Diversity in the Workplace As stated in our book, workplace diversity is defined as “diversity at work means having a workface comprised of two or more groups of employees with various racial, ethic, gender, cultural, national origin, handicap, age, and religious backgrounds”. There are many positives and also negatives of diversity in the workplace. Some of the negatives from workplace diversity are stereotyping, discrimination, tokenism, ethnocentrism, and also gender- role stereotypes. Some positives include increased productivity, increased creativity and problem solving, helps to attract and retain talent, improves team building and enhances communication skills, helps to diversify customer base, according to a blog on …show more content…

Target maintains diversity in a much different than the other two companies we have discussed, because they are in a retail environment it makes it much more difficult. Target is improving its diversity management with a strong focus on talent development. They have a very strong mentoring program which has been a model for other diversity orientated businesses. Target was named Top Company for Mentoring by DiversityInc, last year. Target’s statement of diversity is "At Target, diversity is much more than a goal or campaign. It’s a core value we integrate into every area of our business—from our suppliers, to our teams, to the shopping experience in our stores. We foster an inclusive culture that allows our high-performing and diverse team to drive innovation" according to their corporate website. This statement of diversity shows how important this issue is to Target, they even extend it to their suppliers and to their customers, for a better shopping experience. This is significant to me because it shows they are always striving to be better and more innovative, that they aren’t just worried about corporate profits but that they want to actually make the lives of their employees and customers better. These are reasons I picked Target off of this last and continue to shop there and not stores like Wal-Mart. Target uses strategies mentioned by the book as being a Top-Down diversity program and also having very strict Equal Employment
