I found a Dictionary definition for civility at Merriam- Webster stating civility means polite, reasonable, and respectful behavior. How I think of civility means the same as Merriam-Webster but it’s also much more than being polite, reasonable, and respectful behavior it’s understanding people’s feelings showing them respect and understanding listening to someone that’s having bad day just to be there for them. Some rules I live by are in our household we are say positive and nice things to each other if something negative come from someone adult or child we do have punishment. There are many purposes of politeness including: creating a public self image, creating solidarity, threatening people to send a negative message, not threatening people or upsetting them, indicating social relationship, showing awareness of social context, and power dynamics. Civility is manners. Doing simple behaviors like not chewing with one’s mouth open while eating or holding doors open for others can be considered as simple acts of civility. In the two essays “What is Civility?” by P.M. Forni and “Play with Your Food, Just Don’t Text” by Sara Rimer, they discuss civility. In Forni’s essay, he discusses civility from a teacher’s stand point, and Rimer focuses on technology and how it leads to a lack of civility in a lot of homes worldwide. Although they have two different stand points, they both focus on the similar aspect of civility being significant. He starts off by giving reasons why people are lacking manners in everyday life. He also gives definitions of the words manner, manners, moral, and customs and then goes further to discuss the true meaning of these words. He also relates his life experiences and his personal beliefs to the topic at hand.

In society today it is common for someone to be respectful to their elders or told to do so, but when we are respectful to our peers and those younger or “below” us it shows great character. According to The Positivity Solution, an organization dedicated to spread positivity, dignity, and kindness, “Rudeness is often a by-product of a lack of respect. Not to sound like Captain Obvious here, but most people don’t choose to be rude and disrespectful to people who they respect, do they?”. What they are trying to convey is that people often don’t give everyone the respect they deserve. When we do not give people respect, we lose respect for ourselves and become rude in other people’s eyes. As we learn to realize that everyone deserves respect, we can see that even the most small things can earn our attention. If you are consciously deciding to give people respect or not, that is a mistake. Why do people need your acceptance to be treated equally? They do not. And if you are making a choice based on shallow judgment, you are destroying the love and kindness that others have shown to you. To be critical like that is unacceptable and wrong universally.
When coming across people who have total different opinions from mine, I always act respectfully. For example, at school, we have to do many team projects; most often, team members may come from total different cultural background, and thus always have different opinions about the same thing.
