Difference Between Alzheimer's vs Dementia: Everything You Should Know Overview Alzheimer’s and dementia are quite often thought to be the same condition. However, they are biologically different. Alzheimer’s is a disease and dementia is a set of symptoms, under which Alzheimer’s can fall. Some of the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia are shared, such as a decline in the ability to process thoughts as well as memory and communication impairment. Dementia can be part of Alzheimer’s’ and Alzheimer’s is the largest contributor to dementia, but they are not the same condition. Dementia is a syndrome, not a disease, unlike Alzheimer’s. It occurs when certain brain cells are damaged by various infections, diseases or imbalances. This damage interferes with the ability of brain cells to communicate with each other. When brain cells cannot communicate normally, thinking, behavior and feelings can be affected. Different brain cells are affected by different types of dementia. When cells in a particular region are affected, that area of brain function is affected. Multiple symptoms contribute to dementia and dementia can affect mental cognitive tasks such as memory, reasoning, social functioning thinking and daily living. It is possible to have more than one form of dementia at a time and this known as mixed dementia. Over time, dementia progresses and when loss of reasoning, memory, and thinking become severe, this can have a significant impact on independent functioning. Some conditions that can cause dementia include degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s as well as other infections, illnesses, and imbalances.
