As everybody say: “College are the best four years in your life”. I suppose people say this, for the reason that it’s an opportunity to learn, mature, and socialize. Besides getting good grades, making friends should also be a priority in college. Introducing yourself, slowly bonding with somebody, until that friendship built to great relationship with trust. What if someone makes friends backwards? Skipping the introduction, and scratching out the “Icebreaker”. Will that be considered weird and deviant?
Deviance as a sociological term does not mean perversion or depravity, deviance is exhibiting behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society. When on the topic of deviance, we are discussing the violation of social norms. Social norms are the rules that a group uses for appropriate and inappropriate values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. These rules may be explicit or implicit, meaning they are either expressed clearly or simply implied indirectly. There are many different causes of deviance, willingly or unwillingly. When talking about deviance, a person can get a deviant identity in many ways. You can look at it in terms of physical or behavioral characteristics. When people acquire a deviant role, it is common to be viewed in a negative way by many people.
Among any community there is a set of boundaries that must be respected under penalty of being labeled as deviant. Consequently, a community will create agencies of control in order to punish and fight against all the forms of behavior considered as deviant. In his Study in the Sociology of Deviance, Kai T. Erikson defends the point that deviant forms of behavior are a natural and beneficial part of social life. One of his main arguments is that, in our modern society, “the agencies of control often seem to define their job as that of keeping deviance within bounds rather than obliterating it altogether” (Wayward Puritans 24:2). These theories alone can explain the reasoning behind someone’s deviant behavior. But, in There Are No Children Here we see all of these theories being demonstrated. People who suffer from personality disorders often display deviant behavior. The mental illness itself is not deviant. They typically have problems with social skills, mood swings, emotional states, and are often unable to maintain healthy, stable relationships. Many sufferers do not possess the capability to have genuine emotions, including empathy for others. A personality disorder is the basis of many circumstances of maladaptive behavior including substance abuse, self-harm, suicide, and criminality.

I will lead with the purpose of transparency and doing the correct things to build trust in my kingdom and lead by example. The NCAA and its student-athletes deal with much more than are seen by the general public. The coaches and players always have hidden agendas. Scandals or infractions are committed every year in collegiate sports and are left unnoticed. The NCAA does its best in trying to keep this under control but have difficulty doing so. Student-Athletes receiving improper benefits and breaking NCAA rules are a common group and information on these atrocities must be brought to light.
The quote, “The more expensive a school is, the more crooks it has”, caught my attention because not many would expect that an expensive school would have crooks in it. Most people wouldn’t expect that there are more crooks in an expensive school since in a society only upper class and some middle class people would be able to afford to go to an expensive school. People would think the types of people that go to an expensive school must be respectable and have a good nature, since they are trying to become educated and prepared for the world. Instead, according to Holden there are more crooks in an expensive school than other types of schools. As I have been constantly reminded throughout the duration of this course, deviance can have many definitions. For the purpose of this paper, I will used the relativist definition: deviance is behaviors that illicit a definition or label of deviance. However, behaviors or acts are not inherently deviant. They become so when the definition of deviance is applied. So the focus is not on why individuals violate norms, but instead how those norms are constructed. Norms are rules of behavior that guide people’s actions (Inderbitzin, Bates and Gainey 2015:3). They are society’s rules of appropriate behavior. Norms are generally broken down into three categories: laws, mores, and folkways. Laws are the strongest norms backed by official sanctions or a more formal response. Mores are “moral” norms that may generate outrage if broken. And folkways are everyday norms that do not generate much uproar if they are violated.
Rape, still the most underreported crime in America, has seemed to expand exposure when placed, and rarely dealt with, in a college campus setting, which has dampered the many lives, relationships, and respect towards everyone. College should be focused on growing exponentially in schooling and bettering yourself, not wondering if you could be the next sexual assault victim.

Over the last two and half decades, campus crime as a social issue has come to the forefront of public attention and is regularly reported in both print and electronic media. Specific and general legislation has also been passed in order to prevent campus crime from occurring as well as to educate those who are either in danger of victimization or have the ability to prevent victimization and assure that justice is done. However, campus crime is not a new issue in regard to its occurrence, only in that it has finally attracted both public and media attention. Furthermore, Sloan III and Fisher (2011) suggest that this movement to recognize and prevent the occurrence of crime on college and university campuses (known throughout this book as the dark side of the ivory tower) did not pop up overnight. Instead, they argue that through a long and arduous process, four different activist groups were able to socially construct the problem as a proper and pertinent social issue, and influence legislation designed to curb campus crime, and hold those responsible, accountable for their action or inaction.
