About 40 million American adults suffer from some sort of anxiety disorder. Many Americans have to deal with it everyday. Anxiety is one of the most common mental/emotional disorders. Although many Americans have some type of anxiety disorder, the way it affects someone is different for every person. Most people are unaware of what anxiety actually is and how much it could affect someone. Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger or a difficult situation. It is the automatic alarm that goes off when someone is under pressure. (Smith, 2016) Some could describe anxiety as a persistent, uncontrollable, and overwhelming feeling that prevents them from their daily activities. There are about five most common types of anxiety. Generalized anxiety disorder, known as GAD, is the constant worries that distract from day-to-day activities. That includes work, school, or just being in public and doing things like shopping. The symptoms of GAD show up more physically rather than mentally. Some people with generalized anxiety disorders are called chronic worrywarts. Those people feel anxious all the time and are always worrying about everything. (Smith, 2016)
Another common type of anxiety disorders are panic disorders. Panic disorders are described as repeated and unexpected panic attacks. Sometimes panic disorders may be accompanied by agoraphobia, which is the fear of being in places where escape or help would be difficult in event of an attack. Social anxiety is the fear of being seen negatively by others. Those people with social anxiety fear being humiliated in public. Some people think of social anxiety as extreme shyness. This is because those people tend to avoid social situations and try to talk to as few people as possible. People with social anxiety get really scared and nervous at the thought of having to give a presentation in front of the whole class.
