Two years ago, I went to Puerto Rico and I absolutely loved it! Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island and a U.S territory. It is east from the Dominical republic. The capital is called San Juan with 77 other cities! Puerto Rico has about 3.548 million people living there. Since Puerto Rico is an island the weather there is one of the most unvarying climates in the world. All year around, the temperature is usually from 75 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit. In fact, the island is the hottest and wettest around August, averaging about 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Puerto Rico offers many cultural entertainment, historical locations and tourist attractions. In Puerto Rico their cultural entertainments are holidays, architecture and arts&crafts. There are many holidays in Puerto Rico a few of them are New Year's day, Three Kings Day, Christmas and more. According to touertorico.org, the architecture heritages are from the Spanish. Narrow winding cobblestone street and light colored tile-roofed building with balconies. Old San Juan has about 400 structures of history! As for arts&crafts, Puerto Ricans are usually artistic whether the artists are trained in an art school or self-taught. Places to go see beautiful paintings are art galleries and the museum of the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras. The craft …show more content…
The newcomers called the island San Juan Bautista for St. John the Baptist. Later on, the two names were switched. A lieutenant to Columbus Juan Ponce de Leon, the city of Puerto Rico became an important military outpost in the Caribbean. In 1506, the founder of the new world, Christopher Columbus died. Therefore, in the future people built forts to protect the citizens from the Pirates. Nevertheless, it was mostly used to protect everyone inside. If it wasn't from Pirates it was protection from other sea born
You can eat at American restaurants in both places. As well as eating Spanish food. Puerto Ricans are born citizens of the United States. There are no green cards or visas required. In P.R., you can drink and gamble at the age of eighteen. Sales tax is seven percent and they do not pay federal income tax.
Puerto Rico has variety of Spanish food that make you go there. Puerto Rico’s food is one of the best reasons to visit the island. It is diverse, rich, and flavorful with a combination of rice, beans, meat and fish fried. Puerto Rico cooking is somewhat similar to both Spanish and other Hispanic cuisines. It’s
Puerto Rico, whose word meaning is “rich port” in Spanish, is a beautiful Island located in the middle of the Caribbean. Its strategic location made it a must have territory to the Spaniards who colonized it over four hundred years before the United States took a special interest. It all started in the year 1898, with the Treaty of Paris Puerto Rico now is property of the United States. After centuries of being led by Sevilla and Madrid, Puerto Rico was now forced to look upon Washington. The series of events leading the Spanish-American War changed Puerto Rico permanently. From changing the Island’s name from Porto Rico to Puerto Rico to Americanizing the Puerto Rican people in all ways possible, the acquisition of Puerto Rico from the United States had numerous economic, social and political impacts.
Officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States of America situated in the
Puerto Rico's local Taíno population whose hunter and gatherer predecessors settled the island over 1,000 years previously the Spanish arrived called it Borinquén, and referred to themselves as boricua, a term that is as yet utilized today. Amid his second expedition to the Indies in 1493, Christopher Columbus restored a few Taíno prisoners to Borinquén and asserted the island for Spain, calling it San Juan Bautista. In 1508, Juan Ponce de León established the main European settlement, Caparra, close to a bay on the island's northern drift; Caparra was renamed Puerto Rico or "rich port" in 1521.
My research paper will be about Puerto Rico and its importance to the spanish language. It is located in the Caribbean sea, southeast of Florida. It is home to many US citizens in its beautiful tropic landscape. In this paper I will explain the important aspects of the Puerto Rican government, the people, and the lovely food.
Puerto Rico is a small island in the Caribbean. It was first settled around 1000 A.D. by the Taino Indians and called Borinquen. In 1493, Christopher Columbus claimed it for Spain but it wasn’t until the arrival of Juan Ponce de Leon in 1508 that Spain began to colonize and rule over the land and its native people. The Taino Indians believed the Spanish colonizers had divine powers and to test their theory they captured a Spaniard and drowned him. It is said that they watched him for several days until they were sure he was dead. When they learned that the Spanish were mortal, they revolted against them but with no success. As punishment, Ponce De Leon ordered 6,000 shot; survivors fled the mountains or left the island. After being settled by Spain and being enslaved, the native population was nearly wiped out by disease and war. The Spanish then began brining African slaves to the island to replace the Indian
The historians Lynn Thomas and Laura Briggs explore how the colonial state attempted to control women’s bodies and reproductive capacities in Kenya and Puerto Rico. Thomas focuses on the concern of British colonial officers in Kenya, particularly in the Meru tribe, about low birthrates. The British Empire felt that it was part of their humanitarian obligation as colonizers to ensure the health of women and their babies, discourage abortion, and encourage reproduction. In Puerto Rico, Briggs traces the fear of sexually transmitted diseases, over-population and eventually over-sterilization. The United States was first concerned about various diseases that their soldiers would pick up from prostitutes in Puerto Rico, and then their worry
White sandy sun kissed beaches, ice cold piña coladas with little umbrellas poking out the top, mingling with locals, waves crashing, and the sound of Bomba through the rows of palm trees surrounding the shorelines. This is the image that most people have of Puerto Rico and they would be right, for the most part, about this beautiful island. However, Puerto Rico which translate to “rich port” is far from the name it inhabits. The commonwealth has a $72 billion dollar debt which is causing the residents to live in poverty and the United States government is partially to blame. In addition, even through Puerto Rico has it 's own government the United States Congress has the final ruling. This is making it difficult for Puerto Rico to resolve this issue. The island and its residents that call it home are treated unfairly and the only resolution to help aid in their struggling economy and politics is to grant Puerto Rico statehood, making the island the 51st state of America.
When Columbus first arrived he found the island populated by thousands of Taino Indians who made the mistake of showing Columbus gold nuggets in the river. This was all Spain needed to finance its crown. Differences between the Spaniards and the Taints began around two years later when Diego Salcedo was killed by the Indians. The Taino Indians revolt against the Spaniards was met with no success and many left the island or fled into the mountains where they began new lives.
Puerto Rico should become a state. Recently, 61% of Puerto Rican voters decided in favor of statehood. They are already legal US citizens but have no voting rights, no federal tax return rights, and no federal medicaid/medicare rights. Additionally, they have a member of Congress, but he has absolutely no voting rights and is only there to voice opinions. Even further, the US can exclude Puerto Rico from any national law they choose because they are not currently a state, but Puerto Rico cannot reject laws that they do not agree with, even though they are not a state. This can easily be seen as a double standard. Bringing Puerto Rico into the union would also greatly benefit both the Puerto Rican economy and the US economy. The United States
One of the most interesting and exciting places I have had the pleasure of visiting was the Island of Puerto Rico. Getting on the plane and arriving on the island was the easy part, but learning to navigate the island and getting reliable transportation was a whole other ball game.
Although Puerto Rico is not a foreign country, many Americans think it is and even the President seems of treating it like one. This is because, during the campaign trail, President Trump promised to put America first by slashing foreign aid and scaling back our international commitments. Meanwhile, many Americans think the US government wastes too many taxpayer dollars on aid. Americans believe this money could be invested in health and education in the United States rather than helping the foreign county. And since Puerto Rico is classified as a foreign county, helping has been limited.
Puerto Vallarta is located in Jalisco, Mexico. The climate is very tropical because it’s in the Sierra Madre Occidental so, as in any other tropical place, there are many animals, trees and juicy fruits.
