Diversity in the Workplace As stated in our book, workplace diversity is defined as “diversity at work means having a workface comprised of two or more groups of employees with various racial, ethic, gender, cultural, national origin, handicap, age, and religious backgrounds”. There are many positives and also negatives of diversity in the workplace. Some of the negatives from workplace diversity are stereotyping, discrimination, tokenism, ethnocentrism, and also gender- role stereotypes. Target maintains diversity in a much different than the other two companies we have discussed, because they are in a retail environment it makes it much more difficult. Target is improving its diversity management with a strong focus on talent development. They have a very strong mentoring program which has been a model for other diversity orientated businesses. Target was named Top Company for Mentoring by DiversityInc, last year. Target’s statement of diversity is "At Target, diversity is much more than a goal or campaign. It’s a core value we integrate into every area of our business—from our suppliers, to our teams, to the shopping experience in our stores. We foster an inclusive culture that allows our high-performing and diverse team to drive innovation" according to their corporate website. This statement of diversity shows how important this issue is to Target, they even extend it to their suppliers and to their customers, for a better shopping experience. This is significant to me because it shows they are always striving to be better and more innovative, that they aren’t just worried about corporate profits but that they want to actually make the lives of their employees and customers better. These are reasons I picked Target off of this last and continue to shop there and not stores like Wal-Mart. Target uses strategies mentioned by the book as being a Top-Down diversity program and also having very strict Equal Employment
Diversity is a wonderful asset to an organization and brings with it many benefits. Employees bring in their own personal experiences and knowledge to the team (Burns & Kerby, 2012). Having diverse teams allows for the possibility to fix a problem or perfect a process by using different employee’s experiences and past knowledge to find solutions. A diverse workforce can drive economic growth and capture a greater share of the consumer market (Burns & Kerby, 2012). With diversity as a core value, the recruitment pool is widened to find the most qualified candidate and reduces employee turnover as a result. An organization can be highly competitive with a diversity initiative by adapting to a changing environment (Burns & Kerby, 2012).
Workplace diversity is when there is diverse culture of individuals in the workplace. It is when there is a value placed on the variety of ideas, race, ethnicities, religion, gender, sexuality and orientation, which is flourishing in an environment. Depending on your employer and workplace, workplace diversity can vary based off several different factors. Usually, there is a preferential standpoint taken on the matter and it can be either display a high or a low context culture of diversity. According to Mason (2013) Workforce diversity has been described as “a double-edged sword; it has the potential for positive and negative outcomes” (p.659). Workplace diversity is important in a business setting because it carries forward a combination of different types of people to work together in unity, encourages uniqueness, innovative, creative approaches, and supports interesting divergent ideas to accomplish tasks or goals.
Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organisation. Diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It is an understanding that each individual is unique, and a recognition of our individual differences. These differences can include ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, family status, religious beliefs, perspective, experience, or other ideologies.
I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.

Diversity is present in all aspects of life, its been major topics for cultures forever and helps with all social or cultural probems of diputes. When you have such a huge populations of peopel there are bound to be a lot of differneces and ways of looking at things so ther has to be understanding involved otherwise nothing gets resolved. the key is to be accepting to everytone and never judge anyone regardless of differences. Diversity is extremely importante; in the work place, school, or over all population diversity is the key that unites it all. I think it’s pretty common for people to picture a Caucasian male with a suit and briefcase when picturing someone with some high end cooperate job. We used to be able to blame this on the fact that many different races weren’t getting the same level of education. In these days, with everyone getting equal opportunities in education and more diversity in higher educational institutes, there should be no reason that races aren’t represented more equally when it comes to white collar jobs. Many studies have shown that more diverse economies make for much stronger ones. When businesses can accept the nation’s ever changing demographics, they obtain a more diverse and inclusive workforce which benefits them economically.
Furthermore, the power of context is the things in the environment can change people’s behaviors. This will let them know what kinds of actions are properly doing at what time. Lofferda proposes that some higher level people in the society always do not have good behaviors and take advantages of gays, she states that “the Supreme Court upheld a Cincinnati ordinance that denied gays and lesbians legal protection from discrimination in housing, employment, and other public accommodations” (249). This quote shows that even in higher government, the gays cannot get the same treatment like the housing and employees as the other residents. The surroundings around them are really terrible. They cannot get really benefits and advantages from the society or the government.
I spend the majority of my time in the WeViva office, working very closely with the WeViva staff. I am very fortunate to be working with a group of staff members that are extremely respectful, organized, friendly, and overall professional. I have not encounter any problems with any of them and I do not expect for any conflict to arise in the duration of my internship.
I find it interesting that diversity is such an issue in technology companies. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, the estimated size of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce is expected to increase by 18% in the next ten years, (non-STEM increasing by 12%), reaching to 8.7 million by 2018 alone. Forbes hypothesizes that if current hiring trends continue, STEM jobs will be "largely unavailable" to women and minorities, who combine to make up over half of the U.S. population (Newlands, 2016).
The general line of reasoning is that if we learn to incorporate each other’s diverse traits and characteristics in the workplace, we can then use these differences to foster an innovative environment, which will give the company a competitive advantage over the competitors that do not accept workforce diversity. According to the Allied Academies International Conference, “Diversity is rapidly becoming a common practice among companies due to the increasing number of minorities entering the job market today. As these groups become more prevalent throughout companies, upper-level employees are facing numerous challenges when determining what changes must take place to create a positive working environment for everyone. Management is responsible for the development and implementation of effective policies directly relating to diversity to ensure the acceptance of minorities into the workplace and to aid in minorities’ success through equal opportunities and treatment.” (Marcia L. As companies become more diverse in the work field employees are getting harder to manage and understand. One issue in the global market today is workplace diversity. Workplace diversity has become an important factor in the American marketplace. The demographic composition of many workplaces has become more diverse providing unique opportunities for individuals and organizations (Bond & Haynes, 2014, p. 183). As business leaders have recognized the need for more inclusive work environments, organizations have attempted to respond through development of workforce diversity management programs and placing greater emphasis of the value of diversity in the workplace. The following review of recent literature related to workplace diversity confirms a deliberate focus of organizations to attain a more inclusive work environment, develop approaches to improve a climate of inclusiveness, and concludes that initiatives are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of initiatives aimed to promote a diverse workforce.
