Dehumanization Of Animals In Beloved

Decent Essays

In Beloved, by Toni Morrison, characters are often compared to animals, while animals are often associated with specific characters. Through these repeated comparisons, Morrison eludes to the characteristics that were often associated with black people, while Beloved signals a coming back of the past. Through the novel, Morrison shows that despite Sethe and Paul D. trying to run away from their past in Sweet Home and the animalistic qualities associated with black people, more specifically Sethe and Paul D., their past is inescapable.

as well as he journeys to the North. Through the comparison of Paul D. to animals, Morrison is trying to emphasize that the words and perceptions of black people are negative, while also conveying that there is an inherent animal survival of sorts within someone. This can be seen with Paul D. as he is trying to survive. “He who had eaten raw meat barely dead, who under plum trees bursting with blossoms had crunched through a dove’s breast before its heart stopped beating” (148). This inclusion of the clear reference to animal or carnivorous behavior shows that while Sethe and Paul D. try to remove the associations to animals that Schoolteacher imposes on them, they are unable to get rid of the words that essentially become them. “Eaten raw meat barely dead” shows the carnivorous and predatory nature that most White people associated with Sethe, while “plum trees bursting with blossoms” provides an almost ironic take as Paul D. is eating a dead dove, while the plum tree is alive. As seen in the quote, as Paul D. becomes more desperate the inner “animal” seems to show leading to the further perception that Paul D. is becoming the stereotype that the White people placed on him. This inability to renounce the words is evident as similarly with Sethe, when the Sweet Home men come to the North to find Sethe, they associate “mewing” with Paul D. lowering him in their eyes as well as perpetuating the thought that Paul D. is indeed lower and reducing him to the animalistic qualities.
