In 2003 there was a mass slaughter and and rape of the people in Darfur. This happened to so many people like men, women, and children. Many people suffered from the mass torturing. This is known as a genocide. The genocide has been going on for about 13 years and is still going on today. This genocide is the first genocide in the 21st century. The darfur genocide was gruesome. Since the Darfur bloodshed was gruesome and had people attacking, it led the United States and Court to believe it was considered a genocide. Darfur is a horrible time in history for so many people. A lot of times it’s because people don’t understand what a genocide is. A lot of things happen when there is a genocide. “By revoking US cooperation and assistance, it has done very little to impact the Court’s affect on America”(Risch, Stuart W. pg.10). A lot of people didn’t want the United States cooperation and assistance to be revoked. They thought this was an act of hurting them. The people believed that the United States and court had to figure out a way to work together. If the United States worked with the court than against it the US would gain more. “The United States fears that the court may ultimately divest the UNSC of its prerogative in determining whether an act of aggression has occurred”(Risch, Stuart W. pg.8). In the Darfur genocide the UNSC (United Nations Security Council) tried to figure out whether it was a genocide or not. The UNSC first considered the crisis in Darfur more than a year ago. “Some people in the UNSC started referring to Darfur as a genocide”(Ozkan, Mehmet and Birol Akgun pg.8 ). Eventually, the UNSC started calling Darfur a genocide. “The government never had the chance to finish what they started doesn’t mean it wasn’t a genocide and they won’t try again”(Sanders, Edmund pg.8). “Darfur is ranked as the bloodiest century in history”(Sanders,Edmund pg.2). The Darfur bloodshed caused so much harm to so many people. The word genocide has so much power. “Labeling Darfur as a genocide led government officials to hide and reduce their actions”(Sanders, Edmund pg. 2). Some people say that the Darfur bloodshed is an ongoing genocide. Other people question whether it meets the legal definition of genocide. Two consecutive American presidents and several activist groups have defined Darfur as a genocide. I believe that the darfur bloodshed is a genocide.
