In 1656, Diego Velazquez made a painting titled, Las Meninas. He was a painter for a royal family and many of his paintings consisted of the family. Many years later, Pablo Picasso painted over 50 variations of this painting. One including his 1957 painting that was based strongly on the princess of the royal family. Although both paintings can be related to each other, they both each portray their own meanings. It may be easy to tell that both paintings may be similar because of their appearance of the princess. In Velazquez’s painting, he paints five year old, Infanta Margarita, who is being helped by many servants, including her bodyguard and dog. In Picasso's painting, he also includes the princess, who

Velazquez uses a realistic style to create a scene and tell a story, but Picasso uses geometric shapes to study the princess’s body and face. Another difference is the people. Velazquez includes many people in his painting, including himself, while Picasso only includes the princess and a maid. Because Velazquez adds so many people into his painting, many people argue what his main focus was. However, in Picasso’s painting it is clear that he valued the princess, which makes her the main focus in his painting. Another difference is the meaning of the paintings. Velazquez titled his painting Las Meninas, or ladies in waiting. This is odd because many of the people in his painting are focused on the princess, which may imply that she is the meaning of the painting. But because of the title, it is confusing to tell what Velazquez was trying to portray. However, Picasso takes up most of the space in his painting to draw the princess. Although a maid can be seen in the painting, it is clear that Picasso was trying to show the importance of the princess. Both artists painted these works to portray something. It may not be clear, but I think Velazquez was trying to show the importance of everyone in the castle. He includes himself, the princess, maids, king and queen, and other figures to not put too much focus on one person. I think he uses this strategy to show everyone is important and plays a specific role to make the royal castle so important. This is also why he created
A successful monarchy relies upon a stable leader who is concerned with the satisfaction of those he rules over. Henry Bolingbroke the IV in Shakespeare's Henry the IV Part I follows a trend set by his predecessor in Richard II of self-indulgence and neglect of his kingdom. These leaders worry about the possibility of losing their kingdom or their soldiers to other nobles who were also concerned more with obtaining a higher position rather than governing. The king must also be wary of his own life, something that was once revered and guarded closely by other nobles. Wars once fought for gaining or protecting land are overshadowed by personal battles fighting for the position of king.
The dark blue left eye and light blue right tells me that Pablo Picasso may have used her actual eye color. Her body is almost as if she had her back to Picasso and turning her torso toward him; such as in most contrapposto art. In the original sketch you can clearly see her arms and the detail of her body. She is not looking back at Picasso, but instead looking toward the opening curtain. The hair of the young lady is also more visible as it drapes down her back. By repositioning her arm and adding the mask he completely changed her appearance, not only in her face but her body as well. Picasso gave her a double point of view, as you look at her nose and the angles it provides. The hand under the chin gives it an almost claw like feature, with what seems to be her fingers going to her eye to her the opposite side of the chin. With the sharp angles and mask and all the distortion it would be difficult to truly see just the young lady. It is almost as if she is shards of glass pieced together to make a
Alvaro was the one that was quiet and would copy other people's paintings instead of making some kind of original and unique art. Cristobal was the troublemaker that would steal things from Mr.Velazquez and blame it on Juan. Mr.Velasquez knew that it was not Juan’s fault and he threatened to send cristobal away if he did it again. But, he did it again and Mr.Velasquez did not do anything because Cristobal was a good drawer and painter and was much better than Alvaro. There was a request by the King for Diego Velasquez to paint a portrait of him.
He wanted to make the painting his own way. Picasso had his own point of view on las meninas by just painting the princess and the attendants. I think he decided to paint just the princess and attendants because he wanted to show the difference between the two. The princess is highly praised while the attendants don’t get noticed. The attendants are always longing in the princesses shadow, just like how in the painting the attendant is kneeling down to the princess, supposedly helping her get ready.I think Velazquez created such a work because he was trying to put his own life experiences into something. I think he was trying to express two different groups of people. In the painting there is the royal princess and her attendants. There is other people in the painting that people are less focused on. When you look at the painting there is people gathered around

Las Meninas Modes of Analysis Essay Las Meninas or (The Maids of Honor) was created by Diego de Silva y Velazquez in 1656. It can be found on page 160, Figure: 1.169. Las Meninas was created by the use of oil on canvas. Las Meninas is representational art because of its depiction of figures and objects that are recognizable of and what is represented.
Velazquez and Picasso made two similar painting’s, both named las meninas. Both of the painting’s represent a princess being helped by her maids or helpers. While Picasso’s was very abstract, Velazquez's was very realistic. While Picasso’s painting focused more on the princess, Velazquez’s painting focused more on the maids/helpers.
