How does one define the word “love”, and what exactly is it? Is it merely a fleeting feeling, or is it something more spiritual in nature? Perhaps it has several different meanings, depending on one’s own personal perception and experiences. My own perception is that “love” in itself is an essence that almost all life on Earth harbors, and it is also something that all life has the capability of expressing. Although, the above statement may be too much of an optimistic statement, for the reason that there are individuals in this world who seem completely devoid of love, empathy, and compassion. Completely devoid of what makes a human – human. Despite this very fact, and despite the many harsh cruelties of humanity and society; goodness, love, and light will always prevail and cast out any darkness, violence, and hate. This leads me to believe that love is a pivotal element for the good in humanity, and that “love” in itself is more than meets the eye.

Many people believe that romantic love is an integral part of life, and spend decades looking for it. This type of love has become just another thing to achieve in order to “level-up.” Love, in general, is not something that we can put on a to-do list. Love might come with long black hair and blue eyes, making you swallow your bravery and your words as your heart beats a little faster. Love might be the person you grew up with, or the person that chooses to cross the road just as you start to drive across. Love could be holding a pizza and saying “your total is 24.95”. Love could be staring at a smartphone, oblivious as your nose finds the smells of the world while theirs is buried in their phone and they can’t detach themselves from the media.

Happy, sad, thankful, interested, lucky, frustrated, cheerful, pleased, comfortable, confident, and infatuated are all feelings. Coming and going, feelings are temporary and conditional. Supposedly, love is unconditional, so it’s not a feeling. Love is a lifelong commitment, like a virus.

The definition of love can be varied from person to person and from culture to culture. When a woman is in love, it can be seen in her eyes. Women are usually mesmerized by what their loved one is doing. An action as simple as driving can be mesmerizing to a woman. When men are in love, they touch their woman in public. The men make sure their partner feels love by holding their hand or hugging them. Love can be defined as putting someone else’s feelings before their own. It means that there isn’t another care in the world except for that  person. For example, the man tends to worry about their partner in the littlest circumstances; even when the other person just has a tiny cold.

It is also a term that I think is used in an improper context more than it is used in the correct context.

Does the soul strive for love or is it simply human lust that drives us to find a partner? As a kid, I watched my parents go through multiple marriages. This left me with a simple curiosity to what true love is. Marriage is supposed to be internal love that last forever. Yet, people always say 50 percent of marriages end in divorce or what not. I began to think love was only a fantasy shown only through cinema and expressive art. As you would guess, I simply had to find a compatible female whom I saw love as a possibility.

Love is also defined in the dictionary as "strong affection," "warm attachment," and "unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for others" (439). All of these definitions are completely correct, but the dictionary does not explain how it feels to love someone. The reason that an explanation for this feeling is not found in the dictionary may be because love is so different for each individual person. In my experience, "strong affection" does not even begin to cover the sensation and emotions a person feels when he or she is in love. Love is compared to "the extraordinary sun / splashing its light / into astonished trees" in Denise Levertov's "Love Poem" (2-4). Like the sun, love is great and bright and fills a person with extreme joy. Love is greater than anything else a person could ever experience.
