I believe it is important to understand our Diverse America so that we can make the correct political decisions that brings everyone's opinions into thought. We need to also be able to respect each other’s cultures, and ethnicity. Some discrimination could be due to the fact that we just don’t understand the people, and are quite scared of them, just because they are different to what we are used to seeing. Exposing ourselves to different types of people lets us be more comfortable in our own country. Everyone should be able to feel comfortable with everyone else, not being aware of their background shouldn’t be a
The information that I have learned about diversity in the United States of America has helped me better understand and relate to others in many ways. The United States of America is a giant melting pot of several different races, ethnicities, and cultures. What I have learned is that each group has their differences and similarities. With these differences in culture they have taught me how to be tolerant and accepting of them no matter how different from me they appear. By accepting the differences in our diverse society I have learned new thoughts and ideas of living, different perspectives of thinking, and have been introduced to a variety of foods that I have never tried before. All in all, it seems in
America is greatly influenced and enhanced by the many versatile cultures which inhabit it. Cultural diversity has added to our economy in such a way that it brings innovated ideas and contact structures throughout the world. International cuisines have come to America through subcultures, have expanded the food industry, and have allowed English Americans to try new foods and flavors. Immigrants have brought with them religious values that greatly differ and vary from those at which were natural in the main stream American culture. The educational development through foreign nationals has led America, as a nation, to excel and be deemed one of the most intelligent nations in the world! Consequently, the subcultures have kept our
The diversity and location of NC State is what draws me to this University. From the first moment I stepped onto the campus, to the tours and talking to current students, I felt the excitement of the campus. NC State is a rich community that is strong because of the variety of classes, teachers, students, and activities, and for the array of perspectives and experiences. From attending a small school in a small town, then transitioning to a larger high school, this feels like a natural next step.
Diversity exists all across the United States. It is defined as the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary. Along with the ever-growing diversity in America, brings along intercultural communication. Intercultural communication can be defined as a situated communication between individuals or groups of different linguistic and cultural origins. Due to the limitless amounts of diversity and intercultural communication across the United States, misunderstandings and clashes between cultures are bound to occur. These clashes have been as extreme to be used to explain violence and crime not only in the United States, but also throughout our entire nation. On the other end, these cultural clashes can be so personal in our everyday lives because of our expectations of a certain behavior coming from our own cultural backgrounds, as many others have very different cultural backgrounds and expectations of us.
Race is an integral part of identity in the United States of America. Race has become a norm for many individuals, although biologically race is not a real thing. After reading “How to kill yourself and Others in America”, the problems of race become more clear and noticeable in society today. Even though many Americans believe that they live in a post-racial society, this is far from the truth. Race is still a problem is many places in America (this can be seen in some recent events with the police). From what I can see race doesn’t seem to be as much of a problem in Albion, but it still is an issue. Race is a major factor in America, and it seems to be killing America, as Kiese Laymon points out multiple times in his book.
Part 1: Write an essay elaborating the development of race in America. How did American ideas about race, form and develop through the year 1877?
Diversity can refer to many things all over the world. Diversity can be defined as different statuses at are together collectively. “Diversity encompasses complex differences and similarities in perspective, identities and points of view among members if an institution. It includes important and interrelated dimensions of human identity such as race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, socio-economic status, nationality, citizenship, religion, sexual orientation, ability and age.” (“Luther College”) In conclusion, diversity is a group of different individuals that are grouped together; focus word being “different” and “together”. Diversity is very important at any setting because it challenges the way people think, it result in an effective way of analyzing thing because there are different perspectives that are being thought of. Therefore, diversity on college campuses in the United States is important because it increases academic and social interactions.
In the USA one of the most diverse place on earth, one would think that cultural diversity would not be an issue that needed to be addressed or be an issue at all. Right? I mean this country is probably the only place on earth where you can find nearly any nationality, ethnicity and type of people living among each other. You have Blacks, Chinese, gays, lesbians, transgender people, whites, Europeans, Africans, Middle Eastern people, Asians, and Hispanics, all on one piece of land. How can cultural diversity be a problem when the land is made up of so many different types of people? Shouldn't cultural diversity be striving in America? Unfortunately, in many parts of the USA, cultural diversity is lacking. Some of the many places that cultural diversity is lacking in the US is television, movies, the workplace, and schools. If you ever watched a movie or a TV show you mostly see one type of group being represented. For example, let's look some TV shows that take place in NYC. Let's look at friends, Seinfeld, Will and Grace, Sex and The City and How I Meet Your Mother, these shows
Television still doesn’t completely represent the diversity in America. Roughly three-quarters of film actors were white in 2014. There was only 12.5% African American, 5.3% Asian, and 4.9% Hispanic actors while there was 73.1% white actors. Studies also show the majority of actors are male. According to the annual 100 top grossing films 2007-2014 only 30.2% of speaking or named characters were women, while 73.1% were male whites.
He didn’t know until it had happened. His arm was completely trapped under a rock that had tumbled down after he fell through the crevasse. He was standing on a stable enough ledge, but his arm incapacitated his movement, and he could feel the blooding dripping down his forehead from a gash he received during the fall. Thankfully, he still had his backpack on, but since his arm was immobilized under the rock, he knew he had to cut the backpack off his body. He pulled out his water bottle; it was only half full. The camera he took on his hikes was still intact and working, and he had many tools in his backpack that could be useful: a Swiss army knife, some rope, and a couple of granola bars. He was still in shock and the pain had not yet reached
I grew up in a family without much diversity, both of my parents are African American but my father is half Cuban. Growing up diversity wasn't something that was talked about; it was better to fit, to conform. My family isn't the most accepting to things that are different so they normally talked down about people who are overweight, gay or just people that didn't look or dress like them. I didn't understand that growing up and I just followed what my parents did and said even though I disagreed with it.
It is important to understand our diversity in America because not everyone here believes or lives with the same standards. What may seem acceptable in one location, may be considered rude or offensive in another. It is also beneficial to be more knowledgeable of other people’s culture and how they interact among each other to create healthy relationships with new people. Learning about another person’s situation can also help you understand them and think less negative about others due to stereotypes. As humans we thrive when we come together, you will find that we have more in common than we do have of
Diversity has been observed in different parts of the world especially the Unites States. Seemingly the country harbors different variations of people. The people are living in the US vary in terms of their cultures, norms, beliefs, behaviors and religions. Such variations make them lead unique lives from one another. The clip ‘Diversity and inclusion- Love has no labels’ vividly recounts about the issue of variation and the challenges accompanying the people living in a diverse society. The US has different cultural groups such as the Latinos, Blacks, Whites, and other races. Marginalized groups find the challenge of failing to get equal opportunities in life as their counterparts. Education, employment, and
In the United States, we are going through a tough transition period. We are moving on from old energy to new energy and from conservative traditions to new ones. It is good to know that many in the country acknowledge the times with a belief of an inclusive America. In the same fashion, some celebrities speak out about racial issues that continue to divide out country as they fight for equality for all races. Our country is there yet, but individuals with huge platforms who use it to speak in favor of diversity, it can help our country get to that point. An influential figure can convince countless people to become more accepting of the changing country that becomes better for all Americans.
To me diversity is the interaction between a group of people who come from all regions of the world and accept each other for being different. Interacting with someone who comes from a different background and has distinct ideas than your own, creates an exciting environment when joining forces to meet a common goal.
