Interviews Two individuals were interviewed in conjunction with conducting research for this report and interestingly, both individuals had similar attitudes, values, and beliefs about the topic. Melanie Campbell, a married female with three children and a conservative upbringing was interviewed first and asked the question “of all the sexual related deviancies and crimes, to include rape, which one do you think is the most grievous and dangerous to society?” Campbell initially thought rape was the most serious; however, when the other types of crimes and deviances such as sexual assault, harassment, sexual sadism, voyeurism, and pedophilia were provided as an example, she immediately stated pedophilia and sex crimes against children were by far the worst (Campbell, 2015). Campbell was also asked what her first thought was when hearing the term pedophile to which she responded a sick man who should be castrated. Campbell’s comments are not uncommon and many in our society have similar feelings as evidenced by the stiff penalties our laws and courts hand out to people who engage in such acts. This writer also thought it was interesting, though not surprising, that a sick male was the first thing that came to mind when hearing the term pedophile – especially when one considers the definition of pedophile is child molesting; an adult who has sexual activity with a prepubescent child. The definition does not delineate between a male or female molester; however, when most
Adding on to the general lack of responsibility that society places on female sex offenders for their crimes, there is one typology that appears to absolve the offender of any wrongdoing. Whether it is the Teacher/Lover typology developed by Matthews, Mathews, and Speltz or the current Heterosexual Nurturer typology developed by Vandiver and Kercher, there are many problems with the wording alone (). The key issue with both typologies is that it seems to describe a consensual relationship instead of a sexual assault. Gender double standards prove how these typologies are flawed. We classify a male adult teacher who is having intercourse with a young female student as a sex offender, yet we classify a female adult teacher who is having intercourse
Of the many problems faced by children and adolescents, few provoke such moral outrage as childhood sexual abuse. Many times, as on the television show “To Catch a Predator”, such abuse can be inflicted by strangers who may gradually become familiar with the child online. Sadly, however, often times the perpetrator of sexual abuse on children is someone much more familiar to the child- someone the child may even love.
Throughout the ages, media and society have been concerned over children. Instead of youth as folk devils, children nowadays serve as the victims of folk devils (Critcher, 2002, p.532). With these trigger events popping up, stereotypes are gradually formed. In recent British history, Paedophile had become one of the most terrifying folk-devils (Jenkins, 1992, p.99). Paedophile behaviour is a moral panic one legal case and the panic is generally fuelled by the sensationalism of media in
As time progresses on, more reports of child sexual abuse (CSA) have been documented. According to Colangelo and Cooperman, CSA is defined as “the use of a child under 18 years of age as an object of gratification for adult sexual needs and desires.” Another definition of CSA is “sexual abuse [that] occurs whenever one person dominates and exploits another by means of sexual activity or suggestion.” (Hall, M., & Hall, J., 2011) it is difficult to
Pedophiles: are those that develop a sexual interest over a long period of time. Commit their crimes for a variety of reasons and go on committing their crimes with little hopes of rehabilitation. The internet serves purpose to many pedophiles today, allowing them to commit a crime and computer crime.
Public Eye on Sexual Offenders In preparing for this essay it has been identified that sexual offenders are not a homogenous group of individuals and that this is an umbrella term used to describe a range of behaviours ranging from acts of voyeurism and exhibitionism, to more serious acts of pedophilia and rape. For the purpose of this essay I have chosen to focus on the more serious forms of sex offending which in my opinion, are the cause of much of the current attention. In order to understand why sexual offenders attract so much attention I will begin by considering today’s society and the emergence of post-modernist values and the preoccupation with risk.
With the Pandora’s Box opened, we may find ourselves forced to rediscover morality due to our natural tendencies. This does not mean accepting adult-child relationships. Figure 3 indicates if we are serious about protecting children, then that ultimately requires some level of understanding, which is a problem for most because that is dangerously close to compassion. On the contrary, the risk they pose is the very reason why we need to support pedophiles who do not want to become sex offenders. We all want the same thing. We do not want them to offend nor their potential victims to offend. In 2008, Michael Seto, a forensic psychologist, published a book stating that the onset of pedophilia is right around the stages of puberty, as with any other sexual orientation. I believe we can prevent a greater number of victims if we put more energy into early detection and providing support before the first offense occurs, rather than solely relying on punishment after the fact. We need to be thinking about the children that pedophiles once were and catch them at their vulnerable stages, which are during puberty. There we can find a sense of compassion and support to want to help. In 2014, Margo Kaplan, an associate professor at Rutgers School of Law, wrote an op-ed in New York Times stating that pedophilia is neurologically rooted, supporting Cantor’s research.
