“Health Occupations Education (HOE) prepares secondary and adult students for employment in the healthcare industry and for postsecondary education. Supervised clinical experience is an integral part of all HOE programs.”(Health Occupations Education) There is a wide range of different occupations within the health department to choose from. These range from helping with infants, surgeons, being a family doctor, to becoming a pharmacist. Two of those occupations which are commonly looked into are pharmacy and nursing, such as a nurse practitioner. Healthcare has had a major involvement in the world, it is a need and a demand today. As if the world was a play, pharmacy and nursing have major leads in the health department. They are both a well paying job and have exceptional features, the schooling is about the same, and the job opportunities are both increasing at a steady rate. As some of the higher paying jobs in the health department, pharmacist falls on an average salary of $121, 500 and nurse practitioners fall on about an average salary of $97,990 per year. Depending on which facility the job is obtained and in which state, the salary will change (“How to Become a Nurse Practitioner”, “Learn How to Become a Pharmacist). Before choosing a health career based off of the salary, the key features of the occupations will help understand the profession and help decide which choice is better for certain people. A nurse practitioner is an advance practice registered nurse
Both Nurse Practitioners (NP) and Physician Assistants (PA) are two very important professionals in the field of medicine. They both work under the supervision of a licensed physician, and their functions are also quite similar with very minor differences between the two. Due to such similarities it has become very difficult for the general population to differentiate between these two professionals (Nurse Practitioner School, 2015). The nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have gone on to earn a master's or doctorate degree in a specialty area of nursing, such as family practice, adult practice, pediatrics or women's health. Their duties include diagnosing and treating acute and chronic conditions, prescribing medication,
A nurse practitioner (NPs) have the option to negotiate their own contract and be compensate for what they believe they are worth. They are in high demand especially in the minute clinics, such as CVS, Wal-Mart health, and Walgreen (Annual Income for Nurse Practitioners on the Rise, 2015). The nurse practitioners salaries are determined by the going rate for a precise service in the geographic area and which also include their experience (Danielsen, Potenza, & Onieal, 2016). According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioner, the rate for NPs has increased from 98,786 in 2011 to 108,643 in 2015 (Annual Income for Nurse Practitioners on the Rise, 2015).
The Physician Assistant (PA) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) career fields were the medical fields’ response to the physician shortage that began in the 1960s, but the shortage still exists today. As the population continues to grow, the gap continues to grow as well. Medical schools were having a hard time producing as many doctors that were needed to fill in the gaps in a timely manner, leaving the medical field looking for ways they could have health care providers diagnose and treat patients, but educated in half the time of a doctor. The PA program was then born out of the military. Medical doctors watched as military doctors and medics came back, but they had no formal training except for on-the-job training. The NP program was derived from previous midwifery program. Currently, as the physician shortage is still impending more and more PAs and NPs are being hired to fill in the gaps. This is causing many questions to arise: Are they qualified?, What kind of education do they have?, and Should I feel safe?. Patients want to know that they are getting excellent care, and that their medical providers are qualified to diagnose and treat patients accurately.
As of 2008, there were about 753,600 Licensed Practical Nurses and 2,618,700 Registered Nurses in the United States (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010-11). In the year 2018, the LPN employment percentage is expected to rise 21% while the RN rate should be approximately 22% (U.S. Department of Labor, 2010-11). This may not seem that high, but it is, when one considers that the expected employment rate for a Dentist is only expected to be 16% (U.S Department of Labor, 2010-11). Nursing is a highly respected and sought after career because every person that enters this profession is able to make a difference and is needed by the general population for his/her skills and contributions to the medical field. When a person is contemplating entering
Like what was stated previously, the cost of having Nurse Practitioners in place of doctors is lower. This is because their salaries are much less and the cost structure is lower. Evidence of this can be seen with Medicare and Medicaid. These government sponsored programs will pay for 85% of these services in comparison with doctors. This is important, because it is showing how the lower cost structure is one reason why Nurse Practitioners are playing a major role inside a health care environment. (Pickert, 2009)

One good Career job in the medical field is to be a Physician Assistant. If a person wants to work under the Physician this is the job. Nurses must be permitted to practice in harmony with their professional education, and the knowledge they receive must prepare them to provide patient-centered, safe, high-quality care (IOM, 2011). Between 1995 and 2009, there was a 48% increase in the amount of nurse practioners (NP) to primary care physicians (NASEM, 2017). The schooling is relatively shorter for NP than it is for an MD. In 2025, there will be more of an emphasis of the baccalaureate versus the associate degree, thus more baccalaureate degreed nurses at the bedside. With this change, some nurses

The various kinds of health professionals are educated in separate schools but with considerable overlap in curricula and training requirements. They are, however, expected to integrate their training and work together after graduation. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of this approach to professional education in terms of costs, educational efficiency, and patient care quality. List one advantage and one disadvantage for each.
The role that nurse practitioner (NP) plays within the increasing complex health care system is a constant changing role with the Consensus Model and the introduction of the Affordable Care Act in 2010. The scope of the nurse practitioner (NP) includes the care of the young, the old, the sick and the well. The educational needs of a nurse practitioner vary greatly from that of a Registered Nurse (RN), in the amount of education as well as the focus of the education. NPs provide coordinated primary care with the use of comprehensive health histories and physical examinations, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses, the management of medications and therapies, ordering and interpreting tests results, and educating and
The nursing profession encompasses the largest employment in a hospital setting as well as providing most of the long-term care. Registered nurses are the primary providers of patient care and are one of the largest occupations in the United States with an average salary of $66,700 annually. The National Advisory on Nursing Education has recommended that two-thirds of the nurses receive at least a bachelor degree in nursing. Going out and being given the opportunity to perform cholesterol, blood glucose, and A1C testing under the supervision of a pharmacist is an excellent opportunity to learn the skills needed to be a pharmacist. I believe that hand-on learning experience is the best way for me to develop professionally and become a successful pharmacist. For me I like to learn about things in class then go out and be able to apply my skills in practice. Duquesne Pharmacy provided the free screening at the event; the pharmacy is associated with Duquesne University. Duquesne University gave students the opportunity to participate in the screening events offered by Duquesne Pharmacy. By using students to give free screening, the pharmacy can save money at the same time giving the students an opportunity to apply their skills. I believe that the limitation facing Duquesne Pharmacy is that it is not very well know. The pharmacy is located in the Hill District, so it may be known in their community, but I’m not sure if other nearby communities knows that they exist. The pharmacy also offers many free programs and screenings that the general population may no know about. I did not know what the Duquesne Pharmacy had to offer until I sat down and talked to some of the staff members about what they do on a daily basis.
