Health prevention has become more of a focus since the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and many different organizations have become involved in the pursuit of healthier lifestyles. Ethnic communities have become involved in supporting a healthier lifestyle because of the disparities that minorities have experienced with healthcare up until this point. Research has shown that minorities experience higher rates of preventable hospital stays, longer stays within healthcare facilities, and experience more medical errors with serious health consequences (Betancourt, 2014). Communities are focusing on social determinants or conditions within the environment that an individual live in to better all aspects of a healthy lifestyle (Healthy People.gov, 2016). One community based initiative that focuses on social determinants to improve health is Healthy People 2020.
Healthy People 2020 discusses a number of special population’s that have barriers to care including; race, age sex, sexual identity, age, disability, socioeconomic, and location; this post will discuss race (ethnic) group. There are a number of races mentioned in healthy people 2020, such as, Asian, American Indian, Alaskan, Latino and African American (Healthy People 2020, n.d.). Access to health care in an ethnic group is multifaceted from the lack of trust, lack of health care education, discrimination and cost of care including health insurance. According to Howard, Peace, & Howard (2014), African Americans have a greater risk of three preventable diseases, hypertension, renal failure and bacterial infections stating; “no other disease
The health status of the population in the United States is a national priority. The Healthy People 2020 outlines priorities and to improve the health of individuals and communities across the country. Healthy People 2020 is defined as a comprehensive set of national objectives for “improving the health of all Americans” (Healthy People 2020, n.d, para. 1). The Healthy people 2020, is aimed at improving the health of individuals and communities and envisions “a society in which all people live long, healthy lives” (Healthy People 2020, n.d, para 4). A short priority list was developed and contains twenty-six objectives knowns as Leading Health Indicators (LHI). The list of objectives was created to prioritize health issues that must be addressed and to find appropriate actions to take in order to improve the health of the population.
Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing ethnic minority group and there are estimated to be about 54 million living in the United States (Office of Minority Health & Health Equity, YEAR). The Hispanics are a minority group that struggle every day to survive, to provide for their families, to stay healthy and to live quality lives. This paper will discuss the Hispanics current health status, how health promotion is defined by the Hispanics and what health disparities exist for the Hispanics. Lastly, this paper will discuss the three levels of health prevention and their effectiveness given the unique
A more effective universal intervention mechanism needs to be revamped so that they take into account the history and culture of the minority populations. Peoples daily life activities, such as their work environment, the recreational activities that they participate in, and their social status affect their behavior towards diseases and disease prevention. These are factors that must be taken into account by health departments in local communities when designing interventions geared toward reducing health disparities.
In 2010, Healthy People 2020 was started by the Department of Human Health Services. Health programs and research topics were instituted to help Americans live healthier and longer lives (CDC, 2014). The 42 topics presented are all very important in maintaining the goals set by Healthy People 2020. If these programs were to be cut or budget restraints imposed on them, the impact would be felt by all Americans. There would be more unhealthy people, preventable chronic diseases would be more prevalent, and education and health associated programs would be
To formulate a strategic plan and competent clinician for promoting health and wellness is by identifying the health determinants. There is significant evidence contributed to our health or the condition of our health that they are commonly called Health Determinants (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2011). There are twelve determinants of individual's health status, such as livelihood, community or social encouragements or assistance, knowledge, career, atmosphere, ancestry or upbringing, sexual orientation and so forth. (Halifax Community Health Board, n .d.).
Social determinants of health are social, economic and physical factors that affect the health of individuals in any given population. There are fourteen social determinants of health but Income is perhaps the most important of these because it shapes living conditions, influences health related behaviors, and determines food security. In Canada, people with lower incomes are more susceptible to disease/ conditions, higher mortality rate, decreased life expectancy and poorer perceived health than people with high incomes. In numerous Canadian studies and reports, there has been more emphasis on health being based on an individual’s characteristics, choices and behaviours, rather than the role that income plays as a social determinant of health. Although Canada has one of the highest income economies in the world and is comprised of a free health care system, many low income families are a burden on the system because of the physical and mental health issues influenced by income insecurity. Low income individuals are heavier users of health care services because they have lower levels of health and more health problems than do people with higher incomes. This essay will address income as a social determinant of health in three key sections: what is known on the issue, why the issue is important and how can health and public policies address the issue. The main theme that runs through the essay is the income related health inequalities among low income groups compared to
Two main determinants of health in this article are behaviors of the community and socioeconomic status of the community. The behaviors include injection drug use and needles because theses actions bring about a change in health for the user (Friis & Sellers, 2014). Many drug users were sharing needles spreading diseases such as AIDS and causing the largest HIV outbreak that Indiana had ever experienced (Harper, 2015). Another determinant would be the socioeconomic status of the population at risk. A poor socioeconomic status is a social determinant of their disease because it gave them fewer options with less accessibility to health care and
Over the past 20 years a significant social movement in America has amplified public awareness toward the promotion of health and disease prevention, known as Healthy People 2000 and 2010. It has been beneficial in changing the focus of health care from a reactive standpoint to a proactive one, which endorses national health and prevention of disease (Edelmam & Mandle, 2010). However delivery of health care objectives is not enough. Health providers must recognize and incorporate cultural group patterns, and variations within that culture to provide optimal care that promotes wellness (Lipson & Dibble, 2008).
