Frankly, this isn’t a social media problem. This is a problem with people not being secure enough in their own lives to be able to be happy for others. Social media doesn’t cause depression or anxiety, envy and low self esteem are what causes people to feel this way about social media. Being envious of other people’s lifestyle has been a problem way before social media began to rise, but it’s just now becoming more apparent because of the ability to voice it to the entire world with a click of a button. Regardless of many people being able to relate to this problem, this behavior shouldn’t ever be one that is accepted or justified. Luckily, if you are one of these people who experience this #FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), social media platforms come with the option to block, unfollow, and hide content as well as people. On the flip side, social media does open up the door for cyber-bullying. Because you aren’t talking to a person face to face, people can feel a sense of detachment from their words and find it easier to say whatever they want because they feel there are no consequences. This is especially apparent within celebrities. “Haters” and “Trolls” are common terms to describe people who spend their time on the internet hating on others. Although this is a very reasonable argument for why social media can be dangerous, it is weakened by the fact that there are tools in place to prevent
It has become extremely common for an individual to sign into their Facebook account, and see a picture that they feel exposed a little too much. Check into their Instagram account, and regret letting everyone know what their location was. Feel uncomfortable, or bullied by a tweet that a person posted to their Twitter. Per Farheen’s article on negative effects of social media “participating in social media sites such as these can make you feel more connected” (Sagheer 1). It is not okay for individuals to feel victimized due to the negative effects of social media. Social media tends to distract, humiliate, and destroy one-self through entertainment. If people would donate more time to things more supplemental to their growth, and limit their use of social media, then maybe people would stop walking over the harm that social media presents to our community. Monitoring the time invested into social media will help eliminate most of the detriment, privacy issues, and bullying flowing through today’s society.
Social media has revolutionized the world in many different ways. Popular websites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are used by millions of people every day, and even the most remote place in the world have access to internet use. From contacting your friends and family to finding an old friend from high school, social media has become an essential tool of communication. People can share information, communicate ideas, interact with one another and engage in different activities by just clicking in their computer or simply opening an app on your phone. All of these benefits of social media sound really great when is used in a positive way. However, the use of social media is not perceived the same way by everyone. The question is, is social media good or bad for our society.
Social media can also lead to an unrealistic idea of life. Many people like to show off on social media, for example, showing off money or a new expensive car. When it comes to unrealistic ideas of living it could make people feel envious and jealous. Some people can become obsessed with taking selfies or overly “perfect” pictures, whether it be editing out imperfections or spending an hour trying to get the perfect picture. People can get anxiety from the fear of missing out. When people post about going put every weekend or about how perfect” their lives are, it can make people feel depressed. It can also show unrealistic body standards and lead to eating disorders. A website called National Eating Disorders (2016) has said, “Numerous correlational and experimental studies have linked exposure to the thin ideal in mass media to body dissatisfaction, internalization of the thin ideal, and disordered eating among women”. For example, the social media website

Social media has become prominent parts of life for many young people today. Furthermore, Social media can also lead to brain disorders and can cause people to have a hard time interacting with people face to face. “Social networking entices people to spend more time online and less time talking to a person face to face.” (“ProCon”)
Social media is a big distraction from reality. When looking through social media feed, the posts of friends and family are viewed, and seeing all of those posts about friends having the time of their lives makes the viewer feel left out and isolated. Seeing family members post showing happier more successful lives makes feelings of envy arise. It makes life feel more of a disappointment, and more feelings like misery and depression come about. With unhappiness and depression, users go back online to distract themselves, only making things worse. Social media users isolate themselves with these applications and makes them socialize less with friends and family. "According to a new paper published in the American Journal of

The rise of technology has shaped our generation in so many ways. As a child, I remember going to the library and checking out books when I had a paper or project due for class. As I got older the need for finding books or publications for research purposes decreased considerably. As I entered middle school, a class was being taught on computer literacy, and looking back on that class I see how important it was to get started early. I can only recall one time in the last three years where I stepped foot into a public library, and that was to place my vote for the 2016 presidential election. The fact that I can hop on my phone, and search anything I could possibly want to know about, and that information be displayed in a matter of seconds is an amazing and wonderful thing. The downside to the capability of information at your fingertips is that it causes people (including myself) to be lazy. Vocabulary and literacy levels are lower now, because you don’t have to read several books to find what you are looking for. I loved reading for pleasure when I was younger, and still do, but that was because I was required to read more to find answers to questions. Siri and Google have almost eliminated the need to do such research.
The new generations of children are relying more and more on phones and their electronic devices. The average teen spends more than 6 hours glued to social media every day (Tsukayama). Our population loves this new phenomenon of social media where you can have a personality on the web and can get to know people without having to physically talk to them. As the use of social media has bloomed significantly, the media industry has become more competitive with new sites popping up and new features being added regularly. Social media has shown incredible growth over the years since websites such as Facebook and Twitter were first introduced around 2006. For many people, social media is readily available at one’s fingertips. Therefor, when it comes to public safety, forward-thinking government agencies are beginning to look at social media as a support tool for improved situational awareness. Even though the advantages of social media and emergency situations are frequently discussed, the disadvantages are equally prevalent. For this reason, it is important to note that with the introduction and integration of recent technology, the drawbacks need to be properly addressed and controlled. The way the public can interact and communicate through social media is one of the major disadvantages to public safety communications and emergency situations.
