A distrustful, amateur card counter on the run from agents unknowingly teams up with a married, rich casino owner to dupe another casino. Being rich hasn’t bought him what he wants. Dan decides he wants to see how the “other half” lives. He disguises himself and boards the same cruise as Cynthia. Vinny and Vito also book the cruise. Cynthia and Dan, in disguise, run into each other and don’t take a liking to each other. When Cynthia gets rid of her disguise, Dan notices the beautiful blonde. She notices Dan too. Before he can get to know her, she disappears, but she also leaves behind a gold earring. Dan finds it and considers her, his Cinderella. The ship docks in Acapulco and the Captain of the ship, slips a bag of marijuana in Dan’s suitcase. Dan spots Cynthia and follows her, leaving behind his suitcase. Drug inspectors find the marijuana. She thinks he’s a PI and she eventually lets her guard down and tells him the truth about being a card counter. Dan offers to give her a loan, but she turns him down. She has another idea: she wants him to become her partner. She wants him to be part of a card counting team. Resistant, he eventually agrees. He spends the night with Jorge’s family and their goat, LUCIA, not knowing Pepe and Paco or Vinny and Vito are watching him. He trades beds with Lucia. The police abducted Lucia, thinking they have Dan. When Dan doesn’t show up the next morning, Cynthia feels betrayed and heads to the airport. Dan and Jorge race to stop Cynthia. They find her and they all head to the police where they find Lucia. Lucia eats the bag of marijuana, destroying the evidences. Dan and Cynthia head to Puerto Rico to card count at a casino. They moved together to the Muck in the Florida Everglades and lived in Tea Cake's Shanty after the death of Joe. Tea Cake and Janie spent all the time they had together. They remained in constant tune with the nature and even went fishing together. This was the type of lifestyle Janie envisioned all her life. All of Janie’s previous relationships was based off of the spouse. Janie was never allowed to be herself and live the life she wanted. Tea Cake let her be herself. He loved her as she was and accepted all she dreamed of. He encouraged her to be what she wanted to be, to follow her goals, her dreams, and her aspirations. Janie had finally found her the man she had always been looking for. She loved him with everything she had. Janie would do anything for Tea Cake. They had the kind of everlasting love that she had hoped for all her life. Thing were going well for the new couple until a bad storm hit and Tea Cake gets bit by a dog trying to save Janie. Tea Cake ultimately get rabies and begins to act so distraught that Janie is forced to kill him. She killed Tea Cake in loving manner and could not bear watch him suffer
At first, she is quite against having another marriage, but Tea Cake is somehow able to charm his way into her heart. Following their marriage, both Tea Cake and Janie move to Jacksonville. Their relationship starts off rough with Tea Cake abandoning Janie at night and slipping some of her money into his pocket. She begins to believe that this was all he married her for, but he is able to successfully defend himself. After awhile, the two decide to move to the Everglades. While attempting to escape from a hurricane in their new home, Tea Cake is bit by a crazy dog and is never the same again. When Tea Cake is convinced that Janie has cheated on him, he threatens to kill her...forcing Janie to pull the trigger first. After her trial and her being found innocent, she decides to travel back to Eatonville where her recounting of her story

When Beth goes out looking for Ellen she gets in an accident and is taken to the hospital. That night Dan goes to Alex’s apartment and attacks her and tries to strangle her, but then stops. While they are catching their breath Alex tries to stab Dan with a kitchen knife, but he gets it from her and leaves. Dan brings Beth home from the hospital and helps take care of her, Dan is downstairs as she starts a bath when Beth discovers Alex in the room with a knife. Alex attacks her and Dan hears the screaming and rushes in to attack Alex. He tries to drown her in the tub, but she comes back alive and is then shot by Beth.
Right outside of Las Vegas, several miles off the beaten path, there is a lowkey casino that sits back on a hill, surrounded by artificial palm trees and a bauble of cheap christmas light. This casino is bordered by an abandoned building on the eastern end, and a brothel on its southern side, and the only light is from the full moon shining bright over the western sky. The T-shaped alley way, formed by the three buildings, are famous for their high prostitution business. Inside the casino, there’s a three hundred and sixty degree bar that splits the entire building in half. From the door, on the right half, the building is set up like a normal casino with your average blackjack table and lottery machines. On the left half, there is a club set up to with women with little to no raiment present.
Throughout the entire novel, one of the main themes expressed in the famous and well-known novel by Dean Koontz is loyalty. Loyalty can be seen by several of the characters portraying these characteristics. One of the characters that show the most loyalty is Dan, who is always loyal to Laura never leaving her side through anything. Dan shows loyalty by always giving protection to Laura and Melanie, putting them first always, even above himself. Always busy and dedicated to his work and Laura he is able to put the pieces together and solve the case. Without his careful actions and extreme measures, this whole case would probably be unsolved and Melanie would have killed everyone who tormented her, even herself. His

While Chip and Alaska are drinking they attempt to play truth or dare. Where Pudge is dared to make out with Alaska. During the time they are making out they fall asleep. Then Alaska receives a phone call, after the phone call she runs back in crying and begs Pudge and the Colonel to set off fireworks so she can leave. She gets away with getting caught. The next morning the Mr. Starnes, comes to the boy’s room to that them that Alaska has died in a car accident. They both try for months and months to find out how Alaska died when they remembered that the day she left was the day her mother past away and she had forgot, which would make her want to leave. They still never found out if it was an accident or suicide. TO remember Alaska they pull the greatest prank known to Culver Creek. They invite a stripper for their speaker’s day. As Lara yells over the speaker for him to strip, Mr. Starnes stops him but the he knows it’s a way for Pudge and them of remembering Alaska and they don’t get in trouble. In the end Pudge finally accepts Alaska’s death and knows that everyone will always remember
