Training a Dog Have you ever trained a dog to do tricks? Do you have the patience and willfulness to train a dog? Training a dog can be frustrating at times; always take your time, and be patient with the dog; not all dogs progress the same. Although other methods exist, treat training remains my preferred method for training my dogs. Other methods usually include cruel unneeded abuse towards a dog; such as forceful training, which induces a negative association with some activities. With treat training, you exhibit no negative feedback, but only reward the good behavior. Treat training works great, and everyone should give it a try. Before you begin training a dog, you should figure out their favorite treat for a reward. Having a treat they enjoy promotes higher motivation and keeps their attention. The treats should also be little in size; similar to the kibble in which they eat. Avoid using large treats; many in a row could result in them getting sick, as well as empty your wallet. When training, always keep a pocket filled with treats; you want them available for any behavior that should be rewarded. Another reward to think about implementing involves celebrating. For this, you begin with your dog in the sit position. While they stare at the treat, say "lay down;" move the treat to about 3 inches from their face, and slowly move the treat towards the ground. As you move downwards, they should follow the treat down. If they stand up, call the sit command and try again. With enough work, the dog will eventually get the point. If the dog refuses to lay down, it may be best to try again at a later time. After a few successful commands from the sit position, attempt a lay down command while they stand.
