Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, was told from the point of view of Gustav von Aschenbach. The main theme of the novel was Aschenbach following around a little Italian boy, Tadzio. Tadzio reminds Aschenbach of himself when he was a child. Aschenbach and Tadzio were ill as children which is why Aschenbach becomes infatuated with Tadzio. Aschenbach was home schooled as a child because he was very ill and his parents decided that it was best for him to remain isolated from the other children. He came from a wealthy family which allowed him to live this lifestyle. The difference between the two is that although Tadzio is ill as a child he was still presented opportunities to play with other children and gain experiences. Part of the reason that Aschenbach as an adult has writers block is because as a child and as a young adult he didn’t have communication with the outside world. The remainder of this essay will be focused on the fact that if Aschenbach lived a normal life like Tadzio then the consequences of Aschenbach’s legacy wouldn’t have been tarnished . As Aschenbach’s character developed throughout the book, his appearance also changed which was caused by the behavior of Tadzio. Tadzio possess something that Aschenbach didn’t have when he was a child, a childhood. In the novel Aschenbach sees an Oldman that has changed his appearance in order to fit in with the younger crowd. For example, the Oldman dyed his hair. He is appalled by this but later on he actually changes his appearance to become closer to Tadzio. Aschenbach is trying to reunite with his youth. The obsession with the young boy, which shows itself as lust, is really his desire to be young again. By pursuing Tadzio dressed as a youthful figure, he thinks he can achieve this. Aschenbach’s outward transformation is completed with help from the hotel barber. Aschenbach dyes his hair black, applies cosmetics to his face, and arches his eyebrows. The result is a more youthful Aschenbach. If Aschenbach lived a normal childhood he wouldn’t have the desire as an adult to become a child once again and follow Tadzio. In reality, the change in his appearance made Aschenbach look like a clown which is how other people perceived him when he dies watching

Othello by William Shakespeare raises the issue of how rampant beliefs and attitudes in a society can cause a person to question their sense of self. In a society where racial equality is near non-existent, Othello, a black skinned foreigner in the Venetian society, is constantly reminded of his status as an outsider. Othello, however, is not depicted in a stereotypical manner and despite occupying a highly respected position he is often confronted with blatant racism throughout the play. The prevailing attitudes and beliefs of Venetian society towards Othello are exploited by Iago in order to manipulate Othello’s self confidence and emotional state.

‘Without setting, characters are simply there, in a vacuum, with no reason to act and most importantly, no reason to care.’ The setting gives place for a narrative to begin and evolve from, without a strong setting some texts may be difficult to interpret without extra contextual and historical knowledge of the time period of which it was written. Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Othello the Moor of Venice written 1603 was set in Italy, in the Venetian Republic . This setting was gaining popularity with Elizabethan writers, maybe as a form of escapism, to have a crypto - catholic approach, as this country was the largest and still is the largest Catholic country. Or a more general form of escapism from the society at that time. Writing for a predominantly working class audience, Shakespeare’s work is an escapism from the audiences hardship of life.

The idea of a comparative analysis essay is to strengthen ones understanding of a particular work by reading two different texts side by side. The purpose of reading two texts at the same time is to give the reader a better idea of what each story is implying. Having another text to compare each of the stories to make for a more clear analysis of them. After analyzing Gabriel Garcia’s Death Constant Beyond Love and Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis side by side it was evident that each story presented the feeling of solitude.

Of all the characters in Shakespeare’s works, none fall harder or faster than that of Othello, The Moor of Venice. Easily swayed and wrought by jealousy, Othello’s downfall is brought on by the fact that he doesn’t believe in himself. This uncertainty is the basis upon which unfolds one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. Through the in depth analysis of both Othello and Iago, I will serve to prove that Shakespeare was illustrating the fact that disaster is the only outcome of men lead by wild emotion and pride.
During his time on the poor family’s land, he reads Paradise Lost, a volume of Plutarch’s Lives, and the Sorrows of Werther. These books open his mind on human emotions, the ways of society, and God. After reading these books, he analyzes deeply about prejudice and the facts of his own existence and value. What does all this say about the human condition, not just in literature but for ordinary, everyday human beings? Do we have any control over the type of persons we become? Is there a fixed destiny in store for all of us? Some combination of the two? Before these larger questions can be addressed, it is necessary to begin with the texts before us. And in order to learn something about the significance of these moments of vulnerability and breakthrough for these heroes, it is important to establish the respective contexts from which they arise.
In the passages Ralph 124C 41+ and “Rappaccini`s Daughter”, the protagonists have analogous interests and goals, while the themes match as well. Both stories are of life, death, love, and nature. In this expressive writing, Rodriquez displays self-definitions throughout the essay.
