Distance Learning
Currently, computers already play a prominent role in many aspects of our lives from personal works to education fields. The Internet can also be invaluable in linking people culturally and socially (Hacker & Capehart, 1999). Geographically and historically, most universities in the world offer distance learning to students through the Internet, and the distance learning is becoming a new trend of the 21st academy. In particular, computers will permit a degree of individualization-personalized coaching or tutoring (Gardner, 2000: 31). Through easily accessible teaching communication online, distance learning comes to replace our support problems in traditional campus learning. The distance learning is an educational

Those who don’t want to waste hours hanging around on campus can use flexible schooling on the Internet. For instance, according to Lehrer’s study (1998), one of ITT’s students can take care of her family and do her studying before her child wakes up. In addition, currently many campuses have developed online education course work. Some of them offer distance education for their students during summer or vacation, not in regular semester. The Standford University offers 30 courses designed for a master degree in teaching English and is geared toward employed professionals. Thus, the slogan of distance learning “learning anytime, anywhere, at any rate (Uhlig, 2002:672)” is a main advantage in online education. With the help of advanced technology, students not only get lectures from a computer monitor in real time but also choose the time of day that they would like to participate in the course.
Another strength of the distance learning is the collaboration between the instructor and students. According to Hofmann (2002), some tools or programs such as bulletin boards, chat rooms, electronic mail, and white boards all encourage students to communicate with their instructor and each other. Online communication brings students’ broad and interesting opinions into the class bulletin without any hesitation or anxiety. Those who have high anxiety about face-to-face talk or communication in front
The film Higher Learning is a call to action. It is a film that shows people as products of their environment. The film is set on a college campus, a place where most people learn about what they will do in their adult life to try to better the world or simply educate themselves in order to live a better life. However, life on the Columbus campus is not good; it is a battlefield between the races and sexes. I feel it is a bit exaggerated, but it allows people to see some of the issues that go on, on a college campus. The film focuses on three freshman (Malik, Kristen, & Remy) entering college. They enter a less than ideal new world that is filled with tension, anxiety and fear. Although the writer uses stereotypical characters, it
This essay will discuss how my use of online information has grown from being merely a consumer, to now being able to critically evaluate online sources for credibility and suitability for use in academic work. My role in producing an online informational resource has been enhanced by both the readings, and the experience gained in the collaborative process involved in working as a team. This is my first experience at online collaboration and I will examine the challenges encountered using this medium of communication, how I dealt with them, the lessons learned, and what I would do differently during future collaborative work.
We, as humans, fear the unknown, and change is after often at the root of our fears. One of the greatest catalysts for change is today’s rapid technological development, but the concept of traditional education has always been the same. Even that is changing, and as to be expected, there is a substantial amount of fear and apprehension towards distance education. With this, students are presented the chance to overcome of a
“Can You Be Educated from a Distance,” an insightful essay by James Barszcz, brings to focus some of the benefits and disadvantages of Distance Learning education (DL). In it, Barszcz discusses the mechanics of DL courses available to students, the quality of education DL can offer, and some reasoning behind its rapidly growing popularity. “Can You Be Educated from a Distance” is an engaging article that students of all ages can benefit from.
Online degrees are becoming an ever more trendy method to receive a college education and many students are switching to online education due to the quality of material, ease, and the level of flexibility in distance education programs. Recently, the internet has developed into a reliable capital of information for college seekers. Everything from applying for financial assistance to taking a course can be done online. Now, a student can even obtain online degrees from one of many schools offering online education as a practical choice to a traditional classroom education. There’s a load of information regarding online education, and distance education is becoming increasingly popular for students everywhere.
