3D printing, started in the late 80s by a company called Rapid Prototyping Technologies, although there was a delay in the patent application of the original conceiver Dr. Kodama. However the roots of 3D printing can be traced back to 1986 when the first patent was issued to Charles Hull who invented his machine in 1983, and he called it stereolithography and he later went on to co-found 3D system Corporation, which created the first 3D printer. Many other companies have since then developed 3D printers for commercial applications.
3D printing or Additive Manufacturing is a process that takes digital input in the form of Computer Aided Design (CAD) model and creates solid, three-dimensional parts through an additive, layer by layer process. In an additive process the desired object is created by laying down successive layers of material (usually molten alloy or plastics) until the entire object is formed. There are different processes that allow 3D printing to occur but the most common one used currently is Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM). The material that is used to make the object is then melted and the printer prints the object layer by layer until the full object is created. Depending on the printer type, the material used can be rubber, plastics, paper, metals and more. Our company would be able to make different prototypes of different materials with these printers. There would be no need to get special tools for the different materials.

As I mentioned before 3D files are generated from what is called a .stl file, which is a compressed triangular meshed surface. “These .stl files were originally intended for a rapid prototyping process called Stereolithography, and in the beginning were generated by CAD programs; however, because MRI and CT’s are surface scans, they too can generate a .stl file.
