Humans want to survive, and to survive one must be the best. This is what sparks the competitive nature in us all. One quote from Reed Russell,“Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing,” and another from Vince Lombardi,“Winning isn't everything, but the desire to win is,” are both about competition and how people perceive winning. Vince Lombardi’s quote, of desire being everything, is what is the more applicable of the two quotes. Desire to win causes one to try his best, society sees humans as a failures if he does not succeed, and with desire one does not obsess over only winning. Vince Lombardi once said, “Winning isn't everything, but the desire to win is." Having the desire to win means that one wants to be the best. As long as an athlete has put in his best effort, then he has completed his job. One example of this is when athletes want to prove that they can win, so they put in as much effort as possible. One time, at a lacrosse game, my team had to play against the best team. We had already beaten them before, but they did not have their best players. I had the desire to prove that my team could beat them, even with their full team. Another example of having the desire to be the best is wanting to beat people who are older than you. When I was in eighth grade, I wanted to prove that I was good at volleyball in the students vs. the parents game. Even though the parents were older and more skilled, we still had the desire to win. We had this desire because we
The next similarity is having the passion for the game. We all have passions in our lives, although many of us might not be clear with that passion yet, many athletes have found their passions When athletes have the passion for the game it can move athletes through tough times and stay hungry for the next game. Passion gives athletes a reason to work hard and be the best player they can be. With a passion, athletes have specific targets to shoot for. According to Dr. Stankovich “Many years ago it dawned on me how important it is in life to have a passion and purpose — to be dedicated to the nth degree, and to have specific targets to shoot for in the big picture of life. I have learned that without true passion (also loosely known as intrinsic motivation), it is extremely difficult to truly reach your full potential in life.” Although it is debatable wither passion can be taught, passion can be looked for.
It is within human nature to be competitive. While it is one of the most basic and primal instincts that has ensured our survival for centuries, today has become more for personal achievement. In movies, shows and on the internet we are constantly exposed to people competing for various reason. Athletes compete for the gold medal, game show contestants for money prizes and characters in movies for the object of their affections. When we best the challenges we decide to face, we often receive an overwhelming feeling of success along with the prize and, in turn, our confidence is boosted drastically. We are encourage to become the best versions of ourselves. However, when our attempts end in failure, we feel disappointed in ourselves and are discouraged from pushing ourselves again. In modern times, individuals often lack the motivation to challenge themselves because they fear their odds of failure. They would rather remain apathetic than even attempt to push themselves. It is essential that we have the dedication, fortitude and courage to regain the confidence to at least attempt a challenge or alter it to make it more beneficial to ourselves.
Jealousy is the key factor that pushes us to do better or it can overpower our thinking abilities because we want to be the best, so we don’t think about how it can affect the people around us. This is exactly what happens in the story, “MVP,” by Clare Mishica. Derek wants to be the most valuable player on his basketball team instead of Cole so much that he forgets to be a team player. When Cole gets hurt, Derek realizes how much more important the trophy and being a part of the team is than getting MVP. Teamwork is always more efficient than trying to achieve something individually because a person can do very little alone, but together we can accomplish a lot. The saying, “Two heads are better than one,” goes along with this perfectly.
The subjectively informative written speech was given in 1970 right before his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the year of his death. This speech applies to multiple areas professional, sports and personal, because of the principles of winning and success throughout it. Mr. Lombardi could never have imagined the impact that this speech would have on the world over 25 years later. This speech has been played for countless people over these years to motivate companies, teams, and individuals into reaching the only place to be in when everything is done first place. His use of repetition, allusion and smooth transition makes this speech easy to follow and ensures that the point of giving your all to reach first place is driven home. “But I firmly believe that in any man’s finest hour – his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear – is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle – victorious.”
Walter Payton once said "If you ask me how I want to be remembered, it is as a winner. You know what a winner is? A winner is somebody who has given his best effort, who has tried the hardest they possibly can, who has utilized every ounce of energy and strength within them to accomplish something. It doesn't mean that they accomplished it or failed, it means that they've given it their best. That's a winner." This meaningful quote suggests that being a winner doesn't necessarily mean that you have to win every single game or award; all you have to do to be a winner is show that you put effort and that you actually tried to win. This quote was very relevant to Walter Payton according to Don Yaegar, the author of Walter Payton's autobiography
1. Yes, the main purpose of going to competitions is to get the best score and get first place. But in reality, I believe being successful means striving for greatness and motivating one another to their full potential.
To many of us, sports are a way of chasing our dreams, but why? What in sports is so great? In “Why we Run”, the author states,” I think it is because without dream-”antelopes,” to chase we become what a lapdog is to a wolf.” The author conveys to us that in a sense, we don’t want to be established as the weak one, or seen as “what a lapdog is to a wolf”. Also, we do it for ourselves so that we believe more in ourselves. The author of “Why we Run” also
Coach Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers made the statement “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” HAving read the story about Timm Rosenbach in The Main Event, I would infer that he would disagree with Lombardi’s statement.
Answer: It’s not about winning it’s about having fun. Also everyone on our team tries their hardest so it’s ok.
“I believe that man’s greatest hour, in fact his greatest fulfillment, his finest fulfillment—is that moment when he has worked his heart out for a good cause and lies exhausted, but victorious, on the field of battle (Lombardi, 2001, p.46).” These are the words of Vincent Lombardi, perhaps the greatest football coach of all time. Lombardi’s leadership philosophy emphasized the importance of winning…striving for perfection, but not at all costs (Lombardi, 2003, p.ix). He believed in “being a person of character, finishing what you start, never compromising your goals, and

To start, a championship game does not need a winner. The traditional idea of winner does not make somebody who they are in life. Unlike those traditional views a winner is inside everybody, if they can feel good about
Sports have been a big part of my life since I was young. When I reach one goal, I begin a new and more challenging goal to achieve. When I overcome my goals, I feel a sense of happiness, and amazement that I can be the best that I can be.
Some people, such as Vince Lombardi, argue that the win is all there is. They say it motivates them to do well and will help them reach their
If a survey was made asking every person in the world whether they would rather lose or win, a resounding number of people would not think twice about it. They would pick winning over losing every time. Why would they not? Winning has many benefits: the feeling of beating a rival is full of enjoyment and pleasure; it also makes you feel great because you exceeded at something and beat it; winning also makes a person feel more powerful as if they can accomplish anything. Overall winning seems to be far greater than losing; however, there are many greater benefits in losing. To start, losing is far better for a person than winning; it makes a person stronger and makes the fight harder for the times ahead; after losing time and time again, when you finally get that win it feels so much sweeter; lastly there are far greater things than just winning.
