Diversity includes knowing how to relate to those qualities and conditions that are different from our own and outside the groups to which we belong, yet are present in other individuals and groups. These include but are not limited to age, ethnicity, class, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, sexual orientation, as well as religious status, gender expression, educational background, geographical location, income, marital status, parental status, and work experiences. I believe diversity is not just acknowledging and enduring differences, but understanding and appreciating that everyone has a right to believe and behave however they choose; as long as it does not harm anyone, any animal, the environment, or go against the laws of humanity. It is important to recognize that acceptance of diversity among individuals provides equality to all because prejudice and discrimination creates disadvantages and thwarts opportunities.
Before attending Rhodes State College, my view of diversity was limited to acknowledging and enduring differences among people. I did not try to understand, let alone appreciate, the various perspectives that different beliefs and behaviors provide. I believed that as long as I treated everyone fairly and did not judge that I was not being prejudiced against those who were different from me.

Growing up, I had a basic understanding of diversity and the importance of inclusivity. Before attending the University of Maryland, I only considered race and gender when thinking of diversity since those are two of my own identities. Living in residence halls and getting involved in extra curricular activities, my self-awareness and understanding of other identities increased.

Observing these individuals allowed me the opportunity to explore how diversity is perceived from a small sample of the campus. I believe, a college campus is the perfect setting to view the hop topic called diversity. The population at JSU includes people from various countries, social economic backgrounds, class, gender, occupations, and sexual-orientation. According to the Webster dictionary, diversity entails the quality or state of having different forms, types, and ideas about something. • Diversity is about acknowledging your prejudices, allowing people to be different and respecting these differences. It is also about challenging others if necessary and speaking up for the individuals you support when they cannot speak up for themselves. For example, an care home will have different service users, with different background, culture, language and with different needs and level of support.
As an undergraduate McNair Scholar I wrote a paper on diversity in higher education, I was fortunate to have that paper published and I presented that paper at several conferences. The paper led to one university funding more culturally relevant events for African-Americans, along with the development of a Black Student organization. Through my experiences I have learned that diversity is more than just numbers, it is a culture. No two people have the exact same experiences, we all are diverse. However, if we foster a diverse and inclusive environment, everyone will feel a sense of belonging.
Prior to taking this course I thought I had a clear understanding of what it meant to have diversity awareness. I have been exposed to many different cultures both through my experiences in the Army and as a civilian, however I was not very aware of diversity. Since taking this course I have realized that increasing my awareness in diversity, would greatly benefit me as an Army soldier and as a future Law Enforcement Agent. As a soldier, I interact with different cultures, races, and sexes on a daily basis. I have developed a better sense of understanding in how other cultures may interact. As a future Law Enforcement, having a better sense of diversity awareness, would prevent me from becoming too stereotypical of other cultures. Throughout this course I have been introduced to diversity in a way I never would have imagined. I’m more cautious before casting judgment about the way I view people and the way people interact.
