Dental Hygiene When most people think of good health they think of doctors, however dental health can be just as important. Regular dental care can help prevent numerous other illnesses. Dental hygienists are the professionals who teach and aid in taking care of all of your oral hygiene needs. “Dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care. (“Summary Dental Hygienists”)” Dental hygiene goes way back to the times of the Ancient Egyptians. The educational requirements to become a dental hygienist are short. The minimum education to become a dental hygienist is an associate’s degree. The history of dental hygiene started back many years during the Sumerian times. “The earliest known writing about tooth disease was an ancient Sumerian text that dates to about 5,000 B.C. accusing “tooth worms” of burrowing into teeth thus forming characteristic holes of tooth decay, a superstition that persisted through the Middle Ages in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.” (Byers 1) Years later, the ancient Egyptians increased their knowledge on dental care. “The Ancient Egyptians were some of the first people to develop specialized dental care techniques.” (Libal 48) “Many dental procedures have existed for thousands of years… Some practices go back to the Egyptian empire of 2,000 B.C.” (Byers 2) The Chinese people were some of the first people to take care of their teeth at home with
