The role of the family cannot be emphasized enough in the process of socialization of the child. The family is responsible for transforming a child into a sociable being; build emotional bonds, develop morals and values, participate in effective use of language and public conduct and body control. Other institutions as the schools, church, peer groups, media and sports help to pass on social expectations and contribute significantly to the process of socialization.
According to Lochan (2005) the context of parenting is difficult today as the family is competing with the other agents of socialization; experience and issues such as love and violence which would have been previously experienced within the family are now being done by the media and peer groups. This changing socialization pattern is as a result of the changing role of parents and the family structure, influenced by factors such as globalization as more mothers are going out into the world of work.
The nurturing and guidance one received from parental relationship at the primary level of socialization now take place in other context. The mass media is charged with the major responsibility of socialization and is not designed to take charge of responsibilities of the family previously mentioned, especially cultural and moral education.
This decline in the family’s ability to carry out its function has become a challenge for children; they go into
Youth violence is one of the major concerns all over the world today. Youth violence is an unavoidable consequence in the 21st century and it cannot be stopped but it can be reduced. Youth violence involves young people hurting other young people. Youth violence typically includes teens between the ages of 10 to 24, but it can also begin in early childhood age. Most common youth violence are Bullying in schools, School Shootings, Childhood abuse, Suicide, Poor parenting, Pressure, Violent Tv shows, Media, the internet, social media, Violent games and much more. Youth violence can be found at schools, home, our neighborhoods and all over the places. Teen violence has made an impact causing many devastating incidents in our world today. As stated by James M. Henslin (2014), the agents of socialization are the people or groups that affect our self-concept, attitudes, behaviors, or other orientations toward life. In other words, agents of socialization are the building blocks that influences a child's interaction with people that are appropriate for their social position. During the process of socialization, we learn how to adapt to the norms of society through our families, peers, media, school, religion, and sports. It affects and shapes the person that we are today. When accounting for socialization, cultural factors, race, and gender are a major component that can have a significant impact because each culture has its own norms. Although socialization occurs throughout
While the role of parents is crucial throughout the whole childhood of a child, the significance of this in terms of the child’s development transitions over time. During early childhood, studies have found out that the importance of parents and guardians are much crucial for the social, emotional, and psychological development of the child (Hay, 2005). However, studies also said that as the children grow up, their development becomes more dependent towards their interaction with their peers. This opens up the question regarding the utmost importance of the parents in a child’s relationship with his peer groups in different stages of his life.
It is true that no parent has a manual to raise a child but some parents are just terrible at parenting. Maturity among parents play a big role in the child’s behavior. It is very common that children with teenage parents have a negative impact on their behavior. This can be compared with single parents or divorced parents. Statistics are proven that children are behaving worse when they have something impactful happen in their life. Statistics shows that 50% of first marriages, 67% of second marriages, and 74% of third marriages end in divorce. This has been and will always be an impactful event for a child’s life and it definitely affects their behavior. During the 1980s, seventy-seven percent of children lived with both parents but in 2000s it went down to sixty-seven percent of children. Sixty-three percent of teen suicides and ninety percent of runaways come from fatherless homes. Eighty-five percent of children with behavioral problems come from fatherless homes. The statistics continue to build up and prove that bad parenting or missing parents affects children’s behaviors. Children’s behavior is impacted by the inexperience and irresponsible parents during this time period.
