This simple but intricate piece of art can be found on the walls of the second floor in the CFA. Although the fan is fairly small and often times over looked, when examined, its fine detail gives it character. This paper will address all aspects of design elements and principles. In addition provide information about the artist and how their background influenced the art, and choice of design.
Line, Dimension, and Quality
The first thing that can be noticed about this piece of art work is the accordion (the span of a fan when completely unfolded). Most hand held fans are known to have the opening with of at the most 180 degrees, with some form of fabric or string holding each leaf (the individual slices of a fan) together. However what made this fan different from other generic fans is that it was folded. This implies that the artist spent time folding the paper back and forth with delicacy and focus. The folds also tell me about dimension. Even though the fan was stretched out it was clear that the fan folded where the creases were. I could tell that the hinges (where two leaves meet) are not very far apart, which means if the fan was to be closed, it would be very thick.
Ironically the image painted on the fan, and the fan as a whole has some characteristic that would fall into one of the four categories of shape. The most prominent would be natural and no-objective. The artist clearly communicates the scenery of nature.
The scenery illustrated on the fan is a great

While many accomplishments build on existing knowledge, many significant breakthroughs result from those who have completely broken with tradition. Clearly then, significant breakthroughs do not always build upon existing knowledge.
Art is how you express yourself, and everyone does it in their own way, in their own style. I chose to write about the two following art works because I believe they have so many similarities but are done in completely different ways. For this comparison and contrast assignment the two works of art I chose to write about are called; End “Mixed Media” by: Terry Peterson, shown in the art building at Shasta College, and Forlakeph “Mixed Media in a Glass Jar” by: Gioia Fonda, also shown in the art building at Shasta College.
The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai is a famous woodcut print that is commonly referred to as The Great Wave. Hokusai Katsushika was one of the greatest Japanese printmakers of the 19th century. The print, The Great Wave, is a part of a 36-piece series of the views of Japan’s most famous mountain; Mount Fuji. Hokusai’s series was very popular and sold rather quickly. Due to its popularity, Hokusai decided to extend the series to 46 pieces. The original piece was created around 1830 and was published in 1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi. Within this paper, I will be discussing the analysis of this print while connecting my findings to the elements and principles of design.
Kehinde Wiley is a New York based artist whose paintings focus on the themes of empowering black men and combining classical and contemporary styles.
Looking at each of the art angles we see that only the front view shows implied lines with the separation of colors between the texture’s slopes. This texture is created by an upside down “V” hump throughout the artwork, which can be seen in the Enhanced View in the appendix. Moving from Left-Side to Right-Side the other artworks are shown at only certain angles, we see here lines become complete rather than implied, becoming more abstract; this also shows that the element of motion is from the viewer is needed to see this artwork completely. From the front view the artwork shows implied shape, the left side, shows shape with objects with curved edges and lines, and the right-side shows objects with straight/sharp edges. We can also say that, overall, this piece of artwork has form due to the necessity for the artist to create these 3rd-Dimensional “V” humps to show the other artworks at their angles. This work of art also employed value as shown in all 3 angles, we can see that at
Physical properties, in other words, are describing what you see. When I look at this painting I see many shapes displayed. According to Fichner-Rathus, Lois.in the book

Henri Théodore Fantin-Latour was a French painter who lived from 1836 to 1904. “Still Life with Vase of Hawthorn, Bowl of Cherries, Japanese Bowl and Cup and Saucer” is oil on canvas painting created by him in 1872. The artwork is 2x1.5 feet in a wide, thick golden engraved frame and mounted on a white wall on the second floor of Dallas Museum of Art (DMA). Fantin’s artwork is a composition of circular forms from the plump cherries to the pink blossoms of the hawthorn flower, to the Japanese bowl and fragile cup and saucer. So the main shape that was created is a geometric shape, circle, but there are also some organic shapes as well for example, the shapes of leaves, which came in different shades of green. The artist used very detailed lines

The first two art pieces shown for this course were very interesting, The Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu and the Statue of Gudea. They are very interesting to observe at the very least, because they have such a rich history from a time period that not many artifacts survived from. Looking at the dates of the objects they are actually about 500 years in difference, but the common person probably wouldn't have guessed that just by looking at them.
In the poem One Art, the speaker reflects over the many material things that she has lost in the past, like her mother’s watch, and even bigger things like houses. By the end of the poem she ends up confronting and reflecting over the loss of her loved one, which in turn shows a more intense side of loss for her and how she as a person deals with it. Elizabeth Bishop uses repetition, and her own interjections to help convey her belief that loss is an everyday part of life, but it is how you deal with it that changes the situation. Bishop uses her repetition to describe an aspect of loss, and how it changes and affects people over time.

For my paper, the element of art I choose to write on is shape, and the two pieces of art I chose to go with the shape idea is The Kiss by Gustav Klimt on page 418 and Counter-Composition V by Theo van Doesburg.
