Happiness is temporary, while having a meaningful life is long-lasting. The pursuit of happiness started in 1843 when people started to look for it. “Sometimes the things individuals are most afraid of are the things that make individuals the happiest” (DandelionQuotes.com). Happiness can be complicated because people often expect a lot from it, but the people and cultures that value improvement, giving to others, and building relationships are the happiest.

People's expectations of happiness are too high or impossible to reach or it fades away. Emily Smith said “while happiness is an emotion felt in the here and now, it ultimately fades away, like all emotions do.” Meaning the people who reach the highest point of happiness begin to get tired/annoyed with it and start to perceive happiness. Vohs says “people who live a meaningful life get a lot of joy from giving to others.”For instance the people who give a part of themselves to other people receive a numerous amount of happiness than those who don’t want to deal with any amount of pressure or stress. Another good example of a selfless act or a relationship builder would be Denmark because they give free schooling up to college, free health care, and co-housing which their citizens who have problems. Denmark is one country that works on the growth of the citizens’ happiness instead of their economic growth which makes them different than Japan.
