Racism is defined as the systematic subordination of certain racial groups by those groups in power . As a society, we must first eradicate ignorance in order to defeat racism. We must acknowledge that people have different ways of viewing the world and that even though someone may have a different opinion than you, it is not necessarily wrong. The idea that people have different ways of viewing the world stems from standpoint theory. Standpoint theory is based on the concept that people view the world differently depending on their social standing . In my culture, the environment is clean. We have clean houses, clean community spaces, and clean schools. We tend to avoid places that are dirty. The housing is generally sufficient for our needs, and we have compassion for those whose living spaces are not suitable for their lifestyle. Yet no person in my culture would offer their home or car to someone who needed it more. Appearance is extremely important in my culture.

What I learned is that the social construction of race is the way society sees race. For example, stereotyping people of different races, or what people consider a race is. Is your race the color of your skin, your physical features, your heritage? Or something else entirely? Because this question has no definitive answer, society constructs their own definition of "race".

Race is a Social Construct Although race does not exist from a biological perspective, race does exist as an idea and social construct. Race is ingrained in the history of American culture. Our society is conditioned to think racially. Our views of people automatically put them in racial categories. We make certain value judgments about them based on little more than the color of their skin.

Race has been a controversial topic for many years. Depending on your race it can be a blessing or a misfortune. According, to articles such as “Ten Things Everyone Should Know About Race” or “Race: Is It a Valid Issue?” they all come to the conclusion that race is a social construct because race cannot be determined by genetics or the color of the skin. There is no such thing as subspecies we are all human beings. Yet, for many years’ people of European ancestry (whites) have committed monstrous acts towards people of color. Whites enslaved people of color tearing countless families apart, and taking away liberties that every human being should possess. In this essay, I will be discussing Race and Ethnic Identity, and how it is racially constructed. I found the presentation very interesting, to the point that most of my guesses were wrong, just based off the looks and perception of the celebrities. This presentation made me actually look at race and appearance in a different way because you never know what the person ethnic background is by just looking at the person. I have learned a lot on race and ethnicity and how things were categorized in the past, and as the years passed that other categories were put in to place for people to choose the identity that they were comfortable with choosing.

Many of us have different ideas of when talking about culture. We define culture as one's behavior and beliefs that distinguish us between one group to another. Culture has been around for many centuries, modern human culture would have been differentiated with language, tools and weapons. The different genetic makeup for the population would also reflect the major differentiation in culture between the related groups. I believe culture started because of population growing and people trying to relate with one another with their own common lifestyles.

Firstly, when it comes to describing women that are non –white, different terminology is used by different authors or researchers, however in doing so this generally creates inconsistencies and in some form it loses value. For example , the term women of colour can be used to refer to ,African- American women, Asian, Hispanic, Native American and Indian ( generally used in the USA) (Davidson, 1997).
