The intro to chapter 9 in Cunningham & Allington(p.150) made me chuckle a bit, as I have many times asked that especially to my youngest son who “strongly disliked” writing up all the way through 8th grade. And he was not that amused over my question. I do believe that he was mostly thinking about how he could get out of the writing task altogether more than what to write. Fortunately now, a changed student, as a freshman in High School his attitude towards writing has greatly improved. I can only imagine how many other students are facing the same frustrations, and how inventive teachers have to be to encourage all students to write.
My daughter, on the other hand, loves to write, and are taking Creative Writing in High School. This
For many writing comes naturally, for myself it is sometimes a struggle. Back in high school I could sum up my view of writing with two words, a battle. I avoided writing like it was the plague, this continued through my first few years of college right after high school. I have since evolved from being apprehensive from my irrational fears that kept me from writing, and now am able to pick up a pad and pencil and enjoy my time writing.
I have always struggled with my writing assignments. If I had the option not to write I would take that option with no hesitation. I truly dreaded it, when we have to type essays. Now, I have been into two English classes where I have felt a little more comfortable in being able to write something without being so embarrassed or ashamed in what I’m about to turn it. I still feel horrible about my spelling and grammar.
Writing for me began as a kindergartener. My teacher made me write my name over and over again until I could write it without making any mistakes. In elementary school all my teachers taught me to put words I had learned together to form sentences. I was eventually taught to avoid fragments, and
The day I first found out that I did not like writing was when I was in high school. To me writing has always been a long process. When I had my first writing assignment in high school, it took me so long to get it done. I would easily get distracted because of anything, whether it be a bright sunny yellow bee buzzing or a big diesel truck passing by I would get distracted. This would lead me into not finishing my assignment till the last day. Another reason I don’t like
I feel like most teachers worry more about grades and getting the writing done as soon as possible and not taking their time in helping students gain better writing skills and improve themselves. Students should be able to choose what they want to write about so that we can feel inspired in our writings thus having a better end product for teachers to read and be satisfied with. If teachers are constantly criticizing our writings and telling us what to write about then they never really know what a student’s potential really is because most likely they will rush to try to satisfy the teachers needs than theirs. I also agree that teachers should worry more about a person’s writing than about the mechanics of a paper, however; I also realize that in today’s society free writing isn’t really “approved” in almost every class. In every English class I have had my teachers focused more about the end result that is timing us on essays, and grading our papers based off grammar/mechanics and not the process writing
Writing is an essential tool and has been noted as a precursor for great speaking by teachers at all grade levels. However, with writing being an important aspect throughout one’s academic career and beyond, it is one of the most tedious tasks to teach. It sounds like a cliché, but in order to get better at something, one has to keep completing the task and each time, accomplish something different while maintaining prior knowledge. There are various ways that enhance a student’s writing abilities and the focus of these research strategies will prove that encouraging students to write enhances writing.
During the whole situation from the moment we pulled up out side the house I was very nervous and wanting to give a good impression only made this worse. Once we had entered the house and met Tom I calmed down a little. I was surprised at my own reaction of distaste when I entered the house and encounter a grumpy drunk so early in the morning; I had no prior knowledge of his situation (Claire later informed me that his wife had recently divorced him and he was having difficulties coping).
In order to provide students with the best education and future possible, writing in schools needs to be focused on more in depth. Everyone needs to have a basic understanding of grammar, spelling, sentence structure, and other writing aspects. This is so they can communicate correctly when they get a job in the future and be confident in their writing and communication skills. If someone is not comfortable speaking and/or writing to communicate with others, they are not going to be willing to go out of their comfort zone when they have to communicate with others. With this being said, teachers and schools need to take larger steps to ensure that their students are receiving the proper writing skills needed to be successful in the near future.
It is hard for me to focus on writing. When you read my writings, it is very obvious within the first paragraph. My work is much better, and more enjoyable to read, when I write in a quiet place with few distractions. My teachers never really questioned my writing until 10th grade. I could wait till the night before a paper was due, crank one out in under an hour, and the teacher would use it for an example paper in class the next day. Ms. Yard, my 10th grade teacher, was the first to call my writing bluff. I learned that writing was much more then writing. In order to have a good writing piece, as explained in “What Writing Is”, you have to be able to write something that is
Without thoughtful consideration from teachers, writing across the curriculum becomes busy work and loses its value. In addition, students will put less effort into writing when they know it will not be carefully read. Writing must be graded based content in addition to grammar, and should not require students to summarize, but to create a valid argument and provide support for this argument. When students are required to write across the curriculum, learning is enriched and the possibilities are endless.
Writing isn't always something that everyone can do. Writing takes a lot of thinking and you need to figure out what you want to write about. So for me writing takes a lot of time because I am not the best on writing or figuring out what to write about. I have a negative experience with writing during 8th grade.
Yeah, the answer is not to. I hate writing. It is the worse part of school not for the actual writing or the process to get there. But the way we are forced to write. It’s not just me that this is coming from me. I have learned a lot this year not about writing but about what writing could be. Teachers expect that students write about topic that they have no idea why or how it relates to them. What do they expect when students never get anything done?
I can honestly say that I neither like, nor dislike, writing. I have always had a hard time writing a paper it’s hard for me to come up with things to put in them I feel like I may ramble on. I have written a lot of letters just about every day activities to my dad (he was away for a while) I have written poems about feelings, letters to a boyfriend, lyrics to songs, grocery lists, when I was younger I loved writing little notes to my mom and sister and I could go on and on about different things that I wrote. I actually love writing but I don’t like structured writing I rather write a letter about how I feel or a letter to someone than a structured essay. I find it difficult to set it in the right format that the teacher wants. I feel this way because my senior year in high school our English teacher just gave us a rubric and topic and told us to write I was lost and didn’t understand what was being asked of me but this event has taught me I always need to make sure I understand what my teacher expects from me on a writing assignment.
Learning how to first write, I believe, for kids is always fascinating, because it is something new to them. Starting out is simple, such as writing letters of the alphabet and slowly progressing into writing words, sentences, paragraphs, and whole papers. Even though I was a creative kid, through the years of elementary school it began to become tougher. I ran into obstacles when I was told to write a comic strip, a short story, and a paper about ourselves. Not being able to write what was coming to my mind in a manner that made sense frustrated me. Throughout elementary school I struggled with writing because I never figured out how to fix this problem. During these years I succeeded in reading and I would soon hope to in writing.
Writing can be very hard especially for first time writers. There are a lot of things and process that they need to undergo in order to master the art of writing. However, it will be hard for them also to accomplish their writing task if they don't have the attitude towards writing just like most writers do.
