it. Deep down, I am a realist at heart. I know the world is not fair, but my students probably do not realize this yet. If my students want to have fairness in their school environment they should be asked to decide on what they think is considered to be fair in the classroom. For example, if I taught a group of students on how to complete the cut out cookie recipe I mentioned earlier, I would ask the students to divide the cookie up equally among their group members. I would not do it for them. By making the students divide up the dough themselves I can get the students to communicate with each other on what is considered to be fair.
Teaching Family Consumer Sciences is not just about teaching students how to skills such as cooking and nutrition. It really is about life skills and how people use them every day. I know that as a teacher, I can teach my students those life skills that they will use in many parts of their lives in the future. They may not even realize that they are learning. They also may not understand the importance of what they are learning. However, I know that my students will use the skills they will acquire in the
