There is no doubt that weak ties promote diversities, nevertheless, weak ties are not tight enough to motivate students to get involved in the college community. Nathan states that “Part of that diversity ideal is the hope that all student will develop friends and have important conversations with those of backgrounds and ethnicities different from their own”(324). Social media, like Facebook and twitter, provides a platform where students are able to express their opinions freely and share their daily life with friends, with classmates whom they have little or no acquaintance with, and even with people with different backgrounds and cultures. Making friends on U.S. campuses could be challenging for those who are an international students. It’s not easy to make friends with American students because they tend to be independent and keep distance from others. In Rebekah Nathan’s book “My Freshman Year”, Nathan claims that social life and developing friendships on U.S. campuses is difficult for international students because American students would make them feel uncomfortable and invisible at times. Nathan’s argues that American students don’t put any effort in talking to students from different race, ethnic, and background. Today, anyone can rekindle old flames with social media or update their status to keep distant friends close at heart. Somehow, Maggie Jackson sees facilitated communication as “clashing streams of rapid-fire imagery, floating in limitless cyber-worlds” that loosen any grip on intimacy (546). It’s understandable that face to face moments are deemed an essential aspect of connectivity. Still, a digital barrier seems minute in many circumstances. Every year college students drift far from home in the pursuit of higher education. For most, leaving family behind is extremely difficult and can even hinder the way a student manages emotions. With powerful tools like Skype and instant messaging, communication isn’t so difficult. Although looking at a screen isn’t “the real thing”, it allows people to feel closer and connected. A few glances at funny pics of mom or a second to see what a friend posted about their life back home can give a feeling of comfort to those that need it. This is progress. This is proof of successful innovation. Yes, focus is briefly split into “alternative virtual universes” but the benefits of cyber-mingling far outweigh the small cost of attention (Jackson 547). Prior to analyzing the data for this study, I hypothesized that students who identified as a non-white race would have a friendship network most similar to, if not precisely considered, “Tight-Knitter.” The sample for this study included ten students from the University of Rhode Island, a public university with an overwhelming white student body. Based on the school’s Office of Institutional Research, 71% of the enrolled students were white; while 9% were Hispanic, 5% were black, and 4% were Asian. Without question, the state’s flagship research institution has a predominately white campus. Perhaps students who are non-white find it easier to traverse the less-than-diverse campus if they are friends with a group of students who are all close and friends with one another, and therefore, considered a “Tight-Knitter” friendship network.

The article, “Social Media as Community,” written by Keith Hampton, indicates the average social network users had more intimate connections than those that did not. Social media allows people to connect with others from a variety of backgrounds. It gives people a chance from all over the country to connect with one another in seconds, instead of days. Coming from a small town community where there is only a single stoplight and everyone personally knows each other, diversity is not something that is experienced every day. Every year since kindergarten I have been going to school with the same group of friends who share the same socio-economic status as me and the only real diversity that the school has to offer is the one or two foreign exchange students that it is able to bring in for that year. Simply being put diversity is not present in everyday life for most of my classmates.

My goal with the diversity grants is not just to enrich my personal knowledge, but looking at ways to bring more diversity to the transfer student population. For AA it is confounding low. Our program can serve as a beacon for underrepresented transfers and I always have an eye towards that goal in hiring, training and structure.
For many years, Americans have held certain opinions concerning gender, sex, women, and sexual orientation. A definition of both gender and sex will be provided. The roles of women throughout American history will be discussed. When people think about masculinity and femininity, they have certain preconceived ideas. How these ideas contribute to the understanding gender, sex, and sexual orientation will be examined. Finally, the status of GLBT individuals will be explored. An increased understanding will be gained concerning these issues.
Equal Opportunity Leaders Course (EOLC) is a course that focuses on giving soldiers a voice. EOLC teaches noncommissioned officers and officers to empower even the lowest ranking soldier to speak up if they are being discriminated against based on the six categories of discrimination. Throughout this course, I learned many valuable lessons, but the most important exercise we did was called the badge exercise. During this exercise, we wrote out three categories. The first category was “who I am” basic background information. The second category was “characteristics” what makes us unique individuals. Finally, the third section was values. Social network sites (SNSs) such as such as Friendster, CyWorld, and MySpace allow individuals to present themselves, articulate their social networks, and establish or maintain connections with others (Ellison, 2007). These sites could be used for work related situation, romance, connecting with individuals with shared interest, or creating a connection amongst college students. Facebook enables its users to present themselves in an online profile, accumulate ‘‘friends’’ who can post comments on each other’s pages, and view each other’s profiles (Ellison, 2007). Individuals can write on the wall of friends, send private message, comment on posts, as well as chat via instant messaging. Much of the early research on online communities assumed that individuals using these systems would be connecting with others outside their pre-existing social group or location, liberating them to form communities around shared interests, as opposed to shared geography (Ellison, 2007).
We live in a society where people come from different countries, they belong to different cultural, religion, ethnic groups, and races. All these factors come together and contributes to differences that make us unique from each other. Hence, a multicultural country with huge diversity. This reflection journal will cover what “human race” is and what role it plays in ones’ personal life and in a nursing profession.