All Americans do not have equal opportunities to health and the ability to make healthy choices. Barriers to health and healthier decisions are sometimes too high for individuals to overcome even with great motivation. [Roberts Wood Johnson Foundation; commission to build a healthier America 2013].1 Profound influences on health are found to occur outside of treatment facilities where majority spend most of their time. The ability to live a long healthy life is determined by various social factors such as behaviour, community/society, education, income, racial/ethnic groups, the environments where we live, learn work and play. These factors are far from random and seem to be predetermined by various factors within and around the built
It is a common belief that optimum health is defined as being free of symptoms and the requirement of any medical attention, therefore, more thought is given to treating symptoms and disease rather than prevention. Many medical sociologists have defined optimum health as a person’s ability to perform expected social tasks such as work, school, and household chores. (Shi & Sing, 2015). Any person who is unable to perform such tasks would be considered sick. Contrarily, there are many people who engage in social tasks while suffering from various symptoms, and there are people who are not ill, but shrink away from them, which negates these assertions. According to the Blum Model, there are four determinants of health: environment, lifestyle, heredity, and medical care.
It has played an important role in the field over the last century, originating in traditional public health practice and evolving in response to changing population health issues and the need to develop additional strategies to address them”.2 Addressing the causes of disease and disability is the responsibility of local public health departments. They are charged with promoting overall community health and well-being. The biggest public health issues of the 21st century include, according to Mary Morgan and Jennifer Lifshay, chronic diseases (such as cancer, obesity and diabetes), gun violence, and homelessness, as well as communicable disease and maternal and child health.2 Many of these issues affect low-income and minority populations. The physical, social, and economic environments in which people live also influence
Health determinants are simply factors that affect health status in a population or individual. Your second paragraph, was interesting. Stress is very related to health imbalances, as it is linked to other areas of life; it is the silent killer. You are very right in saying that people inherit lifestyles that affect their health negatively. The very last sentence of the same paragraph tells us, that stress is very related to poor economy.
In April of 2001, National Minority Health Month was launched in response to the health promotion and disease prevention initiative, Healthy People 2010. Celebrated annually in April, National Minority Health Month presents an opportunity to increase awareness of the health disparities that continue to affect racial/ethnic minority populations. This year’s theme, “Accelerating Health Equity for the Nation,” focuses on the critical role of fast track methods to reducing health disparities. The health status and outcome for of many racial/ ethnic minority populations has remain poor and declining, despite massive health promotion campaigns. Most health promotions failed to address respects for diversity, social factors and cultural needs of the population being served. Research indicates cultural competency enhances the capacity of healthcare promotions to provide more responsive assistance to racial/ethnic minority populations. In accordance with this year 's National Minority Health Month theme, the Myrlie Evers-Williams Institute of the Elimination of Health Disparities (MEW) will provide the inaugural launch of Ready, Step, Set! Moving of the Fast-Track to Fitness. This program will provide a cultural competent fast track mechanism to address the high rates of inactivity and related chronic diseases among racial/ethnic minority women of the urban Jackson community, by addressing the environmental and
The developments in public health are based on an understanding of different factors that influence people’s health and wellbeing. These aspects typically constitute a complex interplay of biological, behavioral, socioeconomic and environmental factors (CDC, 2005). The public health system seeks to obtain the best outcomes by actively managing these factors at an early stage. However, it is not easy to implement prevention interventions or practices. Therefore, public health necessitates sustained action by the government, communities, individuals and families to minimize