This reflection paper and article critique has helped me to better understand the issue of sexual offense and the state of sexual offenders. This paper has helped me gain understanding on the varied features of sexual offense which subsequently allowed me to grasp the way in which measures can be taken to stop the issue altogether; these future measures include formulation of new policy reforms across different
Pedophilia is a psychological disorder in which a person is primarily or exclusively attracted to children who have not undergone puberty. A pedophile, the term for a person with this condition, is not necessarily one who engages in sexual activities with children. However, they have strong urges and sexually arousing fantasies about having sex with a child. Generally, pedophiles are attracted to children under the age of thirteen years. In our society the term pedophile is more broadly used for anyone who is attracted to a minor or someone that's under the age of consent. However, there are different terms used for different types of paraphilias involving minors. A paraphilia is a
The expanding consideration on pedophilia has brought about numerous Americans to question what this issue involves, its qualities, and what kind of treatment ought to be looked for abusers. What is pedophilia? Do individuals be pedophiles or would they say they are conceived that way?
There are very few things that people agree on universally, however one of them is their attitude toward pedophiles. No other type of person elicits the same kind of reaction as those who prey on arguably our most vulnerable population. Pedophiles alone out of other sex offenders drive intense fear and anger into the public, so much so that they are the reason for Megan’s Law requiring sex offenders to register as such since 1994. More recently, the enactment of an “International Megan’s Law” that was voted on last year requires for all sex offenders to get their status added to their passports. The only issue with all of this is being a pedophile isn’t a sex crime.
Sex offenses receive an inordinate amount of special attention from the public as well as the criminal justice system. Is this because our system is a static reflection of the society/community they answer to? Sexual offense stories infiltrate every membrane of our society, from legal mores to norms, from social media to religion. Our system of justice can’t help but deliver attention to this area. Justice demands it and society needs it for interpersonal validation. The Criminal Justice system has given humans a scale to rate what is normal and what is deviant. Our text (Okada. p.182) shares that
Attitudes are thoughts that you have accepted as true and that lead you to think, feel, or act positively or negatively toward a person, idea or event. They represent an emotional readiness to behave in a particular manner. (Reece) Positive and negative attitudes affect how you work and how you influence other people around you. These attitudes can absolutely be changed though because we are not born with those attitudes. We form them as time passes, depending on the situations that we have been through. For instance, if you had a job where your supervisor was racist toward you, you would begin to form a negative attitude about supervisors thinking that all of them are going to be racist. Instead, you can change your attitude by thinking that not everyone acts the same way. A positive attitude can make a difference between an amazing life and a nonsense one. Therefore, a lot of people should try to change their attitude to a positive one.
In 2002 the Catholic Church was rocked with scandalous reports of Priests sexually molesting young children and particularly boys. The scandal is the result of numerous investigations, allegations, arrests, trials, convictions and imprisonment of Catholic Priests. It became largely reported that once trusted and respected Catholic Priests were pedophiles. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) categorizes pedophilia as a mental disorder if the sexual fantasies or urges involve prepubescent children , if they last six months or longer, if the individual has acted on them, or if they cause marked distress” (American Psychiatric Association, 2000).
Sexual offence encompasses a wide range of crimes. This makes it tough to identify underlying causes and suggesting measures to prevent. Differing psychological, anthropological and sociological perspectives in the cases of Robert Pickton and Russell Williams show the complexity of the issue. No two sex offenders are alike. According to Schwartz (1995), “sex offenders comprise an extremely heterogeneous population that cannot be characterized by single motivational or etiological factors” (SAPAC) Staying these factors is beyond the scope of this essay. Here we will focus on the two cases referred above and figure out the way they choose their victims and how we can use that information to suggest preventive measures. The essay will also examine the role of media in sexual offences and how media can be helpful in the prevention of such offences.