Both of the paintings have something to say in different ways. Picasso’s painting focused mainly on the Princess. Velazquez’s painting centers on the Princess, her helpers, a dog, and even Velazquez himself. The paintings are different even though they are of the same thing. Picasso’s picture had many shapes of squares in it, if you look
Las Meninas, which means the maids of honor, is considered to be Velázquez’s masterpiece within has last few years (Harris 170). Most of the information we know today, come form Palomino, who is the Court Painter to Phillip IV’s successor, Chalres II (Harris 170). Palomino even knew all of the people being portrayed except for one, and even gave the date when the painting was completed, 1656 (Harris 170). The center of the piece is focused on the Infanta Margarita, the five-year-old princess, who is surrounded by her two meninas, maids of honour. The menina standing on the Infanta’s left side, handing her a vessel of water while doing a curtsey is named María Aguestina Sarmineto (Carr 47). The menina standing on her right look as if she is about to bend down to whisper something to the princess or about to do a curtsy is named Isabel de Velasco (Carr 47). In the bottom right corner of the painting are two dwarfs, Maribarbola and Nicolas Pertusato (Carr 47). Nicolas appears to be awakening the mastiff (Carr 47). Palomino said that when the mastiff was being painted it had stayed motionless (Harris 170). Standing behind them is Marcela Ulloa, who is the attendant to the ladies in waiting, and a male escort who is not named (Carr 47). In the doorway of the painting stands the Queen’s Palace Marshal, also known as the Queens Chamberlain,
I chose Velazquez painting of Dona Maria of Austria, Queen of Hungary. I chose this painting because it stood out to me. The attention to detail in this painting was extremely realistic, just as Neo-Classicism entails. According to my research (because I do not know anything about art or the history of art), Neo-Classicism was introduced in the mid 18th century (khan academy, n.d). Velazquez was a part of the 17th century. His paintings to me seem to come from that same style, or the style came from his ideas. I first chose a painting of his (not the royal painting) that stood out to me, beautiful work of art, so realistic, even down to the architecture of the Serlian Arch. Then I read the posting guideline line again, and had to talk about
The difference between the style of Diego Velázquez's and Pablo Picasso, is like night and day. Diego Velázquez's created the work of art “Les Meninas” in attempts to achieve naturalism by using extreme details and accuracy within his portraits and the environment. In contrast to Pablo Picasso’s who created “The Maid of Honor”, which is an abstract depiction of “Les Meninas.” Picasso did not attempt to represent reality, instead he used shapes, color, and forms in his paintings to convey the underlying meaning of the original painting “Les Meninas.” The following interpretation of these master pieces will present an emotional viewpoint in the analysis.
1. We know that experts had trouble being able to tell the difference between the works of Picasso and Braque. Defend whether or not this made each artist's work any less original.
The figures on the right have very odd looking faces, which Picasso was pulling from African art. (Harris & Zucker, n.d.) So Picasso was incorporating even more influences into a reaction of other paintings. Matisse and Picasso were both pushing each other into new territory in the art world.(Harris & Zucker, n.d. 2) By trying to upstage each other the art became more and more different than the accepted art at the
While the two paintings are both about women, they were executed using different methods, Picasso employs Cubism while Velasquez paints like an Impressionist. The two paintings vividly expressed what the two artists wanted to reveal through their art works – confusion and ambivalence in Picasso’s and egoism in
At first while looking at the artworks it is actually not possible to figure out that the artist himself might be representing him in his piece. But after reading the notes and knowing that the artist is also a part in the image does enhances the two works of art. For the first image of The Burial of Count Orgaz by El Greco, he did not include his portrait in the artwork, Instead, he included an image of his son. On his son’s handkerchief, he wrote, “El Greco made me”. That indicates how El Greco will live on through this painting and through his son. But he is not done here yet, placed against the saint is one of the El Greco’s landscape paintings. Such portraits do enhance the artwork a lot. In the second image of Las Menians by Velazquez is different from the previous one as the artist is prominently found in this artwork. Left side of the image is dominated by the back of the artists and right side by the figures. The figures including young princess, the king, and the Queen. The princess is all dressed up for her portrait session with Velazquez. However, in the close up picture, I can see the artist seems very bored by being there. As if he just wants to finish the portrait and leave. He has this unpleasant face that according to me does enhance the artwork and makes in more interesting. He is like the focal point of the piece to set the artwork unique beside others.
