Awareness building “sensitizes employees to the assumptions they make about others and the way those assumptions affect their behaviors, decisions, and judgment” (Bateman & Snell, 2013, pg. 218). It is apparent to the astute observer, that Robert’s company is void of a formal diversity awareness program. If such a program existed, then Paul’s department of three years would not be all Caucasian. However, Robert takes action to correct his company’s course through the hiring of Jacqueline. Robert, as the senior manager, used the interview process to highlight a blind area in Paul’s leadership. Robert lays it out to Paul, “You were really very open and gregarious with Sonya. You weren’t to that level with Jacqueline” (McGraw-Hill, (n.d.), Manager’s
When I think of diversity in America, I think that this is what makes America what it is. Over the course of this class, I have realized that America was founded on diversity. Different cultures immigrated to this country so that they could escape religious persecution and worship freely. Over time, this country was known as a safe haven for those looking to have their diverse cultures and religions respected individually. Although there are those who discriminate against others for these things, people still have the right to express their cultures and religions freely. Before taking this class, I only noticed how far we had to go, and now I see how far we have already come.
According to an opinion widely held, homosexuality is said to be freer today than ever before. It is present and visible everywhere: in the street, in the newspapers, on television, at the movies. It is even supposedly completely accepted, judging by the recent legislative advances made in many countries for the recognition of same sex couples. Certainly, some work remains necessary in order to eradicate the last vestiges of discrimination. But with changing public opinion, it will only be, according to some people, a matter of time, the time needed for a movement begun many decades earlier to achieve its goals.
Government and other corporations can make use of diversity training to all employees who deal widely with the with the public. Diversity training more than only recognizing that people come different social background. The major key factor in addressing diversity is by knowing that people have different ways of communication and this a result of varied social backgrounds for instance in some culture(Laurence 2016). It is wrong, or it is considered impolite to look at the politician direct into the eyes while addressing them, but in other culture it is opposite of the same situation. This clearly indicates that it’s very easy to misunderstand what a person was
Minority cultural groups may also find ethnocentrism amongst an organizations cultural majority group to be a barrier. Ethnocentrism is found to be widespread and universal. It can be classified as group level prejudice in cultural minority groups. “Ethnocentricity is the inclination for majority-group members to view their own group as the center of the universe, to interpret minority out groups from the perspective of the majority group and to evaluate beliefs, behaviors and values of one’s own majority group more positively than out groups” (Shimp & Sharma, 1987 as cited in White, n.d., p.474).
1. What are the dimensions of cultural diversity? Identify and briefly explain the dimensions by referencing both textbooks.
The student has autonomy over who he shares his sexuality with. He is not obligated to tell his coaches but he does have the right to not be subjected to the innuendoes from his coaches. I must assure his confidentiality. Because the student brought it to my attention, it requires beneficence on my part to address the language used by the athletic department. It would be nonmaleficence of me to not address the issue. I contribute to maintaining an environment where all students feel safe and free from harm. I will make a plan of action to promote further diversity awareness for all students and staff. Even though the issue has only been brought up by one student, I know it cannot be an isolated one. As part of the district yearly staff development,
This diversity audit begins with a background about the company, as well as some important information about key Diversity executives. What will be addressed in the audit are what efforts Johnson & Johnson made to foster diversity competence and understand, what efforts were made in furthering the knowledge or awareness about diversity, what strategies were used to address the challenges of diversity and how will you ensure that your leaders and managers will be committed to the diversity initiative. Ross states that "the first step toward cultural competency requires senior leadership to commit time, financial resources, and corporate priority to shape the organizational culture to reward respect and trust, develop role models, incubate new policies and practices, and create new forms of recognition and acknowledgment of the benefits of respecting differences among people, as well as to reach an increasingly diverse customer base," (Ross 2011).
This article is about how several student organizations coordinated to host a gathering sharing their
In today’s workforce there are more of a diverse variety of people than ever before. Among these people we all have to learn to respect, appreciate, and tolerate each other’s way of life. Everyone is different in their own way and we all should know that by now. I personally think it is an advantage to having all these different types of cultures in the workplace. In having this it allows everyone to see different sides and objections to a topic or idea.
Finally, I made some plans to improve myself as an effective member in the future. As a nurse, it is essential to learn more about how to deal with diversity, because in my future work place diversity is unavoidable. Hereafter, I will try to enrich my knowledge and skills in dealing with diversity and also I will practice how to manage diversity as in the groups of other courses when I interact with other people from different cultural back grounds. In fact, this experience of effective team work would be helpful in my future work place, to minimize adverse events caused by miscommunication with others caring for the patient and misunderstanding of their roles and responsibilities.
After taking both quizzes, I am not surprised that I scored low on both quizzes. However, I thought I would have gotten a higher score on the Equity & Diversity Awareness quiz. However, I scored same for both quizzes. I thought I knew more information regarding the Equity & Diversity, since I took a class back at the Community college that expresses of Equity and Diversity around us. Some of the questions that I thought it was interesting was questions regarding a study in 2007, UNICEF rated the treatment of children in the 23 wealthiest countries in the world based on 40 indicators of child well-being. I was shocked that the United States and the U.K.were the two lowest rates. I haven't taught that we would been the lowest rates within treatment
Welcome to this year’s national convention! I would like to thank all of you for coming tonight, but I would especially like to thank Professor Akers for organizing and planning this event. Tonight, we will be discussing communication and behavior issues in leading a diverse work culture. Did you know that non-white workers now make up nearly one-third of the labor force (Burns, 2012)? Statistics too boring to keep your attention? How about this: “Racially diverse teams outperform their non-diverse counterparts by 35 percent (Woolf, 2017). Do I have your attention know? As you can see, diversity in the workplace doesn’t have to be a requirement just to meet government regulations and ethical expectations. There are tremendous implications for your business. Unfortunately, there are several issues possible plaguing and inhibiting your business in regard to diversity. We will discuss the most predominate issue, communication and communication behaviors.
Diversity training is defined as a different set of plans intend to eliminating or decreasing discrimination, facilitating with assisting positive team’s communication and improving the skills, abilities, awareness, knowledge, and motivation of workers to interact with diverse members supporting self- disclosure and Intergroup communication. Not sure, why we don’t have one. Personally, I believe that all organizations would benefit from a diversity awareness program. At the hospital we provide care for severally mentally ill kids. In short, a few years ago, our company accepted a contract with the FED’s. This contract allows us to house up to 21 illegal youth immigrants. Many of the kids, had escaped their country, were on the run and were captured by immigration or other officials. We had no training. There was already a huge communication barrier. But many of the staff had no clue how to interact with these new patients. The contract included its own staff of case managers and therapist (Spanish speakers). However, there was no dialogue with the day to-day staff that had to work
