When people think of the word, ‘holocaust’, they probably think of World War II, Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, and concentration camps. In reality, there have been many holocausts before and since the most famous Holocaust in Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945 (Roth). Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary defines the word, ‘holocaust’, as “a thorough destruction involving extensive loss of life especially through fire”. This definition describes the Nazi Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, and genocide in Darfur, to name a few (UHRC). In 1933, Hitler’s Nazi regime took power in Germany at a time where the people lacked patriotism and were upset with their government. After losing World War I, Hitler’s anti-Semitism mindset was based on his ideals …show more content…
4). In 1913, “three of the Young Turks helped to gain control of Turkey’s government via a coup” (UHRC, par. 10). They wanted to create a “great and eternal land called Turan with one language and one religion” (UHRC, par. 10). The genocide began on April 24, 1915, when “300 Armenian political leaders, educators, writers, clergy and dignitaries in Istanbul were taken from their homes, briefly jailed and tortured, then hanged or shot” just for being a non-believer in the Muslim religion (UHRC, par. 19). After this, many Armenian men were being arrested for no real reason. They were then taken and shot or bayoneted by Turkish soldiers. Now, it was time for the Armenian women and children. These people were “ordered to pack a few belongings and be ready to leave home, under the pretext that they were being relocated to a non-military zone for their own safety when they were actually being taken on death marches heading south toward the Syrian Desert” (UHRC, par. 21). Over a million people took part in these “death marches” with almost ¾ of people dying while traveling through the desert. After these two genocides, one may look at the past and ask, how could this death and destruction possibly happen again? The bad part is that it is happening again in the Darfur region of Sudan. This region is “about the size of Texas” (DarfurScores, par. 1) and “five thousand die every month”
The Holocaust occurred in the 1940s, and it mainly featured the murders of Jews, along with Gypsies, Poles, homosexuals and others that are “undesirable” people. The Nazis were a group of people who killed the Jews. Gas chambers, starvation, and more were used for their murders. Anne Frank’s diary is a notable document of the Holocaust. North America, Oceania, and Europe know well about the Holocaust. Although, there’s still people who deny this genocide.
The Holocaust was a mass murder of millions of individuals’ primary to and during World War II. “Only 54 percent of the people surveyed by the Anti- Defamation League (ADL) in a massive, global poll has ever heard of the Holocaust” (Wiener-Bronner). The Holocaust was from 1933-1945 and was run by German leader named Adolf Hitler. Hitler was a man who wanted to create his own race of people. Therefore to create this race, he wiped out anyone who did not have the specific descriptions that he wanted. For people to fit into his race, they had to have blue eyes and blond hair. This excluded the Jews and from then on Hitler slowly dehumanized them. In the concentration camp the first thing they had to pass was the selection test. The selection test was what the SS man (German soldiers) used to determine who was fit for work. Usually children, mothers, and elders were the first to die because they were not mentally fit for the work they were going to be given. People who passed the selection process either died of starvation, disease, fatigue, or assassination. It took twelve years before anyone intervened and by then it was too late for millions of people. Even though over twelve million people died during the Holocaust, genocides have still happened in Rwanda, Darfur and Cambodia.
Holocaust. A word of Greek origin that means sacrifice by fire. The Holocaust is a terrible event in our world’s history. During the course of the Holocaust six million men, women and children of the Jewish faith were murdered by Aolf Hitler and his Nazis in concentration and death camps across Europe. “Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.” Elie Wiesel----cite correctly with Ms. G. By remembering the victims of the Holocaust we are breaking the silence and honoring the lives that were taken too soon.
Not everybody believes in genocides, other may have a different opinion or thoughts. Sometimes people don’t realize its genocide because they believe in what they are doing and they think there is no harm done because it’s not affecting them. To be taken away from your family, to go live somewhere else or to be killed can have a huge impact on your life. Genocides play a huge role in the world; it has and will affect many people. In Darfur there is a genocide going on, it has been going on for a few decades now. Genocide is the mass killing of a race. The people of Darfur and the Government of Sudan didn’t really get along. The Government wanted to do oil exploration where the citizens lived. There was and still is a lot of tension between
On the 24 April 1915, as the Ottoman Empire was being dismantled, a fiercely nationalistic Muslim political party known as the Young Turks began the process of exterminating approximately 1 500 000 Armenian Christians. The Young Turks aimed to create a state that was free from any Armenians and from Christians in particular. The genocide lasted 8 years, until 1923, during which time the Armenian Christian population in the Ottoman Empire was reduced from approximately 2 million to approximately 500 000. Still today, Turkey refuses to call what took place ‘genocide’. The modern Turkish government argues that the intent was to relocate the Armenians or, in some cases, that the genocide was completely fabricated by the Armenians, as a bid to gain support from the outside Christian world.
The definition of a genocide correlates with the actions of the Turkish people to the Armenians because the acts violated human rights and the harmful actions taken towards the group were intentional. The Armenians have been abused for their offensive decisions made during World War I to the Turks and the Ottoman Empire. The Turks looked down on the Armenians for not being Muslim therefore Armenians were not permitted to hold government jobs and forced to pay higher taxes. Armenians did not find this fair and protested for basic human rights.
