Smartphones have had a huge impact on our productivity, health and lifestyle. And it has evolved drastically over the past decade, bringing about several advantages and disadvantages with it. Smartphones are basically computers that fit in our pockets. Just like on a computer, we can browse anything on the go, making it time efficient. Rather than having to wait for the computer to boot up, we can quickly search for something on our smartphones and then carry on with the day. Most smartphones nowadays are also equipped with high resolution cameras, allowing us to take pictures and videos of high quality without having to buy an expensive DSLR camera. This makes smartphones cost-effective and saves the society money, which can then be used for a better lifestyle. Smartphones also have apps for listening to music, through which music may be downloaded or streamed as desired. Thus, saving money that may have been used to buy devices such as an MP3 player. The introduction and development of smartphones have played a significant role in the advancement of technology at emerging regions around the world. In countries such as Africa, where visual communication used to be limited due to high equipment costs and the need for specialized experts, smartphones have supported the expansion of this sector through free apps such as Skype.
Due to advances in technology, smartphone availability and use is far more widespread than in the past. According to a study done by Ericsson[1], Singapore
Smartphones have made a major impact on American society. Twenty years ago, smart phones did not exist and now we cannot go a day without them. The devices have made both positive and negative changes on how we carry out daily activities, how we conduct business and how we communicate.
Phones have changed the way we communicate with each other forever and how we store information ourselves. During the last couple of decades there has been a steady incline of methods allowing information to become more accessible to all people within range such as Wi-Fi or data connection. Although there have been some downsides to this technology such as increased cyber bullying and other confidence issues, the internet and smartphones in general have become vital parts of our lives. At times we even feeling lost without them, phones have become more convenient and it has increased communication and its beneficial having everything in one device.
Cell phones are not just a source of entertainment anymore. The devices are used for a multitude of reasons—they benefit people every day. They assist everyone from adults, to children, to seniors, for whatever their needs may be. Safety, responsibility, and daily processes have been transformed by the additions the phone has brought to one’s daily routine. Others may say that phones bring only dangers and disadvantages to everyday life. The advantages of having a cell phone are unsurmountable compared to the disadvantages of the device.
In the past few years mobile devices have evolved from a luxury item to a necessity item. Since the demand for these devices has increased, more competitors came to the market and the prices were reduced accordingly. As a result new mobile phones are being introduced by the competitors with the latest technologies. Today most of the mobile devices consist with multi-functional capabilities and most of the professions are used mobile devices to manage their work easily.
Everyday people use cell phones. People use their cell phones for a lot of things. Whether it’s for work, for leisure, and even because there’s nothing else better to do. Some people don’t put their phones down for hours, unless they are recommended to or forced to put them down. Some people can’t operate without their cell phones. The average person checks their phone a lot. Numbers vary from as low to 45 all the way up to 110 times a day a person checks their phone. That’s a lot if you think about it. We have 24 hours in a day where we mostly sleep. So, count the hours we are awake we check our phones like 3 or 4 times in an hour. Especially if you are expecting a special call, a special email or text. You might even just stare at the phone until you receive it. People these days don’t know about how hard it used to be to go on the internet and look for stuff. It wasn’t always that simple. Basically, what I’m trying to state in my paper is the pros of a cell phone and cons of cell phones as well. I’m going to tell you advantages and disadvantages of cell phones. I want to aim my paper to the audience of America, to kids everywhere and adults too. I want to state information, facts, and opinions on cell phones. Many problems in the world have or are being caused by cell phones. You could say the world revolves around cell phones just because, so many people have them in their lives. I’m going to give you facts and information from both sides of the topic. I
Almost everyone owns a mobile phone, and the vast majority of these are smartphones. Smartphones help us reach our families and friends in just minutes through text messaging and phone calls or messaging applications. Furthermore, with the use of the internet, it allows us to access websites like Netflix, Pandora or Spotify, or download and play games online, and it enables us to check our e-mails or pay our bills any time and anywhere. However, through mobile devices, we lose our ability to have more in-depth and natural conversations with others, and it is killing the art of communications. Some people revolve around their smartphones to survive throughout the day and others would use smartphones rather than study, socialize in person or connect in the real world.
Smartphone technology has become increasingly affordable and attainable over recent years and has overtaken other electronic devices as a means of connecting with others on the internet. Owning a smartphone has become an expectation amongst younger generations, with up to 95% ownership amongst adults below 40 years old. (Sensis, June 2016). The benefits of this small, versatile device are clear. Smartphones have massively improved quality of life, especially through easing access to social media and information online. Consequently, many people are reliant on this device for daily living with 45% of Australians stating “I can’t live without my mobile phone”. (Roy Morgan Single Source Australia, 2015-2016).
Cell phones have become a shield where individuals can hide behind when they are trying to avoid human interaction. Thus, there is a sense of comfort when one is holding their phone. This becomes troublesome as it takes away from personal connections that could have otherwise been made when one puts down their phone (Lepp, Li, & Barkley, 2016, p. 407). However, there are times where cell phones can be beneficial for maintaining relationships, such as when one cannot meet face-to-face and when one does not have the confidence or language skills to make plans with someone unless done behind a screen (Pierce, 2009, p. 1368; Conti-Ramsden, Durkin, & Simkin, 2010, p. 197). It is important to note, that throughout my observations, especially while memoing and coding I discovered that cell phones were more of a barrier than an opportunity to establish and strengthen relationships. Additionally, the data I found at the University of Windsor in the CAW cafeteria very much resembled two scholarly journal articles: Social Anxiety and Technology and Mobile Voice Communication and Loneliness, which made me appreciate not only the time and effort that was taken to publish these articles, but also my own research experience. In sum, I hope that my work emphasizes the influence that smartphones have in regards to human contact.
Now -a-days mobile phones have become a fundamental part of our daily life. It is very difficult to see people who doesn’t have smartphone. All smartphones use lithium ion batteries which are rechargeable and capable of holding charge for a short time. This issue can be overcome by using batteries made of graphene which can be charged quickly and hold the charge for comparatively longer time compared to Lithium ion batteries. Super capacitors, unlike batteries can be charged quickly but cannot store charge for a long time. Graphene based super capacitors are said to store almost as much energy as Lithium ion batteries, charge and discharge in seconds and maintain all this over tens of thousands of charging cycles.

PC magazine defines a smartphone as “the greatest tech revolution since the Internet” (PCmag). Smartphones have combined many functions that used to be performed by multiple devices all into one. Smartphone users have the ability to navigate directions through the phones GPS system, surf the web any time they want right from their device, play music, take pictures, record video, text message friends and family members, and make phone calls.
In today’s world, cell phones are the main source of communication. It is rare to come by people who do not have one. Whether they have the latest smart phone, or a simple flip phone, cell phone has become a necessity. Today cell phones are capable of more than just simply phone calls. Cell phones provide the luxuries of the Internet, text and picture messaging, and media. With the Internet, mobile phone users are able to browse the web and post on social media. Text and picture messaging allows users to have group chats and quiet conversations. Through media, cell phone users can listen to music, capture photos and videos, and also record.
