Diabetes: A Complex Health Problem

Diabetes is a common disease, which can be a serious life-long illness caused by high level of glucose in the blood. This condition is when the body cannot produce insulin or lack of insulin production from the beta cells

Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to properly use and store glucose. The glucose then backs up in the blood stream and causes a person’s blood sugar to rise to high. There are two types of Diabetes. Type 1 is referred to as Insulin Dependent Diabetes. In this type the body completely stops producing insulin. Insulin is the hormone that lets the body use the glucose found in foods for energy.

First let’s establish what diabetes is. Diabetes is a disease that affects how the body uses Glucose, the main type of sugar in the blood. The body takes in and breaks down foods into glucose and others sugars that are needed to fuel the body functions. The Glucose level in the blood rises after a meal and triggers the Pancreas to make the hormone Insulin and release it into the bloodstream. But when it comes to people with diabetes, the body can’t make or respond to insulin properly.

Diabetes is the complex medical condition by which the entire body is affected and in turn requires daily self-care. In reference to the Better Health Channel (2015), diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is the potentially life-threatening condition where the pancreas loses its ability to produce insulin at a rate that is able to maintain and regulate blood glucose levels in order for the body to work effectively (Diabetesaustralia.com.au, 2015).

Diabetes is a very common disease in the world, especially in the western countries; it's a disease that has chronic abnormal high glucose level in the blood, which may caused by insufficient production of insulin, or improper functionality of insulin and its receptors in the metabolic pathways and mechanisms (Hansen, 2012).

The Centers for Disease Control described how diabetes refers to a group of conditions that are characterized by a high level of blood glucose, commonly referred to as blood sugar. Too much sugar in the blood can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening problems.

Diabetes is initially caused by the imbalance of glucose in the body. Glucose is a sugar that the body's cells need in order to survive (PubMed 2012). It provides it with the energy necessary to allow the body to function on a day to day basis. Different factors lead to the uncontrollable nature of glucose that defines diabetes.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a serious, chronic disease which affects one out of every eleven people in the United States. Diabetes Mellitus, also known as Diabetes, is a complex endocrine disease dealing with excessive glucose in the blood. The disease process lies within the body’s metabolic state in which the body metabolizes carbohydrates, proteins, and fats leading to either defective insulin production or insufficient amounts of insulin. Diabetes has several pathogeneses, signs and symptoms, risk factors, complications, treatment goals and teaching practices. In this paper, I will discuss the complex nature of Diabetes and its effects on the human body.

Diabetes also known as diabetes mellitus is a disease related to metabolism, caused due to high level of glucose present in the blood. Diabetes is caused because pancreas is not able to produce enough insulin or cells are not able to respond to the insulin. The most common symptoms include periodic urination, increase thirst and hunger.

World health organization states diabetes as “a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces” Diabetes mellitus is one of the most prevalent diseases in the world with the ranking of 9th with respect to number of deaths.
