Between 1973 and 2017,157 innocent people were put on a death row before the crime was solved. Some criminals are not guilty, but they were put to death because the legal system failed to prove if the criminal was guilty or not. The United States is one of the five countries where the death penalty still exists. Criminals who got sentenced to death is placed in a single cell room waiting for their execution time to come. While they are waiting, they just locked up in the cell. By the time they get executed or proven not guilty, everything will be late. Either they will be too old to do anything in society and be successful or their reputation will be ruined and they cannot move on in their daily life because of the bad record. Many criminals who have to go through trials are poor and they cannot afford an attorney themselves. “The death sentence is disproportionately imposed, and carried out on the poor, the Negro, and the members of unpopular groups" (Furman v Georgia). Poor criminals have a higher chance of being convicted because they are uneducated about the law. Under the United States Constitution, poor criminal can ask for an attorney if they needed one, but the money will come from the state and taxpayers. “Death penalty costs North Carolina $2.16 million more per execution than a non-death penalty murder case with a sentence of life imprisonment" (Death Penalty Information Center). Instead of spending state and tax money trying to get criminals kill, the money can go toward something more important. In prison, the criminals can think about the crime they had committed and live with it until they die. That would be the worst punishment can be inflicted upon someone and it would save a lot of money. America is the only free, democratic country where death penalty exist. The system should be abolished because one wrong evidence can cause a life. Life term in prison may not be an ideal punishment for some criminal, but it the best solution and still constitutional. Some people may feel the death penalty is cruel and robbed the right to life also violate the Constitution. The oldest prison inmate was seventy-four years old before he was executed, but he lived thirty-six years in prison. He got the punishment he deserved and he had the right to life. Life term in prison may not be the ideal right to life any person would want, but it is the least any criminals on death row could ask to receive. A person who committed a crime should not be judged by their mistake and be buried with it