There are different types of violence in the world. One of the biggest types of violence is youth violence. According to cdc.gov, “Youth violence is a significant public health problem that affects thousands of young people each day, and in turn, their families, schools, and communities. Youth violence typically involves young people hurting other peers who are unrelated to them and who they may or may not know well. Youth violence can take different forms. Examples include fights, bullying, threats with weapons, and gang-related violence. A young person can be involved with youth violence as a victim, offender, or witness.” The facts about youth violence are disturbing. Some of these facts according to who.int are, “Worldwide some 200 000 homicides occur among youth 10–29 years of age each year, which is 43% of the total number of homicides globally each year. Homicide is the fourth leading cause of death in people aged 10-29 years, and 83% of these homicides involve male victims. For each young person killed, more sustain injuries requiring hospital treatment. When it is not fatal, youth violence has a serious, often lifelong, impact on a person's physical, psychological and social functioning. Youth violence greatly increases the costs of health, welfare and criminal justice services; reduces productivity; and decreases the value of property.” In this essay, I will talk about how youth violence has affected my life, what the causes of youth violence are, and what I and

To find a correlation between immigration and crime we must look at cultural differences. Thorsten Sellin, a sociologist from the University of Pennsylvania, argues that conflicting conduct norms between the old and new societies is the principal cause of crime among youth. Sellin points to immigrant’s values in that they often deviate from receiving societies (Sellin, 1938). To summarize, in the absence of clear cut rules, individuals are likely to deviate from norms that are not self-evident. Sellin’s argument points to an increase in crime and delinquency because migrant populations are unable or unsuccessful to cultural adaption to the hosting society. Edwin Sutherland, a criminologist in Pennsylvania, also points to acculturation as a connection to crime regarding immigrants (Sutherland, 1978). Sutherland argues that the blame should not be on immigrant’s cultural origins but instead the acculturation into American Society, which would naturally affect the second-generation immigrants. Sutherlands view has led some to believe that second generation immigrants may be more crime prone. Sutherland states that “..this acculturation perspective addresses the problem of cultural assimilation and its effect on delinquency and risky behavior” (Sutherland, 1978). Sutherland brings up a valid point in that the reason we statistically see later generations of immigrants committing crime is that they are “naturalizing” to American society. However, even
Child socialization is important for individuals because it determines how a child will socialize as an adult. In this paper I am going to discuss about my socialization as a child. I will discuss about the three most important outcomes that I learned from my family of origin. In addition, I will explain about the methods of socialization and the parenting styles my caregivers used have helped shape my personality. Furthermore, I will talk about an institution that helped me with shaping my values, and my identity. In addition, I will identify a situation that shows that I was an active agent in my own child socialization. Lastly I will explain about the socialization goals for my children and how my own prejudices have impacted my children’s way of thinking.
Another traditional responsibility of family is the primary socialization and social control of children (Ken Browne, 1998, p.256). Children are inculcated with values and norms embraced or accepted by the society. In addition, rules are set by parents to regulate and guide children’s behaviour. However, with the emergence of childcare services and promotion of school education by states, such responsibility is
Violent crimes occur more than one could even imagine. However, there is definitely a questionable aspect to these crimes within their court procedures. If one were to take a closer look at specific court procedures of crimes having to deal with mental illnesses, it will be determined that it is viewed differently oppose to a sane person. When taking mental illnesses into consideration when referring to criminal behavior, there is an obvious difference between actions. There begins to be a question of responsibility within these criminals. It is fair to say that there is a difference with court procedures. The imperativeness of the courts is extremely important when referring to any case. There are biological and social risk factors that pertain to any given case. There is a question as to if these should be taken into consideration when enduring the court process as an entirety. By taking a deeper look at the biological aspects within a case, the justice system will be able to give more accurate sentences.
It may be argued that the media disproportionately exposes violent crime because is more serious, but with crime in Canada at an all time low, why is it that the media only advertises the numbers associated with violent crime to be at an all time low and not all crime. How does online news outlets cover the decrease in crime in relation to violent crime and non-violent crime? The variables that will be used are online news outlets ' stories and articles regarding the crime drop, and the reduction in crime (violent vs non violent). The sample will consist of popular online news outlets who 's articles will be looked over in order to determine what they deem important in regards to the crime drop. It is predicted that mainly only violent crime statistics are written about because it comes off as the most exciting, regardless of the fact that it is less common.
Developmental theory is the view that criminality is a dynamic process, influenced by social experiences as well as individual characteristics (Siegel, 2014, p. 228). This theory includes three views of criminal career development. The first being the life course theory which is a theory that focuses on changes in criminality over the life course brought about by shifts in experience and life events (Siegel, 2014, p. 228). The second being propensity theory which is the view that a stable unchanging feature, characteristic, property, or condition, such as defective intelligence or impulsive personality, makes some people crime prone (Siegel, 2014, p. 228). The third view is the trajectory theory. Trajectory theory is the view that there are multiple independent paths to a criminal career and that there are different types and classes of offenders (Siegel, 2014, p. 228).
The family is given emphasis on its contribution on the development of the child. Ventura (1994) as mentioned by Peralta in her book society, culture and personality (2009) said “the family molds the competence and character of the child”. The connection between the parent and the child provides security to the child that allows him to explore, elaborate, initiate, imagine and manipulate the environment and directly affects the social and emotional security of the child (p.95).
Moral features among the parents are a significant concept that proves restriction on parenting is necessary. Moral is one of the most abstract human behaviors that concerns parents ' abilities to have autonomy and responsibility when they take care of their offspring. Parents are expected to have a capacious and high ethical responsibility in order to support their offspring emotionally and financially, at all time in any cases. It is their duties and obligations to show interests, to spend time, to give encouragements, and to teach disciplines…etc. There is a wide range of the ways parents can illustrate affections on
