The Dental Lifeline Network provides oral care for people with limited financial income. DLN strives to change lives of countless people who lack access to dental care. The mission of the project I was working on is to find new ways to recruit new patients and volunteers. During my internship, I was focusing on Rhode Island, Texas, Illinois, and Iowa. I start researching and helping the DOS find the best ways to recruit new patient. For Rhode Island, I start researching and finding school nurses and agencies that works with youth or low income families and created spreadsheet to keep track of their contact information. I also created flyers and emailed the 30 school nurses and 8 agencies. Since the Rhode Island DOS program has a number of volunteer dentists waiting for a DOS patient, I emailed 21 dentists to remind them about the DOS program and ask if they can refer patients that will be eligible for the DOS program. For Texas, I was focusing on recruiting applicants, I start putting together a list of agencies and school nurses. I emailed Dr. Wise the list of agencies and school nurses and he suggested I’d focus on the head nurse in each district instead of the individual school nurses, because he said that those names will be meaningful. He also mentioned that Texas, the nurses are required …show more content…
I did the same think as Rhode Island and Texas, I research and find 18 school nurses and 12 agencies contact and I emailed them DOS letter. Also, I emailed the letter to the pediatric dentist because they are trained to handle problems particular to children and they can refer more kids to the DOS program. I saved all the documents under the DOS Illinois folder. For Iowa, I emailed 12 schools and 15 agencies about the DOS program. I created a spreadsheet to track the agencies that I contacted so the DOS Coordinator can follow up with the agencies after I

As a recipient of this scholarship, I would like to contribute to the mission of the NHSC by providing an environment where patients feel that they are welcomed, a priority, and receiving high quality healthcare. This is important because the large patient demands found in clinics in underserved areas create an environment where patients receive less face-to-face time with their doctors, provided they get seen at all. Because I have the work ethic and compassion to make a difference in underserved areas, I believe that I would be a helpful addition to any clinic. Bringing caring healthcare professionals into communities will allow more patients to receive quality care as well as impact these areas by allowing everyone to live healthier, more

To start, I have always had an interest in the health field and knew it was where I saw my future. I came across dental hygiene and quickly became fascinated. I learned just how important it can be and how many tend to overlook it. Given the opportunity, I would like to make sure my patients understand the importance of dental hygiene and share my knowledge. I feel because I have been given an opportunity that others weren’t so fortunate to receive; it is my responsibility to give back. I come from a small community in Northern New Mexico in which I plan to return and offer my knowledge and skills. I also have plans of doing missionary work for those who are unable to afford dental care. To be accepted into the prestigious Division of Dental
It wasn’t until participating in the Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) that I became interested in dentistry. It all started when my best friend convinced me to join American Student Dental Alliance (ASDA) with her. Initially I was hesitant, but I wanted to try to open up and experiment with careers in college. Although I was a member, I was not as active in the organization at first. However, this all changed when I decided to attend the most promoted event of the year, TMOM. TMOM is an annual event that provides free dental care to low income residents in Texas. I observed and assisted dentists and dental students for the first time. One lady, in particular, was physically abused by her husband, and she had many missing front teeth. The dentist was able to repair her smile and give her the smile she deserved. It was an incredible experience being able to witness the transformation of a person’s confidence. TMOM was the turning point of my life because the people I encountered inspired me to pursue dentistry as a career.

Oral health care is an integral part of the US healthcare system. In 2012, Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced “The Comprehensive Dental Reform Act”, which aimed on expanding dental coverage, accessible oral health care centers, increase in dental workforce, enhanced dental education and encourage dental research. (Congress.gov). The ACA, aim to curb the national health spending, by facilitating the affordability to quality care through private and public health insurance. The purpose of this bill is to cut the healthcare costs and to reverse the “silent epidemic” of dental health status (surgeon gen). This dental bill with an integrated approach towards the preventive and comprehensive oral healthcare is estimated to provide coverage to almost 17.7 million adults. (ADA

Serving an underserved population has always been my motivation to become a dentist. Throughout my life I have excelled in crafts and am exceptionally talented with my hands. As a result, it has continually been my dream to be in a profession where I could use my hands to change a person’s life by easing their pain or helping them smile again. Being given the opportunity to finally achieve this would be invaluable. I truly want to make a positive difference in this world. This desire has provided me the grit to overcome adversity and withstand the challenges I have faced while applying to dental school. Since helping people is something that I am extremely passionate about, I have had numerous wonderful volunteer experiences throughout the
This year, the topic for our dental capstone project is to solve a problem in the dental field through informing the community. We figured that most people aren’t completely aware of the different specialties of dentistry. It is common to visit the general dentist every 6 months for teeth cleaning, but many people don’t know about oral and maxillofacial surgeons, or pedodontists, etc. Our purpose for this capstone project is to educate the public on the differences between the several dental specialties. By creating 3-Dimensional models of each dental office, we are able to demonstrate the uniqueness and purpose of each specialty.
Regardless of your political stance, dental care is a service that all people should have access to, privately, or publicly. In the United States alone, millions of Native Americans on reservations are stifled from receiving the much needed dental care they require, the consequences are harmful to their health and prosperity.
