Dance Is A Sport Essay

Endurance, discipline, focus, commitment, and responsibility are just a few of the qualities of an athlete (PhraseMix). By definition a sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment (Hacker). Dance pushes dancers physically and mentally, to be a great dancer and have a successful team everyone needs to be at their physically best. “Dancers train every morning and some evenings, stretching, doing technique, some weight lifting and core strengthening workouts, and learning, polishing, and critiquing dances” (McNitt-Gray). Doing all of those things builds up the skill not only as an individual, but as a team working together to look their best when they perform.

As I've read many of the opposing views, and asking people amongst my school, many of them say dance isn't a sport, because doing a turn is easy, if someone based every sport by one movement they do, then swinging a bat, dribbling a basketball, catching a ball would all be easy. But all of those activities have multiple parts that make them function. In an article about high school football player Chris Altonji states “Every time I see Poms or De La Cru perform, I am extremely impressed by their flexibility and coordination. Dancers clearly have to go through strenuous practices to be able to pull off those performances. But that’s just what dancing is, a performance, not a sport.” Although, dancers work very hard and do very strenuous things, all they are, are performers. He also mentions that dance competitions, do not classify dance as a sport because they “don’t fit the requirements of the definition” which is that sports compete with two or more teams (Altonji). Altonji’s opinion although agrees with dance being physically demanding, it does not fit the
