Defining Professionalism

Webster’s describes professionalism as “the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person.” I can see why people would say that about professionalism. However, I personally don’t fully understand the true meaning of professionalism. That might be because professionalism wasn’t an important part in my life. But now that I’m beginning to grow and learn more about my career and my future, professionalism is something that I’m going to have to work on in order to gain the skills to be respected in the business world.

Being professional should be a subconscious effort in the fact that it should always be applied. When employees are professional it helps the system run more efficiently and safely. I have learned what professionalism is from many great people since I was very young to the present. I believe that being a professional student is doing all of the general things like study, be on time to class, doing my work and all of the typical student responsibilities. Most importantly professionalism as a student is to really gather all of the knowledge necessary to be able to do what youre pursuing to the best of your ability. Professionalism is acting in a way that respects you and your colleagues in the workplace. Being a student, my colleagues are my fellow classmates, as well as the teachers and doctors of the school. There are many adjectives that describe how to be professional, but the few that I consider the most important are dependable, respectful, and committed.

A professional is someone who has devoted a substantial amount of time to the development of the skills and qualities—academically and personally—specific to his or her field of interest. One of those many qualities is professionalism. However, unlike the title “professional,” professionalism cannot be grasped at some single point in time. Imagine landing the job you have always aspired to have. How will you excel and go from an introductory position with hopes of working your way up the ranks? Professionalism! Although there is no one definition of professionalism, it can be summarized as the level of excellence that is expected of individuals as well as rational work behaviour. In my opinion, professionalism is vital in the workplace, most importantly noted by; management of workplace relations, personal presentation and open communication.

The definition of professionalism is “the competence or skill expected of a professional”. When I put this into my own words, I say that professionalism is the ability and know-how to act in a professional setting. These professional settings could range from the interactions of employees in an office to how to act at a company dinner party. Nevertheless, people should want to be perceived and to act in a professional manner in order to gain respect and to move upwards in their careers. Looking introspectively, I see myself as a knowledgable, but inexperienced professional. That is, I think I understand what it takes to be a well rounded and successful professional, but haven’t had much opportunity to exercise this professionalism. Professionalism is something that is practiced on a daily basis by people in many different careers. Atsede Fantahun (2014) said, “professionalism is defined as the conceptualization of obligations, attributes, interactions, attitudes, and role behaviors required of professionals in relationship to individual clients and to society as a whole” (p. 2). Professionalism is important when it comes to working at any job throughout your lifetime. After attending the college kick-off event on Wednesday, January 25, I learned more of what professionalism is in a health care profession. To me, professionalism means being the best employee that you can be. Being honest, responsible, and available are all examples of being an employee with professionalism.
