Defending Planned Parenthood

Clinton stated “Politicians have no business interfering with women's personal health decisions. I will oppose efforts to roll back women's access to reproductive health care, including Republican efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. As president, I'll stand up for Planned Parenthood and women’s access to critical health services, including safe, legal abortion.” This really gave me a reaction because I agree with Hillary 100%. All woman should be able to make their own personal health decisions without feeling like they have to do something illegal.

Lastly, anaphora is a rhetorical device that emphasizes on major topics President Bush . As Bush said in paragraph eleven "Tonight, I ask for your prayers for all those who grieve, for the children whose worlds have been shattered, for all whose sense of safety and security has been threatened." This example of anaphora focuses on the people who have been affected by this tragedy. They need your prayers because their world has been shaken by evil. Bush uses the rhetorical device asyndeton with anaphora as well because it allows several points to be made continuously and flow well.

Planned Parenthood is a controversial topic sweeping the nation of America with political and moral issues. Every day one could come across a new article on it, stubble upon a news article in their local paper or even on their local news station. Planned Parenthood directly provides reproductive health services, is involved in teach young students about sexual education, contributes to research in reproductive technology, and interacts with legal and political efforts aimed at protecting and developing reproductive rights.

Planned Parenthood, is a nonprofit organization that provides reproductive health services in the U.S. Margaret Sanger founded the American Birth Control League in 1921, which changed its name to Planned Parenthood in 1942. Planned Parenthood has 56 locally governed affiliates nationwide and operates 650 health centers that conform to the communities where they are located. (Parenthood, Planned. "Who We Are.")

“Nothing matters.” That quote attributed to Ambrose Bierce may be true in some cases. It may be true to those who do not value the funding of Planned Parenthood. But something does matter. And that is the funding of the healthcare resource Planned Parenthood. Many do not understand the vital role Planned Parenthood plays in the lives of up and coming parents. Planned Parenthood has been operating and serving those in need of care in the United States and overseas for more than 40 years (“Planned Parenthood Global”). Planned Parenthood has vowed in their mission statement:

Millions of women across America will struggle to receive the medical attention they need if the federal government stops funding to Planned Parenthood. Every year 363 million dollars goes into the funding “pot” collectively at Planned Parenthood’s nationwide (Clark 5). This money is used predominantly by women; for six in ten women, Planned Parenthood acts as their main source of health care (Clark 4). Many individuals with low incomes depend on these clinics to maintain or help better their health. Recently, the federal government is trying to pass the Pence Amendment, which would eliminate funding to these institutions. The federal government needs to realize how important Planned Parenthood

The first argument for supporting Planned Parenthood is that it provides women with other health services and not just birth control or abortion. Without these services, women’s health will decline because many people can afford treatment. “Every year, Planned Parenthood’s doctors and nurses provide more than 3 million women with preventive health care, including nearly one million lifesaving screenings for cervical cancer, 830,000 breast exams, contraception to nearly 2.5 million patients and nearly four million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV. Literally, they are a trusted health care provider to millions of women (Whitman).” The statistic proves that Planned Parenthood does more than prevent unwanted pregnancy but also take on tasks care for women’s health.

Leaked videos from Planned Parenthood have caused frenzy among Americans and there have been debates on whether or not to continue funding this organization. These videos reveal Planned Parenthood officials discussing selling fetal tissue for profit. While they are proved to be edited videos, many people are still wary about the whole situation. Joining along with this frenzy is Ruth Marcus, whose article, Defunding Planned Parenthood would actually increase abortions, argues why Planned Parenthood should still be funded. Marcus provides substantial evidence including pathos and logos to support her claim; however, it is her ethos that is questionable. Nancy Pelosi, Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, states that “House Republicans are planning yet another taxpayer-funded Select Committee to burn more of the millions of taxpayer dollars they’ve already spent playing politics — this time with the goal of taking lifesaving preventative care away from millions of American women.” She stresses that the large amounts of money going into committees that are opposing PP is hurting American taxpayers, as well as American women. Controversy. Allegations. Contention. Dispute. Strife. Dissension. The current situation regarding the funding of Planned Parenthood has been a controversial topic that many people have chosen a solid stance on. With the allegations that have been made against Planned Parenthood, abortion has been the prime target of the scrutinizing eye. Many individuals and groups have made their decision to advocate for the defunding without looking at the true facts of what Planned Parenthood is really about. The government should not cut funding to Planned Parenthood because vast amounts of people would lose access to healthcare they need, and as a direct result of the defunding there would be less access to contraception.

A key argument that has been propagated by the opponents of Planned Parenthood’s continued funding and government support is that the money spent on it could be used on other community health facilities. The caseload and the large number of patients make it difficult for community health centers to provide the services efficiently. The situation in Texas presents a good case study for analysis of the effects. The state cut Planned Parenthood out of its family planning networks in 2013. They started excluding Planned Parenthood from its network of clinics where women from low-income communities got STI screening, contraception, and other reproductive health services (Muchmore 2015). The state has a significant focus on abortion restrictions and the decision to defund the Planned Parenthood federation. The other clinics available in the areas argued that they could take care of the workload if Planned Parenthood stopped and they would only have to increase their capacity.

Researching things to find for this assignment was difficult. After thinking about things, a big concern that has been as issue for southeast Iowa is the closing of planned parenthoods. After reading some different articles, the article that seemed to have some noticeable fallacies was, “Closing Of Planned Parenthood clinics a victory for Iowa women” in the Des Moines Register. Although this article is very controversial and effects the people of our community, it has many fallacies within it.

First Lady Michelle Obama has always been one known for her inspiring speeches and her commitment to women’s rights. In Manchester, New Hampshire, she is seen once again standing up for women and for this country by opening the public’s eyes to disrespect Donald Trump has shown for us. Throughout the entire speech the three rhetorical appeals of pathos, ethos, and logos, are all used effectively and powerfully to get her message across. She mainly targets the audience of empowered women but she also addresses the effect that voting for Donald Trump will have for men and women. Through the rhetorical appeals and the tone, she sets for her audience, Michelle Obama campaigns for the presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Admittedly, Hilary Clinton has spoken around the world about the challenges that women have faced. However, it is the continued struggle of American women that inspires and fuels her passion and fight for equality in this male-dominated culture. Also, while married to bill Clinton who was actively involved in women’s right, Hilary advocated for a standard of equality that embrace all colors and cultures. .