Distance learning (education) has become an integral part of the education process over the past few decades and is growing in popularity as technology advances.(Willis 1992) describes distance education (as) "the organizational framework andprocess of providing instruction at a distance. Distance education takes place when ateacher and student(s) are physically separated, and technology…(is) used to bridge theinstruction gap." (Coutts 1996). Furthermore, "distance learning activities are designedto fit the specific context for learning, the nature of the subject matter; intended learningoutcomes, needs and goals of the learner, the learner's environment and the instructional echnologies and methods." (American
However, advocates of classroom learning believe the online method isolates the students from one another as well as their professor minimizing the overall value of taking the course. They also claim that students learn better when working together with their instructor and their fellow classmates. Students learn better when they are given the opportunity to ask questions, join in class discussions, and they move the process of learning forward through their participation. Face-to-face advocates firmly believe that this kind of interaction is not possible over the Internet; and for many types of education, e-learning will never meet the potential of live human interaction in the classroom. An article in the New York Times titled, “Second Thoughts on Online Education,” backs up the points made above. A recent research published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, comes to the conclusion; “A rush to online education
Non-traditional students are finding it easier and easier to maintain a job, a family, and pursuing a college career at the same time. This is possible because more and more non-traditional students are receiving an education using distance learning, as opposed to traditional, in-the-classroom teaching. Distance learning is basically taking college level, credit-bearing courses via the Internet. One of the most obvious advantages of distance learning is that it puts the classroom in your home, office, or wherever you can find a computer and log on to the Internet. However, there is much controversy regarding the quality of the courses being offered on the Internet versus the quality of
E-learning has come to dominate the strategic thinking of employers over the past decade in several countries. Only in recent years in India, there has been focus on e-learning, this is due to the recent development in MNC, BPO and IT concerns. This is widely seen due to the connected economy, become intangible and fast growing among organizations. Due to emerging MNC’s, globalisation has become one of the most important criteria to increase flexibility of communications, and hence become vital among the organization. Despite the emphasis on e-learning and large investments made on training it is still not clear and ongoing success have not yet been recognized, due to the ongoing structural changes among managements. The problem in
Distance learning for post graduation courses has become a common phenomenon of today. Most of the people are opting for distance learning as they are busy in their routine work. Some may pursue a regular job, some busy in handling their own business or some may even consider pursuing their own interests like photography, painting etc along with continuing their further studies for their own career improvement. If a student wants to pursue distance learning he must not just go on for any random institute, but in fact he should opt for those institutes which are affiliated to provide a genuine degree after completion of the course.

Education is an important part of life since it gives us knowledge of the world around, paves the way for a worthy career, and makes a man complete. Unfortunately, in some part of the world, education is not readily accessible that made the number of people in the world do not have a chance to go to school. For instance, in Africa, according to the USAID Center reports that as of 2005, “40% of school-age children in Africa do not attend primary school and there are still 46 million school-age African children who have never stepped into a classroom.” Moreover, politics play a significant part in fanning the flames of extremism, but widespread poverty, high unemployment rates, and a lack of equal educational opportunities for girls are also important elements. In addition, the traditional classes are not “one-size-fits-all” for everyone. For example, some students in the class said that they feel bored and stressed out when going to school. On the other hand, other students feel timid when discussing the problems in face-to-face lecture, perhaps they feel more comfortable through emails, or discuss lessons on the online web like Canvas, Etude, etc. Nowadays, accompany with the improvement of technology, we can perceive that ever more people choose online education as the valuable opportunity for people as it gives everyone all over the world a chance to deserve a high-quality education, actively manage schedules, and master the schoolings. Without a doubt, the growth of
Education is an important part of people’s lives; it will either make them or break them in the future depending on the careers they choose. Education is greatly diverse today in comparison to the 1950s because of advancements in teaching and other great inventions that provide easier techniques of teaching. One major issue that has been raised is distant learning courses and online education.
Online distant learning programs help make the easy connection of students in a program connect to the more accessible home environment in a simple way. Students are now given the option of getting their education and making their own schedules, without going through a second person in an easy more efficient way. Consequently, to succeed in online courses and programs the student must have good time management, a computer or laptop, and internet connection. Also online distant learning programs are subjectively done through monologue, not our dialogue; having been previously filmed and then posted on the internet stating course information, not caring about the viewers, or if the
Online teaching is defined as any educational activity that requires a student to complete some learning or assessment activity via a personal computer and a connection to a network (Murdoch University Academic Council 1999). This network connection is usually to the Internet (Demirdjian 2002). It is a seen by the Murdoch University Academic Council as a teaching and learning technology, not a method of study (2002), but this depends on how it is to be used and by whom. For example, distance education student using online teaching would be more inclined to see it as a study method than a QUT student who uses online teaching to download and print lecture notes to attend a lecture on campus.
