The Choice
I was the start of a new day, the sun was shining, and autumn had decided take over for summer. I just started a new sport, and my first practice was today. My gaze was fixed on the window watching the cars drive by, and then my dad popped the question. The decision that I made about this question has shaped and changed my life forever.
I had woken up in feeling very gusto that day all because my first volleyball practice was supposed to start today. It was a nice cool fall morning with red, orange, and golden leaves scattered all over the ground, in the trees, and filling the air. I walked outside and felt the cool, crisp air expand around my body. My breath was thin and clear as I released each breath. Stepping into the car,

When I rose from my deep slumber, we were halfway home and my dad was talking with my mom on the phone, so I decided that it would be amusing if I pretended that I was asleep and listened to their conversation. I deliberately realised that their conversation was about me. I gradually started to wonder what they could possibly be talking about that was so important, so I was still and listened as closely as possible. Then I heard it the only word that I didn’t want to hear. Sports. I started to become anxious and fearful as I started to wonder what they wanted to do with sports, and why they were talking specifically about me. My sister did plenty of sports too. My dad hung up the phone and I finally decided that it was time to open up my eyes. When I did open them up my dad glanced over at me and said, “Anna we need to talk.” I knew that at that moment something wrong and terrible was about to happen. All I said was, “Okay”,and I braced myself for what was about to happen. He fixed his eyes on the road again, and then looked back at me with a sorrowful look on his face that made his face look contorted, this is how I knew that I wasn’t going to like what he was going to say at all. He opened his mouth once, but nothing came out. He opened it the same way again only this time the words came spilling out of his mouth.
“I’m sorry to say this, but me and mom talked and we decided that it would be best if you only did two sports, so you are going to have to decide
Counting down the seconds in a crowded dark hallway, listening behind doors to the song Welcome to the Jungle blasting in the gymnasium mixed with the sounds of the crowds roaring. The only thoughts going through everyone's head, is that this might be the last time we ever play together again. As soon as the song gets to the que we run out of the hallway under a tunnel made of arms, running into the moment that can make it or break it.
I walked outside the next morning feeling great. The bright vibrant sun shone on the freshly mowed grass. I loaded into my sister's car and we went off to school. The day passed extremely rapid,
The sport of volleyball was created by a man named William G. Morgan of Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895. Morgan was a physical education teacher at the YMCA and called it "mintonette". It was an indoor or outdoor pastime that had characteristics of both handball and tennis. The first rules were written down by Morgan himself. He wrote that the game called for a 6 foot 6 inch net and a court of 25x50 feet. A match composed of 9 innings and 3 serves for each team in each inning. In case of a serving error they got a second chance just like in tennis. If the ball it the net
“Okay, but if your grades start slipping you’re dropping out of one or both sports.”
The ball whipped through the air, echoing through the gym like the snap from a leather whip. Lauren, our libero, had served. I glanced at the flashing scoreboard and winced at the score: 21-23. The other team had received the ball and were ready to set their outside hitter. Their hitter made a lightning fast approach and the ball spun through the air over to our side, aimed right at me.
Soccer. fast moving, strategy, competitive, I loved those aspects in the game. In the month of March, when all the soccer tryouts began, I decided to try out for an older team which was 2 years older-my brother's team- just for fun. I went out on the day of the trial and surprisingly, I made the team. Feeling as if I had won the million dollar lottery, filled with excitement, on the side with fear because there were boys who were enormous and strong on my team. The only reason they were bigger, because I was 2 years younger.
In my life, just as everyone else’s, we win and lose some battles, but every once and awhile, we lose a big battle. When I was a sophomore I had tried out for the volleyball team and unfortunately I did not make it. While this was a big loss for me, I soon learned that I would come across a huge achievement.
“Hey Angelina, what sport do you want to try out for? Which one either soccer or volleyball?” my dad said, “I don't know actually, I'll find out next week.” I said, “Well you better find out soon, you dont have much time to choose, I really want you to try out for soccer, you know, maybe I can help you out with a few new skills.” my dad said. “ Well okay then.” I said not knowing what sport I wanted to play.
When my parents first took me to the pool, I played in the water like any other kid would with my floaties and pool noodles. I knew my parents were big on sports, but was always unsure on which they would settle me in. For awhile, I was set on golf since my dad started taking me out to golf courses and arranging golf lessons with one of his colleagues; golf was what interested him. Little did I know, my parents had different plans for me. They changed their minds and I was introduced to a swim coach after school one afternoon. I was able to start that same day, so I did, and that shortly became the one thing in my life that stayed constant ever since. Along with being a swimmer, I was also a ballerina and a pianist. I became a dancer first, then quickly switched over to play the piano since I was more interested in learning to play an instrument. I tried out
Once I arrived at the park, I breathed in the fresh air around me and took it all in. The air was cool and salty from the Atlantic ocean, and the trees were a stunning shade of orange this autumn. I could hear the waves crashing against the shore and leaves crunching beneath my feet. An ice cold wind whipped my hair, and I was glad I wore warm clothes. I made a beeline
People have always loved to play games. The human race has created hundreds of thousands of games to entertain themselves and to compete with one another. The most beloved games are those of physical sports. One of these sports, that has become a worldwide phenomenon, is the game soccer. The entire world gathers every four years to send out their best team, and to see which country is the ultimate champion. To play the game of soccer, there needs to be referees to ensure that the players are safe and are following the rules. Though this was once a highly respected position, in Virginia, working as a referee is no longer worth the time, due to a lack of respect, no support system, and the constant variations and changes to the rules.
I felt like I could do anything. The moment was extremely surreal. I hadn’t accomplished anything so arduous in my life. The crowd’s cheers were thundering through my body. I had so much adrenaline coursing through my veins that I wasn’t even weary. People were jumping up and down, screaming in victory, and clapping so loud I couldn’t hear myself think. I couldn’t believe that I had just won the State Championship volleyball game.
The popularity of Volleyball has increased dramatically over past years. This is a result of commodification. Commodification is the process of turning something into a commodity that can be bought and sold. Over the past 20 years, Volleyball has evolved from a simple, fun and recreational sport to a more appealing, more sexualized version, beach volleyball. As a result of this evolution, beach volleyball has received a vast improvement in popularity, especially amongst a male audience. The intent of this essay is to examine the sport of beach volleyball and explain why the individuals, and the sport itself, have evolved throughout the years. Volleyball’s transformation into beach volleyball is a positive step forward for the sport in
Volleyball, one of the world's greatest sports. From the hot and muggy gym, to sweat dripping down each players face, volleyball is not for the faint of heart. This sport requires a single-minded desire: to win. It takes more than just teamwork to win. Volleyball has always been one of my favorite sports. I would always meet a new friend anywhere I would go. Believe it or not these situations are how you could meet your life long best friends.
