Researching things to find for this assignment was difficult. After thinking about things, a big concern that has been as issue for southeast Iowa is the closing of planned parenthoods. After reading some different articles, the article that seemed to have some noticeable fallacies was, “Closing Of Planned Parenthood clinics a victory for Iowa women” in the Des Moines Register. This article was written by Maggie DeWitte, the executive director Iowans for Life . Although this article is very controversial and effects the people of our community, it has many fallacies within it. In the article, “Closing Of Planned Parenthood clinics a victory for Iowa women”, they start out telling which facilities will be closing and which ones will be staying open at this point in time. They explain the reason for closing some facilities; those reasons are because planned parenthood offers abortions. Maggie states some pros and cons about the facilities and the minimal research that people did around the community. Along with that is stated the resources that planned parenthood offers to people who need it. The article states the motto of planned parenthood and then …show more content…
In this article they mention the other cares that planned parenthood offers, but they focus on abortion. Abortion is an issue that is easily debated and whether a person agree or disagree on it, it is an emotional topic. When thinking about the baby or the mother, either way involves a life. The article references abortion and mainly talks about abortion throughout the whole article. They use those tactics to pull your heart strings and focus on that, so the other topics that are more important and relevant slip through the cracks. This is a fallacy because it uses emotions to make a person feel bad for not shutting down “the main cause of abortions”. Emotions are not the only type of a fallacy used in this article
The “Planned Parenthood Federation of America” is a non profit organization, funded by the Federal Government, in which it provides reproductive/maternal health services among the United States as well as internationally, since 1952. In recent news developments, there have been rumors that Planned Parenthood practices “inhumane” procedures when aborting an unborn baby to harvest their organs and that a law should be passed to stop this. The supporters for Planned Parenthood claim that these claims are unfounded and believe that Planned Parenthood is a wonderful association that helps women and men all around the world. This issue has caused a series of debates that have been going on for years, but Planned Parenthood still lives on.
First I will like to discuss the effect this decision made on an organization. It is important, because this organization is a large vehicle to the effort of birth control. Planned Parenthood, is an organization which offer its services to help family control pregnancies, counsels young woman on abortion, and it 's a lead voice in protection of the body of the female over the offspring. I will continue with Planned Parenthood expansion, while I explained the consequences of the precedent established by Griswold v. Connecticut in subsequent landmark cases.
Planned Parenthood is a controversial topic sweeping the nation of America with political and moral issues. Every day one could come across a new article on it, stubble upon a news article in their local paper or even on their local news station. Planned Parenthood directly provides reproductive health services, is involved in teach young students about sexual education, contributes to research in reproductive technology, and interacts with legal and political efforts aimed at protecting and developing reproductive rights.
Planned Parenthood is an organization that provides healthcare and education to both men and women, having over 650 health centers that provide healthcare to countless communities around the world. Shockingly, 78% of those who use Planned Parenthoods services live at or below 150% of the federal poverty line, showing how important this organization is to low-income families (Topulos, Greene, Drazen). Their mission statement is “A Reason for Being”, which is shown through their efforts to provide health care, advocate public policies, create educational programs, and endorse research. There are those who do not believe Planned Parenthood should be funded by the government, though, due to the fact that they provide abortions to women in need. Studies show that the effects of not having Planned Parenthood available are disastrous, causing low-income families to lack a healthcare provider and the number of those who are infected with STD’s and STI’s to rise. The biggest concern communities have about the government defunding Planned Parenthood is the effects that it would have on low-income families who would no longer have access to something that many people take for granted: health care. Although many believe that Planned Parenthood mostly provides abortions, in reality, only 3% of the people that seek help from them receive an abortion, while 97% receive affordable and, in many cases,
“Nothing matters.” That quote attributed to Ambrose Bierce may be true in some cases. It may be true to those who do not value the funding of Planned Parenthood. But something does matter. And that is the funding of the healthcare resource Planned Parenthood. Many do not understand the vital role Planned Parenthood plays in the lives of up and coming parents. Planned Parenthood has been operating and serving those in need of care in the United States and overseas for more than 40 years (“Planned Parenthood Global”). Planned Parenthood has vowed in their mission statement:
Planned parenthood has been a topic of controversy the last couple of years, as people throughout the nation ask whether or not the healthcare organization should be defunded. When video footage was released in 2015 of “Planned Parenthood medical officials discussing the sale of fetal tissue to researchers,” it seemed likely that federal funds would be revoked as backlash from the public was noted (Welch). Although the nonprofit organization does offer the termination of unplanned pregnancies, the organization offers many more services to women and men, such as free birth control and yearly health checkups “backed by medical experts and more than 100 years of research in reproductive health” (Planned Parenthood). As many people struggle financially to provide for their families, Planned Parenthood’s services are a relief to those who otherwise would not be able to afford healthcare, which is why the organization should not be defunded.
Since many believe that Planned Parenthood only performs abortions, a frenzy against it has been created. “We don’t want to commit taxpayer funding for abortions, and Planned Parenthood is the largest abortion provider” (Strickland quoting Paul Ryan, 2017). Republicans rather see federal funding go towards federal community centers. However, to clarify this misconception we need to look at what federal funding is going towards. Planned Parenthood receives its funding from Medicaid reimbursements (Berg, 2017). They do not keep any hidden money, or have money put aside to preform free abortions. As the federal money that comes in goes straight towards helping patients.
