Professionalism: A Career In Physical Therapy

Professionalism is not really something that is expected from a student but I really started thinking it about it once I came along to this question and I asked myself, “why not?”. I believe professionalism can be applied anywhere in life no matter whether you are a student, a physical therapist, a brick layer, or a part-time worker. Being a professional does not mean being great at what you do but also having great attitude towards your job and being efficient and precise whether it is a small job or the most important project of your life. In my case, I can say I learned what professionalism was a very young age from my father. My father has worked in construction and as a brick layer for 33 years. In physical therapy, there are many different aspects of the job that require a lot of attention and time. In my time observing at Memorial Hermann I had the privilege to shadow a lot of experienced therapists that were great at their job but there was one patient that stood out to me. She had a major injury in her spinal cord that disabled her from walking and using her hands. She was very young and was very active before her accident so you could tell she was very discouraged. The therapists would always be so positive and never let her spirits get down at any time. While I was there she showed a lot of progress with the help of amazing therapists, she started using her hands a lot better and started to be able to stand on her own. I was really amazed by the work of the patient and the therapists of how fast her recovery was taking place. The therapists always made sure to keep her goals first and always make sure she was safe at all times. The efficiency of the therapy really stood out to me because when I first met her she was barely able to move and when I left she started taking her first steps all over again. Professionalism in physical therapy really requires efficiency and hard work to achieve the patient’s goals and get them to where they want to be. I have learned what professionalism is from many great people since I was very young to the present. I believe that being a professional student is doing all of the general things like study, be on time to class, doing my work and all of the typical student responsibilities. Most importantly professionalism as a student is to really gather all of the knowledge necessary to be able to do what youre pursuing to the best of your ability. Getting straight A’s and being a top student is what everyone aspires to be but I believe that being a professional student is also being able to take the knowledge and experience he or she gained and apply it to their line of work. I am pursuing to be a professional physical therapist and in order to do that I have to be a professional student where I will learn and sharpen my skills to become what I have always pursued to be and that’s being a physical