(armenian-genocide.org). It started when the Turkish government arrested hundreds Armenian intellectuals. They then executed them. They took the Armenian soldiers and removed their weapons and made them do labor, such as building roads and other things. This lead to the deaths of many people. If the men did not die in labor they were shot. The technology used to kill thousands of people were the telegraphs and the trains. “The telegraph system allowed for the kind of centralization that heretofore was impossible.” (armenian-genocide.org).It allowed people to send messages to kill people it was a government service so the Ottoman Empire had to order the massacres. After that happened the Turkish government would take people out of their homes and put them to death. The men were first, they were taken and shot, or other Armenians would be forced to walk out into the desert for days without food and water, until they died. If they did not keep walking they were shot. The deportations occurred from 1915-1916. They happened secretively and were disguised as resettlement programs. (armenian-genocide.org). People went without resistance because the the Armenian soldiers were killed earlier and they were the strongest and they fought for what they believed in. With them gone, others saw that they did not have a choice so they just went with little or no resistance. Nobody really know how many people were murdered and how many just died on the walk to their new home. The Ottoman government was not concerned about the Armenians eating while they were being deported. Lots of Armenians died of starvation because they were not fed and given water. This is one of the biggest ways the Ottoman government got rid of the Armenian population. The Turks did not take the young children. The young children were forced to convert to Muslim. They were also renamed and given Turkish names because the Turks wanted to keep the next
Darfur is the western region of the African country of Sudan. Currently, the people of Darfur have been continually attacked by the Sudanese army and by proxy-militia controlled by the Sudanese government. Families are being uprooted and starved, children tormented and murdered by the thousands and women raped without punishment. Innocent civilians in Darfur continue to be victims of unthinkable brutality. Many people have become homeless and seek protection in refugee camps in Chad. Yet despite its outward appearance, Darfur has a vast ethnic diversity and a complex, ancient system of resolving conflict. Genocide has occurred in several places around the world, but in Darfur there are certain reasons why it
In recent times, the media has highlighted the genocide that has been occurring in Darfur, Sudan. Darfur, Sudan is a country roughly the size of the state of Texas (Darfur Scores, n.d.). Genocide is the systematic killing of an entire ethnic group of people from a national, ethnic, or religious group, or an attempt to do away with them all (Darfur Scores, n.d.). Beginning around 2003, according to Darfur Scores (n.d.), “the Sudanese government in Khartoum and the government-sponsored Janjaweed militia have used rape, displacement, organized starvation, threats against aid workers and mass murder. Violence, disease, and displacement continue to kill thousands of innocent Darfurians every month.”
A holocaust is defined as a disaster that results with the tremendous loss of human life. History, however, generally identifies the Holocaust to be the series of events that occurred in the years before and during World War II. The Holocaust started in 1933 with the persecuting and
“The great massacres of 1894–1896, followed by others in 1909–1912, constituted a profound shock to the Armenian community, which was stripped of its land, ancestry, and culture” (“Armenian Genocide”).
The main goal of these reforms was to move the non-Muslims from an inferior national to a full subject of the Empire. The thought was that if the Sultan gave his minority subjects more rights, per say, than they would not form a separatist movement. Or worse the subjects separatist movement lobby international support; for example, in the Greek national movement in 1821. The Greeks were assisted by France, Romanov Russia, and The United Kingdom. In this way two causes for the Armenian genocide interweave. At the same time as nationalistic centrifugal forces are pulling the Empire apart, Europe is sticking their hands in Ottoman internal affairs. The Tanzimat Reforms were really a failure, and did not promote equal citizenship among citizens. Nor
The Holocaust was an ultimate abomination of Nazi racism that occurred between 1938 and 1945. The word Holocaust derived from the Greek word holokauston, which stands for a burnt sacrifice that is offered whole to God. The word was chosen for this occurrence because of the amount of dead bodies that were cremated in open fires by Nazis. The Holocaust was known for the mass murders of European Jews that took place during the Second World War. European Jews were the fundamental victims during the Holocaust and seemed to be the most targeted. In 1933, approximately nine million Jews lived in Europe and settle in 21 different countries. It eventually would be seized by Germany during the Second World War. By 1945, around five or six million European Jews had been brutally murdered. A majority of them died in concentration camps that were build primarily for Jews. However, Jews were not the only victims that were persecuted by Hitler’s and his Nazi regime. A half million Gypsies, mentally or physically disabled persons, and Soviet prisoners from war were also discriminated victims to Hitler’s Nazi genocide. Jehovah’s Witnesses and homosexuals were also persecuted in Europe.
Genocide in Germany Beginning in the early 1930's, officials in Germany saw that they could put the blame of their troubles onto the Jews. After the First World War, the German public was extremely angry with the government officials, especially because of the aftermath of the war. The German economy tumbled to a point that children could use blocks of German Marks as building blocks, French from right across the border could get pastries and other goods in Germany for less than an eighth the price of the same goods in France. Added onto that was the fact that Germany owed many war debts to the Allies.
When Atatürk founded the Republic of Turkey, his ideology was to westernize the country through changing the education and political systems. Even though the majority of the population of Turkey supported the Kemalist (Atatürkist) ideology today and his “modern world-view”, they never acknowledge some of the genocides that happened