Millions of women across America will struggle to receive the medical attention they need if the federal government stops funding to Planned Parenthood. Every year 363 million dollars goes into the funding “pot” collectively at Planned Parenthood’s nationwide (Clark 5). This money is used predominantly by women; for six in ten women, Planned Parenthood acts as their main source of health care (Clark 4). Many individuals with low incomes depend on these clinics to maintain or help better their health. Recently, the federal government is trying to pass the Pence Amendment, which would eliminate funding to these institutions. The federal government needs to realize how important Planned Parenthood
Given the misinformation depicted in the media it is difficult to discern what Planned Parenthood does and exactly how it is that they allocate their funds. Though opponents of Planned Parenthood would have us believe abortions and contraception is what they do, health screenings and prevention is a more accurate description. More so given the array of services they offered and the fact that those they serve are mainly from the uninsured and underrepresented minority population. Though steeped in controversy, Planned Parenthood services are of great benefit to society, more so given their efforts in preventive care. Because
In 1916, Margaret Sanger founded the first birth control clinic, laying the foundation for Planned Parenthood to come into existence. Twenty years later, in a U.S v. One Package ruling, The U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals states that in order to promote well-being and save lives, physicians may prescribe contraceptives. Throughout the state of Iowa, education efforts prominently began with contraceptive lectures in 1938. The health center in Des Moines starts offering abortion services after Roe v. Wade ruled that women have right to an abortion. Around 1988, Iowa mandates sex education in public schools, with Planned Parenthood having an influential say in the matter (Our History). Throughout its history, Planned Parenthood has helped and saved countless lives and may continue to do so if it receives the funding it needs to operate. The government should use taxpayer money to fund Planned Parenthood.
“Women across the country were routinely dying in emergency rooms after being subject to abortions. I fear we are now coming full circle” (Morris). Here the point is raised that women who are refused abortions may go to extreme, illegal lengths to get them and endanger themselves. Shutting down planned Parenthood will not stop women will not stop women from getting abortions, it will just make them more dangerous (Morris). Planned Parenthood provides more than 4.2 million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including more than 650,000 HIV tests (Parenthood). Keeping these clinics funded it will provide these services at a reasonable cost to all people. They also provide cancer screenings and other preventative health care that has proven to save lives.
Numerous Americans, including some who are pro-choice regarding abortion, do not want their tax money used through Planned Parenthood for abortion. Staunchly religious people against abortion, claiming that it insults God to “kill unborn children,” are also against Planned Parenthood for giving out the service of abortion (DailySignal). Moreover, the selling of fetal parts by PP has become a big issue that is increasing the support for defunding PP.
According to the article, “Political Attacks on Planned Parenthood Are a Threat to Women 's Health” for some people, Planned Parenthood has come to symbolize abortion, which it has provided since 1970. But in all the rhetoric, facts have sometimes gone missing. For example, Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona declared on the floor of the Senate that abortion accounts for "well over 90 percent" of what Planned Parenthood does. That figure is actually 3 percent. Planned Parenthood clinics perform one in four abortions in the U.S. but use no federal funds for this practice. To some abortion opponents, that 3 percent is reason enough to gut the organization. If a future Congress and White House were to do so, however, it would drive women once again into the back alleys, without necessarily decreasing the number of abortions. Stripping Planned Parenthood of federal funding would also sacrifice the 97 percent of its public health work that has nothing to do with abortion, from which many people benefit directly. One in five American women have used the group 's services, and three out of four
Unlike NFPRHA, they don’t focus so much on families but the community. They cover general health care, mens sexual health, sexual orientation and gender. Planned Parenthood provides general health care services by location. Some locations offer anemia testing, chloestrol screening, diabetes screening, physical exams for employment and sports, thyroid screening, flu vaccinations, help quitting with smoking, tetanus vaccinations and high blood pressure screening. I think it’s really important that Planned Parenthood state that on their website. A lot of people, myself including, believe they only provide specific services for women. Unfortnatuely, Planned Parenthood has the stereotype that they only provide abortions. Lately, Planned Parenthood has received negative media attention regarding the disposal of fetal tissue after a performed abortion. What I believe many people don’t realize is that Planned Parenthood provides so many more services than just abortion. In particular, I enjoy that they discusse body image and provide counseling at various locations. Today’s media produces images of what they believe is an ideal body type. Planned Parenthood encourages women to have body confidence. This organization discusses the effects of having a negative body image can do. Having a negative outlook can affect a ladies mental health. Planned Parenthood lists the negative
The intended audience would not be persuaded by this article. There is some facts and references, but none of which are cited. Also, many people have a very strong opinion on this matter and this article is not convincing enough to change someone’s mind. In some cases it may even make people even more mad about the topic. I disagree with the author’s argument. Many people need planned parenthood, not just for abortions, but for many other health related things. Without these contraception services there will be many more children in adoption centers and homeless. Some people are just not ready to have children and it will be even more possible for accidents to happen if methods to prevent it become much more expensive. I do not think Planned
