Crevecoeur Definition Of American Culture

Often times people believe that where someone comes from defines a person. J. Hector St. John de Crevecoeur was a french aristocrat who wrote a passage from his collection of essays called “Letters from an American Farmer.” He has traveled across many American colonies and has a strong knowledge of versatile backgrounds. Crevecoeur uses his use of language to persuade others how Europeans are true Americans.

Culture can be seen from the interaction of many things such as history, activities and developments. It is also represented in the form of people live. Living in two different countries is a unique experience that gives you a new way of thinking. In my case I have lived in Colombia and now in the United States. Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences between this to countries are notable in geography, festivities, economic and food.

The concept culture have some difficult meanings. One of them is culture as in music, preforming, theatre and so. The other meaning of it is culture as in Peoples Identity. It tells something about who you are, where you come from, and what you believe in, in this way, we can see that People

Although the present day American is a totally a different person, at the close of the Revolutionary War the same individual was a European immigrant impacted by the nature of the American continent. In St. Jean de Crevecoeur’s perspective, an American is a race that results from a mixture of Swedes, Dutch, French, Irish, Scotch, and Englishmen (48). This race consists of unique type of people who are not governed by laws as strict as they experienced in Europe. They are a breed of people who had no home and no country in Europe. This paper discusses what the American was thought to be, in view of St. Jean de Crevecoeur’s Letters from an American Farmer.

Culture is defined by specific values and belief systems. Culture is who you are, your surroundings, and your traditions. Culture helps shape our behavior, since we're born,a nd raised into a specific culture. I was raised in a Haitian family, and growing up Haitian was definately interesting. Growing up in a strict family, and being the only girl, out of 4 brothers, I grew uo literally walking on a straight line. It was like, if you are a girl, you are looked down on, if you do anything wrong. You are also looked at, as if you've shamed your own family. Growing up in the haitian culture has raised me to be just like my mother.

Culture is a set of ideals and values about life that are widely shared among people and that guide specific behaviors. Differences, as well as similarities, can be seen when comparing world cultures. We communicate with each other, we feed ourselves with food, and when we sleep we often dream. However, we speak different languages, eat different types of foods, and dream different ways. We call these cultural differences. What causes them is not always obvious to the ordinary person (Nancy). I feel culture is what really sets us apart from each other and what makes us unique as individuals and families.

1.)Crevecoeur describes several qualities that makes Americans a different developing society, and many attributes that we still see today. “Industry, good living, selfishness, litigiousness, country politics, the pride of freemen, religious indifference are their characteristics.” (Crevecoeur 313) While these characteristics may not seem to necessarily represent Americans in a positive light, Crevecoeur accurately portrays the foundation of American values that continue today. Ambition, religious freedom, and self-importance dominate our society today, as well as, our egos, pride, and self-reliance. It is difficult to define the qualities of an American, considering we are a constantly evolving nation, however Crevecoeur minimizes the importance of American adventure.

The world culture has many different meanings depending on the person you ask. Each person has their own view on what they think culture is. To me, culture could be defined as different puzzle pieces that come together to create a person socially, physically and mentally. According to Chapter Three, Culture and the Culture-Learning Process, authors Cushner, McClelland, and Safford (2009) talks about culture and defines it as “Culture determines, to a large extent, people 's thoughts, ideas, patterns of interaction, and material adaptions to the world around them” (p. 61). Crevecoeur did not set out to glorify the Americans and make them far more modern, forward-thinking and liberal than any of the European monarchies and Kingdoms that still held sway in Europe and parts of the world when he released his book. His focus, I believe was to introduce the new nation as a unique society that came to be due to the culture, perspectives, beliefs and traditions that was influenced by the need to survive. By adoption and by understanding the value of each refugee, each pioneer and each immigrant involved in the new nation have come to believe that all men are created equal and that hard work is the only way to go; while it is nice to be born into moneyed families, in America your hard work determines your lot in life. Crevecoeur does not go on in the sections indicated that Europeans are the opposite of these; his message is clear. To his then readers he wanted them to see America as a place where equality, freedom and hard work determine one’s quality

Crevecoeur views American life superior for the poor and the suffering arriving from Europe who are broken and disheartened. He views America as a great asylum for the poor of Europe. He states “here are no kings, no bishops, no ecclesiastical dominion, no invisible power giving to a few a very visible one.”

When comparing cultures, one must form a definition of what culture is. Culture can be easily defined as the social behavior and normality’s found in human societies. It can also be easily made up of a composed arrangement of educated conduct and thought designs. Culture is a sorted out framework since it includes many parts. Throughout the world, there are many cultures that are both very different and also very similar. "Culture encompasses religion, food, what we wear, how we wear it, our language, marriage, music, what we believe is right or wrong, how we sit at table, how we greet visitors, how we behave and one million other things." To best understand a culture you should take the time to absorb their way of life to really appreciate their culture.

Each person is unique and have different beliefs and lifestyles. It is very rare to find two individuals who are exactly alike when referring to the way of thinking and interpreting many things. People may come from the same background, but tend to have different perspectives about certain situations. Culture is defined in many ways and can be defined differently in the workplace, in a family, or at a restaurant. As stated before, people can obtain a certain culture. Different generations may inherit the same culture, and an organization may have a certain culture they practice.
