Mental illness is a growing concept in today’s world. It is just now being recognized as a common problem amongst people as young as twelve years old. The most common mental illnesses that are discussed are anxiety and depression. Sometimes, these illnesses are caused by a traumatic event that triggers the host throughout their lifetime. However, anxiety or depression can be genetic or a person might just be born with a chemical imbalance that prevents them from being truly calm and happy. Anxiety and depression are the top mental illnesses that commonly affect men and women’s lives. This also is called social phobia. Its victims have a marked fear of social or performance situations in which they expect to feel embarrassed, judged, or rejected. They also have a fear of offending those around them. People with this disorder may have a hard time with stage fright and socializing with others. They have a constant fear that they will be disliked and only wish for people to like them and nothing else. The symptoms for social anxiety disorder comprise of feeling extremely anxious about being with other people and having a hard time talking to them. They also feel very self-conscious in front of other people and are worried about being humiliated or embarrassed. They are scared of the fact that other people will judge them and they will sit on this thought for days or weeks before they attend something where they know others will be there, too. It is described as a condition in which a person feels discouraged, sad, hopeless, unmotivated, or disinterested in life in general. These feelings can last for more than two weeks and they interfere with daily activities such as family duties, social experiences, or simply just going to school or work. It is one of the most common disorders in the United States. The main depressive symptoms include a constant sad, anxious or empty mood. It also includes feelings of hopelessness, pessimism, guilt, worthlessness, and helplessness. One may also feel a loss of interest or indulgence in hobbies and activities, including sex. Decreased energy and tiredness are also symptoms. They might also experience difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions. Other symptoms include insomnia or oversleeping. They might either have no appetite and lose lots of weight or just the opposite and have weight gain with overeating. Contemplations of death or suicide are very common along with restlessness and irritability. And lastly, obstinate physical symptoms that do not go away with treatment such as headaches, digestive disorders and pain are also symptoms of depression. This disorder is treatable but requires lots of work by the person with the disorder more so than the doctor treating them. As humans, we suffer mild anxiety once awhile when we encounter a stressor and that does not require any attention but it becomes a problem when it turns chronic.
Presenting Problem: Jasmine is 15y/ o African American female with a past psychiatric history of depression and anxiety, who is currently admitted to Dominion Hospital due to safety concerns with a specific plan to overdose and hang herself. Pt states she has been depressed since eighth grade, on Labor Day 2015 she began engaging in self-injurious behaviors specifically cutting on the arms, legs, hip, knee and even stomach which led to partial hospitalization stay at Kellar Institute for 3 weeks. She states that self-injurious behaviors were also difficult to overcome and she had voiced places to kill herself.

There are some people who have stage fright. They are afraid of a specific situation, such as speaking in public. They are afraid of being judged, watched, and criticized by others. These people may be suffering from Social Anxiety Disorder which is also called Social Phobia. Social Anxiety disorder is a devitalizing disorder that is known by a fear of social or performance situations including the possibility of being scrutinized (Furmark 2002,p 84; Schneier 2006, p 1030). Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger or a difficult situation. It is the automatic alarm that goes off when someone is under pressure. (Smith, 2016) Some could describe anxiety as a persistent, uncontrollable, and overwhelming feeling that prevents them from their daily activities. Most people don’t know what to do once they develop anxiety. No one preps you before hand. It just collides with you, one day you had never experienced it, the next day, you have. This leaves you unprepared in the area of managing it. While I am not a professional psychiatrist, I will be giving you advice on how to manage your anxiety, using mostly my own experience with it. In layman's terms, depression is caring too little, while anxiety is caring too much. The actual definition of depression is, “A lack of interest and pleasure in daily activities, significant weight loss or gain, insomnia or excessive sleeping, lack of energy, inability to concentrate, feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide” (Depression). While someone with anxiety has, “Recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns, sometimes causing them to avoid certain situations, and they may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness or a rapid heartbeat” (Anxiety). Depression and anxiety get lumped together all the time, so nobody really knows the differences between them, what they really are, and how treatment is extremely different.
Since i was a young girl i have always dealt with anxiety. Anxiety is tough to talk about because it’s different for everyone. Anxiety is a general term for several disorders that cause nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worrying. These disorders affect how we feel and behave, and they can manifest real physical symptoms.
