How to Determine Your Audience
Knowing your audience is a topic that we need to understand more about because by understanding an audience the message will be better understood.
From the standpoint of the audience, having a messenger deliver a message without any reference points makes the interpretation more difficult than it needs to be. There needs to be a frame of reference in communication to be successful, and this example should explain a bit more about knowing your audience. Many people develop hearing loss, or strained vision as they age, and communicating with people with decreased senses is different than that of a person or group with better senses of perception. Understand your audience to better communicate with them.

Are you talking to an audience of women, men, children, students, retired people, sales people, suppliers, etc. Or are you speaking to audience of business professionals, unemployed persons, or anything in between? Is your audience a return customer, potential customer, upset customer, or perhaps a potential applicant? Know who you are dealing when communicating. There are many alternatives to consider when determining an audience, but common sense will be your best ally.
Beyond common sense, one should use good sense when communicating in a business setting. Good common sense means many things, some examples would be using professional wording and proper diction instead of common slang. Another methodology that can be used in business communication is effective listening, and we will look at this in more depth in later segments. Good sense means being aware of the time of day as well as the time of year when communicating because the audience very well may be somewhere else mentally depending on each of those
